Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Butch sounds open to dumping the Bama game in that interview.

He definitely is, I noticed it too. The "I'm still gathering facts and information" is classic, textbook Jones-speak for "I'm pleading the 5th because a lot of people probably wouldn't like my answer". It's not a complex question - you're either yes or no on the Bama game and there's no way any Tennessee coach isn't already intimately familiar with the facts. In no way shape or form does he want to get clobbered by Nicky and the Gumps every year while in the midst of a hardcore roster rebuild. I personally enjoy the tradition of the TSIO, but it's easy to see why from his view.

It's spring. Nobody is thinking straight, lol. The truth is, this is what we are looking at.

Huge question marks on an unproven OL

Tight Ends who have not been able to stay healthy, or are 18 years old.

A new defensive line that could not get the start over an average defensive line last year.

Still no starting QB named.

A RB who has had some health issues and more true freshmen.

A scary open spot on one corner, and a SS who is a little less "swift of foot" than we would prefer

New kicking game

Sure, I'm optimistic about the season, but these are VERY real concerns.

I'm only worried about the OL personally.

Saulsberry, O.Williams, Vereen and Maggitt is better than anything we've had on the DL recently. Plus a few young guys coming in.. Will be better IMO

QB have so many weapons, I'm confident whoever wins will distribute.. Butch likes competition, so he will keep it open

Fr running backs can step in for a Lane injury.. Not worried at all there..

We have some talented DBs coming in..

Darr seems to be improved, but FGs will be scary..

All JMO, but not as bad as you think

I was just scrolling through the Rivals 15 team rankings. I know I've said it a thousand times but we got lucky as can be when Strong (and whoever else) turned us down and the job fell to Butch, imo. I don't think any of the guys that turned us down would have us where we are rt now in so many different areas.

With that said, I couldn't help but notice Texas' recruiting so far for 15. I know we have a long way to go until nsd15 but it's clear Texas doesn't own that state any longer. I'm not just talking about in-state recruits, either, but overall. Whether that's bc of A&M's move to the sec, Strong replacing M Brown or whatever.

As of now, A&M has 9 commits (8 4* & 1 3*) and Texas has 9 commits as well (1 4* & 8 3*). Complete opposite.

Heck, Baylor (8 total- 3 4* & 4 3*) has more 4*'s than Texas with one less commit. And although TCU (9 total- 0 4* & 8 3*) doesn't have a 4* they have just as many 3*'s as mighty Texas. Even Texas Tech has 2 4*'s with 6 total commits.

Who knows, maybe he gets it going soon, but I'm so glad we got Butch instead of him. Strong may have us in decent shape at this point, but I doubt he could've united this fan base, the university and really the whole damn state like Butch has.

Damn, Phil Cofer asking for his release too.

Just gotta wait for the dust to settle in basketball before reacting to all this. I get a sense basketball players are more committed to coaches than schools, which may be different than other sports. Donnie's first class may be bad in the end, but he wasn't dealt a full deck of cards either. Martin's first class also was awful, though he did find a diamond in the rough in Richardson.

Comes across as really appreciative of the opportunity to say the least, but at the same time you get the sense that he also thinks he's very much up to the task at hand and deserves the opportunity he's been presented with here.

In light of Lewis's comments, I'm serving up a fat OCI-style bump:

I got a different vibe from the presser - not cocky per se, but he's very, very confident in himself and in his system. He knows he can win in a pretty crappy league and he fully expects to do so. I actually got a very Chip Kelly-esque sense from Tyndall, minus the blatant apathy towards the media. Now if only he can follow up with the Kelly-esque W-L results...we'll be in business.

Some of his quotes sound very Dooley.

Charlie Strong warns Texas fans they won’t win a national championship this year | For The Win

Disagree pretty strongly there.

If you follow sabermetrics, you'll see he's doing things you simply don't see at his age.

Back to back 10 WAR seasons is absolutely incredible.

No kidding. Anybody who doesn't agree with the claim that "Mike Trout is having one of the best starts to his career of any player in the history of baseball" or the claim "barring disaster, Trout will be in the upper echelon of baseball HOF elites" just does not understand baseball.

What I'm thinking. 3rd and long will be a lot more fun to watch on defense with Vereen, Maggitt, Weatherd, and Hendrix coming off the edges(little bit if talent and depth there :)).

Mike trout, god of war.

I understand that coaches want to temper expectations, but it is never a good idea to place limitations on your team.

Dooley kept harping on how we weren't a good football team for two years, but by the time he thought the team was ready to compete in 2012, none of the players had any confidence in themselves.

I like Butch's approach of making sure the team knows that they're doing good, but they can still get better. The USC win is probably paying dividends when he speaks to the team. They have proof that they can beat the big dogs.
