Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

IMO the bama game is "critical" every year.

In my lifetime I cant remember Tennessee having a bad season in which we beat bama. From 95 to 02 is widely considered one our our best runs in Tennessee history.

Check out our record against bama during that span.

I'll just agree to disagree.

Things are setting up for Butch to knock off the teams that have been thorns in our side one by one.

Last year he got South Carolina and kept the new streak going against UK.

This year he's taking down Florida and Vandy.

Next year he's going to beat Georgia.

And by 2016, he'll have us on near equal footing with Bama, and he'll break the streak.

I mean when was the last time both teams were at the top. 2000s we alternated, they were good and we sucked, and vice versa. I think it's been before their penalties that both teams were top 2 in their divisions. Not positive, but certainly not in the 21st century.

I think that would've been '05, then. IIRC, we were both ranked in...the teens?

Here's the thing though, throughout each program's history, it was rare to have both programs at the top of their games. Whenever there was a streak, it usually coincided with one of the program being down.

Neyland came before Bryant's time. Bryant came and laid waste to every coach we had except Dickey. Battle was our Derek Dooley of the 70's. Majors beat them just a handful of times in the late 70's early 80's but could never get over that hump, after. Fulmer made it his own personal mission to destroy all that encompassed the Crimson Tide (I'll always love that man for that, alone) but then Saban showed up and Fulmer checked out.

...and then there's the last almost-decade of suck. They've never been more dominant, both in the series and nationally, and we're scratching, clawing, and crawling our way out of our own self-destruction.

Ron's right, we're [over] due for a series turn...soon.

Eventually, hopefully sooner than later, Bama will fall. And glorious day, when we topple they azz, it will be sweet... oh so sweet... like sucking on a Popsicle made of honey.

regardless of whether we lose bama - 9 games help us - just means more teams play bama - so those years where georgia seems to play noone will just get rarer and rarer

bama being 1 of our 9 conference games is more fair then they being 1 of our 8

Absolutely agree. However, there is zero support for a 9 game SEC schedule outside of Bama - Tennessee. I think within 3 years, we won't be playing Bama anymore. Sucks big time.

I want to be there on that day. I was there in '04 vs. Florida and it was glorious.

These eyes have never witnessed a win versus Alabama, in person.

I will be there, oh yes...I will be there.

Allow me to tell you the reason Bama is our biggest rival to me.

1985 my dad bought 2 tickets from his Bama alum boss to watch Tony Robinson and the Vols play in Birmingham. Little did my dad know that these seats were smack dab in the middle of long time Bama season ticket holder section. We were getting snide remarks from just about everyone we came in contact with, including the hot dog vendors.

I will never forget one remark though. I was 12 years old at the time. Some toothless moron walks up to me at halftime and says "I'd rather have a sister in a whore house than a brother play football at UT". My dad who was very conservative and quiet promptly stands, grabs said redneck by his sleeveless sweat shirt and says "MFer, you're more likely to have the first one".

Prior to this event, my dad had reprimanded me several times for hitting this little old lady in the back of the head with my orange and white shaker whenever the Vols did something good. He took my shaker away from me at one point. After the neck scurried away, my dad handed the shaker back and said "wear it out".

Greatest Vol memory ever for me.

My guess is there will be another 3-4 by September and 3-4 more before Christmas. And 25 will be the number on NSD.

agreed - I think he will give some guys a chance to prove they can hange once the rest of the newbies get on campus - some will and some won't

I think we likely will be at 25

however, if some guys that we may think have a low chance start to really come on it could be closer to 22

either way another infusion is coming - future is bright

That's awesome.

Here's hoping that volatil jr kicks a winning FG over Bama in a few years and replaces that memory as your greatest.

I have seen very few TN games live... maybe 6.

I did see Jay Graham take off on Bama though. Twas beauty.

John Ward remarks to Bill Anderson "why don't we run it every time".

Pre game was filled with "what's wrong with our run game", "we should just pass every down".

BTW I was there too.

Point taken. It does make our schedule tougher than some others.

exactly - I don't want them off the schedule either

in fact in my perfect world we'd cut some teams out and just have the big boys play each other - everyone plays everyone once and be done with it

but that ain't happening :)

I'll admit, I wasn't raised as a UT fan. I didn't even really care about college football for years. As a result, I have never seen UT beat UF or Alabama since I started following in about 2008. Now as an Alum, I hope to one day see UT win in person.

I'm pretty sure I was there for Jamal Lewis's coming out game. I saw a couple against KY in the Couch years, the Wyoming victory, KY during Meachem's final season and USC during Bray's sophomore year.

Just thought that info would be important to ya'll's lives.

I looked over the last two decades and I couldn't find one year where we both finished the year ranked. 2005 was our 5 win season.

Yeah it's not a good idea, IMO. Let the coaches handle that.

I've got a list of 12-13 players that are potential transfers. Pearson, Maggitt, and Randolph have the potential to entertain going early as well and there is no way the entire 2014 class gets in and remains intact after year 1.

I think we will definitely have the roster space to bring on 24-25 players.

Witten owning arky in the 6th overtime was probably my favorite live game. Unfortunately we weren't very good in 2003-2007 when games were free, so I didn't see many good ones then.

This.

I find the teeth-gnashing over numbers on this forum to be hilarious. History and common sense tells us we will have numerous casualties to the current roster. We will take close to 25 guys the next cycle. Bank on it.
