I’m still fully on the Gruden train but I’m starting to hate the possibility of a Mullen hire a little less. He’s done fairly good job of recruiting (avg #25 ranked class) especially to a place like State. They’ve put a lot more players in the league than we have recently and he’s only 45. I wouldn’t love him bringing Grantham here but I guess I could live with it.

We could do a lot worse

Didn't bald Kevin do it to Tennessee a couple of years before he ended up at Vandy?

I think the story is that Dickey was at Stallings' house and took a call. Stallings overheard Dickey talking about another candidate and Stallings declined.

He MAY take a big step forward and win the division regularly, or he may be “7.5 win Dan”. Or he may take a small step forward and be 8.5 win Dan.

Such is the question

I understand your pessimism regarding Mullen.

However, I would ask two things:

Do you believe Tennessee could offer more money to hire better assistants around Mullen?

Do you think Tennessee allows him to recruit a higher quality athlete?

I see our offense looking a lot like 05-08 Florida if we got Mullen. He'd be able to recruit those same type of athletes here. He'd also be given the money to bring a top defensive staff in. I'd say we'll be winning 9 or 10 regular season games on the regular and be in contention for the east pretty much every year.

If Gruden is out, and Frost goes to Florida, I’m going to need some time off, cause you guys know where I stand on that, and options below those two aren’t my cup of tea

We know, we know. Frost very well could be the next big thing and is probably a great option....,but "potential" is a son of a gun. You want Frost and I want Stoops. I think this Florida vacancy deletes my already thin % more than yours. Stoops would choose Florida EVERY time. Frost may weigh options as an up and comer.

I think it comes down to which is more likely in your or my opinion.

1) A guy wins 2-3 more games a year at a school in the same conference who is historically 2-3 games better

2) A guy who wins a lot of games at a smaller conference and hoping that (wins, recruiting, pressure) also translates to the SEC at the same level

I thought he accepted the job and flew back to tell his team and changed his mind after he got back to his team.

I think there is 2 sides to the draw of great assistants.

1. As you pointed out. $ UT checks that box.
2. Does your head coach or can your head coach attract the great ones? That I don't know about Mullen.

He 'll get better players here than what he can draw at MSU. And I think he's a safe/solid hire. But I don't think he's in the top 3.

Hate to open this back up, but:
1. Verbal agreements are absolutely binding so long as they meet the req'd elements of a contract. The terms can be difficult to prove, if challenged, but they are binding. Certain kinds of agreements can be req'd to be in writing to be enforceable (see Statute of Frauds)
2. MOUs are as binding as they are drafted to be. I've read a bunch of them, and some are practically as ironclad as a formal agreement, and some are explicitly written to bind the parties to nothing. You'd have to have the document in front of you to know.

Edit: drylo'd

FWIW, I think we had Cuonzo Martin actually doing his job under an MOU (not a formal contract) for at least some length of the time he was here. Maybe half a year or a year or so.

Cliffs notes version:

As an assistant:

Position coach for #1 overall draft pick. OC and position coach for heisman trophy winner. OC for two national title teams.

As a head coach:

Has made the worst job in the toughest division of the hardest conference in the country an above average to good program. A program that had only 13 bowl appearances in its history prior to him, he has made 7 in a row and this season will be 8. Has the reputation of maximizing and developing talent and finding good recruits even though all the schools around him have more to offer.
My problem with using historic bowl appearances is that it’s much easier to land in a bowl the last 15 years than before. Not specific to Mullen, just an observation.
