Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I haven't done the math on this, but a single table conference could look something like this:

Tier 1: (4 teams from east and west)
Bama
LSU
Auburn
Texas A&M
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina
Tennessee (up for debate)

Tier 2: (3 teams from east and west)
Mizzou
Ole Miss
Kentucky
Vandy
Arkansas
Miss. St.

Then as far as scheduling you have 1 permanent rival against a tier 1 team, 1 permanent rival against a tier 2 team then you play 3 games against other teams in tier 1 and 3 games against other teams in tier 2. This way we would keep annual rivalries with Bama and Vandy, and it won't be that long before we play all of the other teams.

You have not seen that. Not trying to bash Hill, but a Vol For Life would work harder, try harder and fight their way into the 2-3 deep at their position. There is a Maxim that addresses this. When the breaks are going against you, put on more steam (paraphrase from memory). How many times do the players chant these very Maxims? If they are just words, then you transfer or ride the bench. If they mean something to you, the you really are a VFL. (Ie M Palardy)

Jmo. /end rant :)

We don't know the details. Philosophically, I totally agree with you, but for all we know, he could have been told he wasn't getting a scholarship next year and couldn't afford to stick around. In his tweet he seemed (and explicitly said he was) sad to no longer be a vol. It sounded to me like he didn't have much choice.

regardless of whether we lose bama - 9 games help us - just means more teams play bama - so those years where georgia seems to play noone will just get rarer and rarer

bama being 1 of our 9 conference games is more fair then they being 1 of our 8

Very poetic Doc, but he is making a measured decision. as a rising junior, the incoming talent is better, and he continues to get passed on the chart.

He goes somewhere to play the game he loves, we get an additional roster spot, and nothing but love between the two parties.

Great decision, beneficial outcome

agree 100% - no reason to say the kid wasnt a VFL or wasnt trying - simple truth is DD just recruiting some guys that are nowhere near as talented as the guys CBJ is bringing in

he could have been the hardest worker on the team and Dscott and Hurd and Paul if healthy would have beat him out for reps

he's just not as naturally talented as some of those backs - kid can't help that

They are our biggest rival. Nothing fair or unfair about it.

We play em.

When was the last time that game was critical to both teams?

That's why people think Florida is our rival, the Bama game hasn't been significant to a season for both teams in decades, whereas Florida has had a dozen or so in my lifetime where whoever won probably goes to ATL.

Rivalries go in cycles, I don't really care who was our rival 50 years ago. Bama/UT hasn't been a regular matchup of top teams in a long, long time. I'd much rather keep Florida than Bama.

Either '06 or '07....maybe even '05.

wasn't really the point player

if you assume they are going to be the strongest team over the next 5 years the schools that don't play them get an advantage over the ones that do

we do every year so our schedule would then be less favorable than say MO, GA, etc

capish

UT won 7 straight from '95-'01. UT then won 3 of 4 from '03-'06. Bama has won 7 straight from '07-'13. It goes in cycles, always has.

It won't be long before Butch has UT winning 5-10 in a row. It's science.

I mean when was the last time both teams were at the top. 2000s we alternated, they were good and we sucked, and vice versa. I think it's been before their penalties that both teams were top 2 in their divisions. Not positive, but certainly not in the 21st century.

Rivalries to me have always been about both teams being on top and only one can win. Bama and UT haven't been on top in the same season for a long time. UT and Florida have been many times, so I see the Florida rivalry as a better one.

IMO the bama game is "critical" every year.

In my lifetime I cant remember Tennessee having a bad season in which we beat bama. From 95 to 02 is widely considered one our our best runs in Tennessee history.

Check out our record against bama during that span.

I'll just agree to disagree.

Point taken. It does make our schedule tougher than some others.

I agree. This is a no brainer except, apparently, for a lot of coaches in the SEC. Then watch them whine and moan about not getting in the NC playoff with one conference loss. Dumb. Each have enough cupcakes and mediocre teams on their schedules. Balances out the tougher games for everybody.

I was sold before, but I love how he looks the team right in the eyes when he talks to them, congratulates them and tells them how humbed and honored he is to be there coach. I think they will be sold quickly.
