Follow up.
FWIW
I saw the early list of candidates that Currie wants to look at. Its a solid list of coaches. The approach will be to rank them and start reaching out to their agents to find out whos willing to listen, what its going to take for them to leave/accept, and see if they can put together a package that is a win-win. I will tell you that Grudens name is on the list, but the advice theyre getting is to not pursue him. The reasons why
coaches who have spent a majority of their time in the NFL rarely succeed in college. The rare exceptions are Pete Carroll and Barry Switzer. You can say Harbough, but he started off as a college coach at Stanford. For every 2 or 3 that have done well, there are 18 others like Chan Gailey that have failed. You must play the odds with this hire. The second piece Gruden hasnt coached in a long time. Why do you think thats the case? The feedback I was given is he has a reputation of being a very difficult coach to work for. This comes from his former players and assistant coaches. Plus, he really hasnt had to work hard in several years, so nobody knows how hell do on the recruiting trail, meet & greet/roadshows, etc. For someone to post that its 98% likely that the Gruden deal is done is simply not true.
There are a handful of other coaches on the list that would be a much better match if theyre willing to listen. Most of them are head coaches, but there are a few OCs on there as well. What I can tell you is Fuente, Venables, Kiffin, Stoops, Peterson, Patterson, Norvell, Miles, and Jimbo are not being considered at this time. That can obviously change. If we can land one of the A list coaches, I think most of the Vol nation will be happy. The X factor are the other coaching vacancies that could open up this year, including UCLA, Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and possibly USC. That doesnt include the obvious ones at Ole Miss, Oregon State, and possibly Washington State if Leach follows his ex. AD to Nebraska, but the fan base there are foaming at the mouth to get Scott Frost.
Prior to this search, Tennessee had a contract with a search firm out of Atlanta called Parker Executive Search, but they found a loop hole in the contract and have severed ties. They have one guy who is extremely well thought in the coaching search space that Currie has engaged as a trusted adviser. The real insiders can verify this.
