It made sense the first time Gruden was in town with MNF in Nashville and planned for a while. One thing that was different was sitting in stands instead of sidelines... was interesting detail to me. He has been on sidelines plenty of time under Butch before.

This trip is intriguing because MNF is in GB. I guess you can say he is coming halfway From TB to here then on to GB but still odd

He also wore all black. No power T’s or anything. Just black. That is intriguing as well. I think it’s obvious they’re at least talking to him. I hope anyway.

I believe the rumor was he was coming back to close on his house he just bought. I will say though that he can do all of that digitally so he wouldn’t have to actually come to knoxville though.

He just bought a house. The man is moving in

I'm not sold either. I know I'm vastly outnumbered here, but I actually think hiring Gruden could backfire spectacularly. Gruden strikes me as a guy who is very full of himself with a huge ego and questionable interpersonal skills. Putting someone like that into the pressure cooker that is UT football seems to me like a recipe for disaster. I would be much much happier with Frost, Campbell, or Mullen.

Also, fwiw, I've never believed there was a realistic shot at landing Gruden, and I still don't believe it now.

I agree Gruden is a risk and not a sure fire thing like Saban. However, here are the reasons he is far and away my number one choice this go around, and well worth the risk:

1) We are a pedestrian football program and have been for over a decade. We are completely and utterly irrelevant on a national scale. Gruden is the ONLY candidate that gives us IMMEDIATE notoriety.

2) I have almost no doubt Gruden would recruit at the highest levels. Within two full recruiting cycles, I'm convinced we will have a top 5 roster. Even if Gruden were to "fail" he would leave us stockpiled with talent.

3) Getting Gruden means our administration is listening to the fanbase and the fanbase's desire for relevance. It shows they think about our football program as we do: one with all the tools to be a national power again.

From the Gruden thread. A few pieces of info from various places:

In East Tennessee. Has absurd offer. Hasn't said no this whole time. Been negotiating. No one is opposed. Any statements that academics or other boosters are in the way are false. Sorry to be vague, but back when everything went quiet in October, I was told to be quiet as well. I'll share this now because it seems we're to the point it no longer matters. UT has pushed all the chips in. If it doesn't happen now it's because he folds and walks away.

Gruden is the most sure fire hire you could possibly make. This kind of mentality is what keeps us from competing for Championships.

For those that pray and count themselves my friends on VN..Please pray for my family, my stepfather, one of the greatest men I've ever known, and my hero..passed away from pancreatic cancer a few minutes ago. I will not be around for awhile....Thanks.

Ah, man, I am so sorry. Prayers for all of you. Truly, truly sorry.

Ummmm No Sir Ree. He is the loudest hire and would make the biggest splash with the media and fans.

But the facts are, The guy has never coached college, never had to put up with 19-21 year old pompous spoiled brats. He's never had to recruit and spend 18 hour days, everyday. It's a whole different animal in college. He's never had to deal with NCAA restrictions and infraction committees.

People get caught up in the fact that he won a SB, and you see him on ESPN. But that doesn't translate into being a good coach in college. Period.

There are several coaches that should be higher up in the "List". Patterson, Franklin, Fuentes, Richt, Peterson, Mullen, all know the hardships that come with being a College head coach, and also the parameters that come with the NCAA guidlines and rules also. Gruden has already stated, in years past, that he doesn't like the hourly rule set forth by the NCAA, on coaching time limit.

And sure, he could knock it out of the park, but to say he's the "Best" hire, is just not true. Fans are placing a lot on him just because he coached 10 years ago in the NFL. The odds are stacked against him and that's a lot of pressure and expectation for anyone. I'd rather see a proven College big wig come in and take us to the promise land.

I know we could all see Butch fired with a loss but could anyone see him gone with a super close win. Maybe come from behind or overtime or something?

I am holding out hope that this is his last game, regardless. Maybe Currie said that I'll give you to Southern Miss to go out a winner and after that, you are done, regardless. Most likely not, but one can hope.

So glad to see a kid as talented as this and for the first time in 5 years have hope that he will be coming to a program with a coach who will utilize his skill set and develop him into a legit offensive threat.

Here are my thoughts on Gruden. If he comes, I will be ecstatic. If he does not come, I will be only moderately disappointed, because I have not let myself believe, but it has been much harder not to believe this time. I will be very, very disappointed if the backup plan to this push for Gruden does not include the other people on the list that we all want: Mullen, Frost, Patterson, Stoops, Kelly and possibly Campbell.

Don't care about any list. Just stating facts and some people want to get all caught up in the hoopla instead of seeing through the fog. Gruden could come in and kill it, but for us more "level headed VFLs", think maybe a more proven college coach is what TN needs. Just my opinion, nothing more. Sorry to upset some folks. We still Family

Prayers lifted for peace, grace and healing. Our Lord will provide.

Me as well, cause it shows the nation that TN is not afraid anymore of going out and spending the big bucks and taking a big shot at a big name. I'm like you as well, just hope the "Plan B", isn't a google head coach

Damn Ergen's dad was a nuclear phycisist who ended up at Oak Ridge. Charlie made his money and was even a pro poker and black jack player at one time. He's climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and Everest. Like this guy, hope he takes over.

Not exactly the guy you want to be playing high stakes poker with. I'm talking to you Jim Haslam.

Haynesworth was on Fox Sports Knoxville this week and he said he supports Haslam completely. He said that Haslam wants to win, he wants Gruden, and he said we would have had Gruden last time but the president got in the way, not Haslam.
