Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Has nothing to do with him being old. He's been an idiot for a LONG time.

True. He's also been a cranky old man for a long time too. He probably was playing in the sandbox in kindergarten yelling stuff like, "you kids need to keep off my lawn and turn down your rock and roll music."

@Volquest_Paul: UT has announced its spring practice dates. March 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 27, 29, 30, April 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10

Orange & White Game April 12 @ 3 pm

on mike and mike they called them out this morning saying they don't believe for a second that BB and saban's motivation is to help injuries

Thank God somebody's calling them out on it, because it's complete bull****.

I thought CBJ's response was as diplomatic (and true) as you can be, and he's right! Produce the data that empirically shows a history of injuries due to fast-paced offenses and then we'll have a discussion on how to fix it.

Instead, we have a group of coaches whose offense's are some of the slowest-paced in the country, manufacturing narratives that will prevent the game from passing them (and their struggling defenses) by.

It's like the coaches who complained about the forward pass because they weren't clever enough to think of it first nor progressive enough to utilize and/or defend it...

Someone asked if AJJ or Maggitt will miss any time this fall due to the arrests/citations at the party...

That idiot John Adams in his Wednesday column in the News Sentinel gave his opinion about the players and said Butch should suspend Johnson and O'Brien for the first game next season. He was speaking from his 55 years experience as the head coach of a major college football team (HaHa). Who is he to think he is qualified to even give an opinion about what needs to be done. He's a sportswriter that wants readers and wants to create controversy any way he can. He needs to get on the first bus back to Louisiana and not come back.

Adams has always been an idiot and a moron. He usually take a position against Tennessee just to get friction from readers and listeners. I think he is an LSU man but he usually always supports Bammer and Satan. If Butch and most other SEC coaches supported the rule proposal but Satan was against it then Adams would be against it.
Very simple, Adams does not and has never liked Tennessee football or basketball.

:good!:

I suppose I should have specified that last bit a little better. I mean someone taking them to task to their faces. I've heard plenty decrying the change in the media.

Of course, you can't take Saban to task on anything to his face. He'll just walk off, but at least now he'll thank you for your interest in the game first.

I'd actually pay money to hear a reporter challenge Saban...on anything. The guy's in Tuscaloosa who cover Bama are really indentured servants to the omnipotent Saban and, unfortunately, their livelihoods are tied to being "privileged" enough to ask him questions...and subsequently, be lectured about their stupidity.

However, I'd love for a guy like Pete Thamel, Dan Patrick, Bruce Feldman, etc. to really press him on his take on this proposed rule change. I'd love to hear his reaction when they pressed him on whether his opinion was rooted in facts, data, and evidence or simply in his frustrations with offenses that are designed to wear defenses down by running an inordinately high number of plays...

Yeah, their motivation is pretty simple.

Saban uses 350 pound DTs that are a big advantage in stopping the run. There aren't a lot of good ones out there so Saban being good at recruiting them gives him an advantage.

The best way for schools to level the playing field against kids that big is to run a fast-paced offense that keeps them on the field. They're useless after the first few plays.

Saban doesn't like losing that advantage so he whines and tries to change the rules.

Thanks for the back up. :good!:

Now that I am an old codger I hate the stereotype of old means "against change". There are every bit as many young people against change as older people. In business I led the charge to stay current while the younger ones did not want to change what they were doing. I love the gray jerseys and wear top end Nike Flyknit running shoes. I avoid mall walking like the plaque - need to be outside. Look in my golf bag and you will find no clubs older that 2011 models. Old or young - it is all in the mind of the person. As the body ages you learn to adapt - which involves change.

But if they mean being old means you refuse to violate principles - guilty. Most older people have learned that is when you screw up.

I agree completely. Not sure why everyone is so worried about the OL. Let's take a look at each guy...

Blair - Junior - Stud JUCO, who started all 17 games in his JC career, with offers from about 10 of the top programs in CFB, #2 JUCO OL in the country, EE who will already be on campus 8 months before the season starts.

Jackson - RS Junior - Started 5 games as a freshman at LG, played in all 12, also was backup to D. Thomas at LG as a Soph and played in all 12, redshirted in '13 and will have 2 seasons to play. When he was battling Bullard at LG I thought he was better or at least as good as Bullard.

Crowder - RS Junior - redshirted as a freshman, played in 10 games the next two years including a start vs. USC in '13. He might not be the biggest center in the SEC but he's been in the program a long time now and has seen a good amount of action on the field and is very capable.

Wiesman - Soph - received rave reviews since the day he arrived on campus. Considered a very tough, physical OL who came from a very good HS program. Played in 10 games as a true freshman.

Kerbyson - RS Junior, played in 19 games in his career. He's been a backup for a couple years and seen plenty of the field.

Other OL who might make the rotation...C. Thomas, Sanders, Kendrick, Gilliam, Pair.

At least we're not throwing a handful of true freshman out there or walk-ons. Most of these guys are very talented, highly recruited OL, who've been in the program for 2+ years. Unless we have multiple season ending injuries I'm not worried about the OL at all.

'14 and '15 will all depend on the play at QB. Not OL, DL or any other position. The Vols will go as far as one of the 4 QB's on campus can take them. JMO

:good!: Really good analysis and I agree with every point.

Good post. Even his DE's are around 300 lbs. When they tire no double teaming is required, which gets the unoccupied O-linemen and TEs to the next level and on the LBs quicker.

Reading the stuff about Bruce Pearl in the basketball forum makes me realize one thing: We need to be thankful that we have Butch Jones and appreciate however long he coaches here.

I know that he hasn't "proven" himself to be a great coach at UT yet, but given his attention to detail and work ethic, it would be the shock of the century if he can't get it done on the field in the next year or two.

Dude is a superstar in the making, and we're lucky to have landed him when we did.

They actually did try when the whole DJ Fluker scandal that Mo got nabbed in broke. Saban was asked questions in his press conference, got mad, shot fire out of his eyes, said "Appreciate your interest in the game" and stormed out of the room. It was amusing to watch.

But you're right that they don't hold him accountable for squat and when they do challenge him pulls that kinda thing and they just get cowed into submission.

I think the funniest part is Nick Saban trying to convince people he cares about injured players.

It sounds like the "captain of the ship" is showing some fear:

I think you're right. So many people credit Brian Kelly for Butch's success, but I think Butch will ultimately end up with more success than Kelly. I know Kelly has played in a national title game, so Butch has a lot of work cut out for him. But I do think Butch will proved himself more than worthy.

Was just having a similar discussion with my son regarding the 'wisdom of age' vs the 'vision of youth'. The young have vision precisely because they have not yet proven to themselves what can't or shouldn't be done. The older I get, the less willing I become to test the boundaries, because i have done so enough times to convince myself they exist for a reason. The key to growing old gracefully is in knowing where preference ends and principle begins.

Is that why I keep trying to get home in 2 on 8? You'd think I'd be old enough to have learned my lesson by now. Right fairway, lay up to 125, hit it on and 2 putt. Haha.

That was really, really eloquent.

Oh gosh...me and 8 don't like each other. It is truly a sucker's bet for reasons I still don't understand.

Notre Dame's participation in that title game was a massive joke, but you're right, Kelly is a top notch coach. The interesting part to me of Jones following Kelly at two stops is that the two are very different in philosophy.
