Im still fully on the Gruden train but Im starting to hate the possibility of a Mullen hire a little less. Hes done fairly good job of recruiting (avg #25 ranked class) especially to a place like State. Theyve put a lot more players in the league than we have recently and hes only 45. I wouldnt love him bringing Grantham here but I guess I could live with it.
He MAY take a big step forward and win the division regularly, or he may be 7.5 win Dan. Or he may take a small step forward and be 8.5 win Dan.
Such is the question

If Gruden is out, and Frost goes to Florida, Im going to need some time off, cause you guys know where I stand on that, and options below those two arent my cup of tea

I understand your pessimism regarding Mullen.
However, I would ask two things:
Do you believe Tennessee could offer more money to hire better assistants around Mullen?
Do you think Tennessee allows him to recruit a higher quality athlete?
Hate to open this back up, but:
1. Verbal agreements are absolutely binding so long as they meet the req'd elements of a contract. The terms can be difficult to prove, if challenged, but they are binding. Certain kinds of agreements can be req'd to be in writing to be enforceable (see Statute of Frauds)
2. MOUs are as binding as they are drafted to be. I've read a bunch of them, and some are practically as ironclad as a formal agreement, and some are explicitly written to bind the parties to nothing. You'd have to have the document in front of you to know.
Edit: drylo'd
My problem with using historic bowl appearances is that its much easier to land in a bowl the last 15 years than before. Not specific to Mullen, just an observation.Cliffs notes version:
As an assistant:
Position coach for #1 overall draft pick. OC and position coach for heisman trophy winner. OC for two national title teams.
As a head coach:
Has made the worst job in the toughest division of the hardest conference in the country an above average to good program. A program that had only 13 bowl appearances in its history prior to him, he has made 7 in a row and this season will be 8. Has the reputation of maximizing and developing talent and finding good recruits even though all the schools around him have more to offer.
