Gilliam probably won't ever play football again if he doesn't play now, so it would be kind of mean to make him sit the last 5 or so games of his football career if he's anywhere close to being able to play.

Yeah Gilliam is a different situation than an RG3. Gilliam knows this is it for him in football and its not like the staff is immediately throwing him out there. They are covering their bases to make sure he can do it in a game. I think it will just be a senior night thing

Mean is 30 years in the future, calling up Old Man Gilliam on a cloudy day and asking him if his knee area is inflamed...a harbinger of thunderstorms. :ermm: All for 5 games.

If it's already completely torn, he's not going to tear it worse than that. If, and it's a big if, he can still play with enough stability in the rest of the knee then he shouldn't be any worse off in the future than he already will be. It's obviously not very common but Logan Mankins played almost an entire season with a torn ACL a couple of years ago.

Yes...and I know hockey players finish up Stanley Cup runs on knees just hanging on...not one to tell a kid what and what not to risk for a dream ...I just don't think Butch will let him risk it...could be wrong.

Naw. Partial tear, brace good to go. If he is not in pain...

If it does not fully tear, then no surgery, no harm no foul.
If it does tear, he gets a repair from UT docs. They are good with ACLs.

Bad arthritis with full tear and no repair guaranteed.

In this case, if he is 90+%, let him play. This is his only chance to play likely for the rest of his life...30 years from now, when he is telling his kids about the bama game where he did not allow a sack and his 5 pancake blocks sprung the NFL HOF RB Jalen Hurd to an unheard of 5 rushing TDs against bama, some weather related knee stiffness is not even a blip in his life radar :salute:

This is true but if cleared it should be his choice. I would do it. I would do it for one play so that I could say I was a VFL. Any time on the field would be so very precious to me. I am dealing with several health problems that started in my late 30's and just progressively got worse. There are never any guarantees in life. My health problems made me seek a different career, then ultimately I got to where I am not able to work. He could play 5 games and then have the operation and potentially never have a major problem with the knee too. It is most definitely something I would try though and I admire him for his guts and desire. As many of you I am sure, I listened to the Vols growing up and I knew at a young age that I would never be good enough to be a Vol gridiron player. I still had hopes though for basketball and I still remember when I realized all my practice and desire was not going to overcome the fact I had little talent. I bleed orange through and through. I would give up a lot to run through the T and play in one game at Neyland. Sorry for the rant.

When I tore mine, I couldn't even lift my leg up. Can't imagine playing on it. How do you run?

Ridiculous quad strength and a little bit of luck. If I remember the details of the Mankins situation, he didn't experience much bleeding like most people do when they tear a ligament and so there was little swelling and it didn't interfere with his range of motion.

Not just quad
Hamstring is a secondary stabilizer for the anterior shear that a torn ACL can cause

I'm not a Dr. but I'd imagine it can't get much worse than it already is or they wouldn't be discussing it.

Yeah, I'm sure it requires leg strength from just about every muscle in the leg, I just remember the doctor commenting specifically on the quad in an article I read on it.

What's the deal with this? Has this article been discussed?

Well, since we are talking about playing through injuries, I'm gonna "cool story bro" you all.

Senior year, final game, went low for a catch on a wet field and dislocated my thumb. I had the trainer set it, like a boss, missing only one offensive series. My hand swelled like a cantaloupe, but I didn't care. Last game... strap it on or go home, IMO. Went back in, caught a 3rd or 4th down comeback to sustain the drive, then caught a touchdown, getting sandwiched between 3 defenders. That was my final play.

I know that a dislocated finger is no torn ACL, but regrets?... none.

Although you can't make the ACL year worse, I find it hard to believe an unstable knee doesn't put the rest of your ligaments, tendons, and cartilage at risk.

Gotta tell the story when I can. I've yet to convince my wife of my exceeding awesomeness, and no one here in Thailand knows anything about football. :eek:lol:

Tell the same story, but instead of football, tell the Thai people all this took place in the finals of a badminton tournament...then they will relate.

No apology needed...most of us on here are in the same boat...if Gilliam can actually help and they brace it up I guess we'll see how it shakes out...one football issue with this...doesn't a LT need a lot of mobility to function effectively? Someone used the example of Mankins, but he plays guard...position switch if he's a go?

Who was the Dlineman that had a season ending injury his Sr year the game before uf (think it was a shoulder injury?) and decided to play vs uf before having season ending surgery?

I wanna say it was Justin Harrell but can't remember for sure. I do remember it being a pretty big deal among UT fans that he pushed through the pain for one last game bc he wanted to beat uf so bad.

VFL right there whoever it was

Yes, torn bicep. Legendary move. Almost won that game too. I wanted it so badly for him.

Now we know why you're in Thailand. That's where Jor-El sent you to hide out.
