Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

No way USU can stop our offense consistently all game. I don't really see them stopping our offense much at all. Our D will make enough plays to keep them in check. Maggitt will be all over their qb's azz the entire game too.

We win by 10+ easily, imo. Actually, with this game being moved to Sunday night and not many other games on tv at the same time (if any?), I could see Butch wanting to pour it on them a little. Neyland will be rocking with a night kickoff and the much anticipated legacy class' first game. Perfect opportunity for Butch to showcase what he's building to everyone around the nation and especially recruits watching.

We win by 20+ easily!! :)

For some reason this post gives me goosebumps. +1 n2n

I agree with you Neyland. I could be wrong, but I've wondered if it was intentional that they waited till the end of spring to move the USU game to Sunday night. Meaning, they wanted to see what they had before they did something so bold. If they were willing to make that move based on the spring version of team 118, I think they believe the fall version of team 118 can really lay the wood on them.

I'm hoping USU is ranked in a preseason poll. Would be fun to win and be ranked ourselves by the Oklahoma game.

There's a small part of me that agrees with your optimism. I try to temper mine with an acknowledgement that we will be young, inexperienced. But every team in the East is flawed, so anything can happen. Why can't we be this year's Mizzou?

If we win either the Oklahoma or UGA game, I think the season changes dramatically. That would be a huge, unexpected attention grabbing win that would boost the team's confidence in a big way. Could set us rolling...

If this team rolled Choklahoma I wouldn't be surprised.

Few Things From Coach Tyndall This Morning

Had a chance to visit with coach Tyndall this morning for a good bit as well as spend some time with the partial staff he's assembled in Knoxville.

Just general first impressions, really outgoing, energetic guy. Could not be more excited about the opportunity here and the support that' s place. I will be stunned if he's not a big hit with fans. He 'gets it' and will go out of his way to make a connection.

Comes across as really appreciative of the opportunity to say the least, but at the same time you get the sense that he also thinks he's very much up to the task at hand and deserves the opportunity he's been presented with here.

On Cofer he said he hopes to get in front of him and his family in a face-to-face manner soon and seemed hopeful of keeping him in the fold. Sounds like Turman is going to give him a chance to try and talk him out of asking out of his LOI but that one seems less promising.

Let me clear in saying that I really liked Zo and on a personal/professional level, he was great to deal with. From a fans' perspective though, Tyndall is going to be a completely different kind of cat. This is the kind of guy many of you have been hungry for.

If he can win some games here--and I suspect that he will--he's going to be a very popular individual.

I'm going to put up a Q&A from our talk in a bit, but that's just general observations on the new head coach.

You guys have loads of faith in our brand new OL and our brand new DL.

Our OL might be new playing together but they're not a bunch of freshman, most are talented upper classmen with experience. They just need to gel and play as a unit, I have faith that Mahoney and Butch will have them ready.

Our DL wasn't very good and that's being nice. The new DL won't have as much experience but it will be much more talented.

And don't forget there will be much more talent and experience at just about every other position around the OL and DL. It's going to be easier to mask OL mistakes with guys like Hurd, Helm, Wolf, Malone and Pearson added to the offense. And the same with the defense when you add Maggitt, JRM, and all the talented freshman competing for spots in the secondary and on the DL.

Bottom line, team 118 will be better than team 117.

I don't think you need to modify it like that, Ron. Regarding out starting 22, every position other than OL and DL is noticeably better. The only place I see us not improving is punter/kicker.

Spring optimism, mixed with a smidge of sarcasm, I'd say.

Our OL doesn't give me the warm fuzzies...especially when our prize JUCO OT sounds like he's going to need a full season of conditioning before he's SEC-ready.

It's spring. Nobody is thinking straight, lol. The truth is, this is what we are looking at.

Huge question marks on an unproven OL

Tight Ends who have not been able to stay healthy, or are 18 years old.

A new defensive line that could not get the start over an average defensive line last year.

Still no starting QB named.

A RB who has had some health issues and more true freshmen.

A scary open spot on one corner, and a SS who is a little less "swift of foot" than we would prefer

New kicking game

Sure, I'm optimistic about the season, but these are VERY real concerns.

If guys like Hendrix, Sawyers, Barnett, Bates, Weathered, Bryant, Gaulden, Kelly and the Berry twins can come in and be ready to contribute to the level it looks like Helm, Hurd, Wolf, Malone, Thomas and Pearson are going to on O, it will go a LONG WAY to us being able to overachieve.

Great young player, seems to be a great kid. But the key words in your accurate post are "for his age". He's done some great things getting on base, stealing bases, hitting for a good average, showing some pop in his bat. Still waiting to see the "eye popping" power numbers, 100+RBI seasons, etc. If he stays healthy, this year could be when we see some of that, but the jury's still a little bit out on him IMO in terms of projecting as an all-time great with the other guys you listed.

Disagree pretty strongly there.

If you follow sabermetrics, you'll see he's doing things you simply don't see at his age.

Back to back 10 WAR seasons is absolutely incredible.

I can't wait for the rest of the 2014 class to arrive. They start rolling in early May, with everyone on campus by July, right?

The OL has experience, they just need to build chemistry with each other.

The DL is a big question. Get back Saulsberry healthy, add Maggitt, and hope that either Weatherd or Jakob make an early impact; I think we'll be alright.

I will continue to say that getting Maggitt back is the best thing that could happen to this defense.

Freshmen contributors in the trenches are rare. I think Coleman Thomas is our allotment, so we'd be insanely lucky if a non EE freshman makes an impact on the DL.

I agree with Ron that our team is better, but our schedule really isn't much easier. I feel uneasy aboit predicting a bowl game, but maybe I'm just scared from years and years of being bad.
