Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Awesome game. Those dudes(both teams) are so uber talented. Unbelievable. Best athletes on earth. So entertaining. Go Grizz indeed!
Yessir. It's good they are considered a "west" team because I can't root for them more than my Hawks. Love them both though. Been to probably 25-30 Hawks games and 5 or so Grizz games throughout the years. It's been a good playoffs for both teams thus far

Vols tab Tyndall
Volquest.com Staff
Talk about it in The General's Quarters
The search to replace Cuonzo Martin ended Monday night as Tennessee is expected to formally introduce Southern Mississippi's Donnie Tyndall as their new basketball coach at a 2pm Tuesday press conference.

Tennessee received permission to formally speak with Tyndall sometime after lunch on Monday and at that point Tyndall and the Tennessee brass of Dave Hart, Jon Gilbert and Mike Ward discussed the job face to face in or near Hattiesburg. Monday night, athletic department employees were preparing for Tuesday's introduction in a number of different avenues including social media, their website and the production of the press conference.

The search focused on Tyndall on Monday evening after Tennessee made a weekend pitch to Louisiana Tech's Michael White that he rejected for good on Monday morning.

Tyndall has been at Southern Miss for the past two seasons where he's gone 56-17. His team went 29-7 this past season and won the Conference USA regular season title.

Prior to his arrival in Hattiesburg Tyndall compiled 114-84 record in six seasons at Morehead State. He twice lead that program into the NCAA Tournament and in 2011 knocked No. 4 seeded Louisville as a No. 13 seed.

Tyndall has exposure to the state of Tennessee from his time as an assistant at Middle Tennessee State where he served as the associate head coach for five seasons and he clearly wanted the Tennessee job and made that known when Tennessee first had what sources describe as a third party conversation with him last Wednesday or Thursday.

He also has experience in the SEC, having served as an assistant at LSU from 1997-2001.

As noted above, Tennessee sent its power trio of Hart, Gilbert and Ward out today with the intent to find a new head basketball coach. In speaking with people extremely close to the Southern Miss program independent of our other conversations, as well as those close to prospects, the Golden Eagles' basketball program began to feel the Tennessee opening could be a realistic opportunity today after several days' total silence from the Vols' camp. But Southern Miss acted quickly. We're told at least some of the Golden Eagles' signees or their families were informed that Tennessee could be their destination, and it was indicated that Tyndall & Co. would attempt to bring multiple signees with them to Knoxville, pending ultimate completion of a deal.

Tyndall runs an uptempo, aggressive style and isn't afraid to press, according coaches who have been to Tyndall's camps in the past or watched him up close in action. Tyndall targets "aggressive, fast and tough-minded" players. The staff proved solid recruiters, particularly with the work done by Jareem Dowling, who was at Morehead State for a single year before spending the past two seasons at Southern Miss.

Tyndall's contract at Southern Mississippi is a salary of $500,000 with a buyout of the same amount.

Interesting right here. Wonder how many of his guys he wants to bring and what that's going to hold for our current signees.

Wonder who the players are, and if they're any good, that he might bring with him? And wonder about our current commits. Cornish seems solid, wonder about Cofer.

Like I posted before I will support this guy like a good Vol fan should. He has potential. But to be exuberant in praise for Hart and the hire is very much over the top at this stage. We could be revisiting this in a few years while Hart is beginning to collect his Social Security. Hope not - ready for this crappy coaching BS to stop being the central topic of discussion.

Back to football and recruiting in particular.

Truth.

I like the hire, but I am pretty familiar with southern miss bball. I can understand he isn't the splash that some people wanted. But he can flat out coach.

Also the Rick Byrd love on this board is exactly like what happens with a recruit from knoxville... It's crazy how similar the situations are.

He has an overall .654 winning % as a HC (including .767 at Southern Miss the last 2 seasons), took his team to the NCAA's twice at Morehead St, won the Conf USA Reg season this year at Southern Miss, and grew up 38 miles from where Butch Jones grew up. He's not the sexy grand slam media darling, and I'd like to hear more about him, but so far so good, IMO.

Never had adding season after his first at Morehead St. Good start for sure.

Byrd is an incredible coach. He gets more out of nothing than any active coach out there. Look at the teams he knocks off year in and year out with kids who would never make a BCS conference roster.

I think Byrd is a good coach and his style is perfect for being a giant killer. His teams shoot a lot of threes and when they're falling like they did in the tourney and against UNC they can beat anyone. But he isn't Coach K like some in the bball forum would have you believe.

Here are his recruits for this year.
