Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Speaking of the numbers debate, here is what I have so far. We have 13 seniors who will undoubtedly be leaving after next season giving us 13 spots.

Total spots = 13.

Butch mentioned in his signing day press conference he counted a couple of players forward to this class (presumably Dews and Robertson).

Total spots = 11

There are 9 RS JR that will be eligible to graduate and forgo their senior year of football or transfer without penalty. This list includes Maggitt, Coleman, M. Jackson, A. Carson, Saulsberry, Kerbyson, Crowder, Orta, and Randolph. I would only expect 2-3 of those to take that deal. For some of them, it would be in their best interest financially to enter the workforce rather than continuing college or to pursue a secondary degree. It doesn't necessarily mean a force out.

Total = 14

I think this is pretty definitive start to conversation. Inevitably, players will transfer or be asked to leave and some may show out and leave early for the draft, but those numbers are impossible to predict even for CBJ. I think the recent commitment and uncommitment of Shelley is a testament of that fact. It will shake out some how, but I am not nearly as sure that we will sign a full class as many on here think. I think we get closer to 20 + the 2 counted forward from 2014.

We will have more than that bc it doesn't work 100% how you did it. Good post though. I will break it down when I get back to my PC.

10,000th post.

This milestone shoutout goes to 5 I think are under rated: (along with the usuals - wU, Ron, Freak and others who contribute)

Thanks POA. Everybody lovin them VOLS and the way everyone is ready to help one another on here is what makes this place so great. I am proud to be a small part of VolNation. Next I would like to thank my agent for getting me this part. Of course the technicians are crucial to the success. Without all the boom mic operators, cameramen, key grips, etc etc we would not have been able to pull it off. :good!: :cray:

You're actually pretty close, imo. However, I think Robertson will end up being a 2014 counter.

Heading into 2015 we will see:

13 Seniors:
Pickett
Howard
Blanc
Johnson
Jackson
Crowder
Kerbyson
Saulsberry
Carson
Maggitt
Orta
Randolph
McNeil

20 Juniors:
Dobbs
Peterman
Hill
North
Croom
Smith
Bowles
Branisel
Weisman
Vereen
Lewis
O'Brien
JRM
Bynum
King
Sutton
Foreman
Johnson
Swafford* (if given scholarship)
Bullock

39 SO and rFR:
Ferguson
Jenkins
Sanders
Kendrick
Miller
Vickers
Brown
Carr
+31 signees from 2014 (I'm counting Robertson and not Dews)

That's a total of 72 scholarship players. I figure Swafford will get his scholly, but if not, that's 71.

Then there is the case of forgotten transfer P Tim Gleeson from Wyoming. Does he get a scholly?

Let's stick with 72. That leaves 13 available spots for the 2015 class.

Dews gets 1, so that's 12 left.

I will not speculate as to who could leave, get "cut," flunk out, transfer, etc., but there are no less than 8 really possible guys, plus a couple more who could be added if they don't contribute in 2014. 10 maximum, though. Let's say 8 leave, which is a TON.

That gives us a class of 20 + Dews. So, Volnukem nailed it.

If you can't get to 11 on that list pretty easily I don't think you are being honest with the talent level of some of the guys on that list - and that is just counting talent, not grades, discipline, etc

I think it is pretty easy to find 11-14 guys who are highly unlikely to ever be 1-2 on a UT depth chart

agree on robertson - he will count on this year's class

I found 7 or 8 VERY easily.....

Finding 7-8 kids who will not be seeing significant playing time is easy. Something to consider though is just because a kid is not seeing PT does not automatically mean he will choose to leave Tennessee. I have said it before and I truly believe it. Just being a part of Tennessee football and being able to graduate as a Vol may be enough for some kids. Getting to 20 will be tough IMO.

Quick note....

If they met obligations charges against Danny O'Brien and Sapp will be dismissed. AJ Johnson's court date is tomorrow. We have said and thought all along that this could be a possible resolution.

And for AJJ?

I would expect a likely similar result. Do what the judge asks in terms of community service or other requirements and the charges will be dismissed when he returns to court in a few months.

I got to 11 easy.

There are 7-8 guys that haven't played at all and won't play at all. There are 3-4 others who have played some and have some potential left but could also be gone.

It's not about what we see as potential - it has to be based on "have they played at all yet?" If the answer is no, they gone. There are around 8 of those.

I got 9. I hope we end up signing 20-22 because that means some of the guys on the current roster did something worthwhile during the upcoming season.

If they have not played, and are still at UT after multiple years, why are you so sure they will just now decide to walk away to make room for someone else? Maybe the kid likes being a Vol? Maybe he loves being a part of UT football even if that means being a practice player and graduating as a VFL. If the kid is not seeing PT at UT now, I doubt the NFL is in his future. Is it crazy to think some may choose to stick with UT football wise and graduate from the school they chose to attend?

I see 12 EE spots, that may be the most important #.
Otherwise, I am happy with the way this class is going :hi:

Yeah it's an original. You are more than welcome to quote it as well. If you want to add a source to it and my handle just seems out of place, you can say a guy by the name of Coy Gill was it's source.

Maybe one day, if I finally get my ass in gear, I'll be famous.

Coy Gill! I should have known. You dirty old bastard.

I got to 11 easy.

yep not hard at all

as LV said not all will want to leave - but most players do want to play - they don't do all the work just to practice so when FR start taking their reps most will want to go to a place where they can get on the field - dont think it will be an issue at all

now after 2015 I wouldnt be surprised to see a lower class - all will be CBJ guys and talent level will have been significantly elevated so a new addition wouldnt be as clear a talent upgrade as it is now

It's not easy to get to 11. Some of these guys are expected to contribute.
