Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Will be nice to have a guy get involved with the fan base like CBJ, hopefully recruits will flock like the salmon of Capistrano.

Just went over and skimmed through the BB forum and noticed that the real "experts" are saying that Tyndall is a bad hire and won't be able to win here. Apparently they looked at his record and since he had no undefeated seasons or NCAA titles he was unacceptable. I have no idea how Tyndall will do here but I can't claim that he is a bad coach or that he won't be able to win here (or even at Southern Miss). He has a year to build some relationships with high school players for the next recruiting class which will start to show his ability to recruit some of the higher ranked players. I imagine it's really too late now to get any for this class. I hope he works out so the coaching searches for FB and BB will be over with for 15-20 years.

I complained about not getting Howland right up until Tyndall announced. I will support our coach.

Go Vols. Let's give him a chance before we start signing meaningless petitions.

As much as I did not want a B lister, yet, knowing that is what they would do since they always go that way - CDT is a decent hire IMO. If they were going second tier I liked the Ohio trio of Cronin, Miller and Davis. But the more I researched and remembered, CDT has paid his dues.

I like guys that have worked hard and not had it given to them. They hate to lose and will outwork their opponents. Add in he wants to be here and it is a destination job. Looks like Hart fell in a pile of slop and came out smelling like a rose again it appears. Whatever works.

To say Tyndall is a bad hire is saying he has no proven track record of success, which is ignoring the facts. Dooley was a bad hire. Kiffin was a bad hire. Neither had proven success as a head coach. This is not the case here.

this hire seems a lot like the CBJ hire to me - it is hard to argue with their results at smaller programs but in both cases you aren't sure how they would be able to recruit with the big boys

CBJ certainly answered that for us this past year - CDT seems to have the intangibles and energy that typically lead to being a really good recruiter so hopefully he will be able to recruit well at this level and give us something exciting to watch during bball season

i am excited about the hire and think he could be a really good coach for us

and I think regardless we have an excellent AD - which is very important - he gets quality candidates on board, doesnt get bullied by coaches/media pressure to act in a certain time period, doesnt overpay, sets us up to not be in dire financial straits like we were post fulmer/Pearl with all those buyouts - I think our AD hire might have been our best one over the past 5 years

It was mentioned as an assistant at Idaho he pulled a top 15 class. I too questioned his recruiting but that made me feel a little bit better hearing that.

Not ready to give him the butch or Pearl label comparison. Butch and Pearl are a rare finds. I don't see Tyndall on their level but I do see him somewhere in between where Cuonzo and Pearl was with Cuonzo being the low and Pearl the high bar. That's not a bad place to be at all.

I don't think most fans understand the budget issues Hart has to manage (and still be expected to hire a good coach). This article provides the gruesome details...

Low Hart Rate - Tennessee Sports Radio - Tennessee Sports Radio

As you said SC, I think Hart is the best hire we've had in a long time. He inherited a bigger mess than many people knew.

I wasn't putting Butch on the level he's at when he was first hired either. I'll be interested to see what a proven coach can do with a wide recruiting budget and enough money to hire a high quality staff. One advantage of not breaking the bank for a HC is to have enough left over to pay good assistants. I expect success.

I like your optimism on Hart, but I think it's waayyy too early to call Hart a success. Butch has given us a reason to be optimistic, but it'll be a few years before I call Hart a success if Tyndall and Butch do more than barely squeeze us into the postseason.

The song "Let it Go" from the Disney movie Frozen. Anyone with young girls in the house can sing it from memory. There's been some good parodies out there too.

Sometimes when I'm thinking about my little girl, I start singing "do you want to build a snowman?"
