If you believe LWS, I recall he was pretty adamant that they would not offer Chip Kelly due to NCAA baggage. And I don't recall any other "insiders" on this board mentioning an offer to Kelly. Currie also emphasized getting an ethical coach in his press conference. I think this is just another dig at UT by some poor excuse of a reporter.

1. The NCAA element concerns me. Going back to Cam Newton, and then the more recent stuff, I don't think this is fully fleshed out. The Chip Kelly matter is closed. I don't want another Tyndall situation.
2. Recruiting. I don't think it's an automatic that any coach will recruit well to UT just because it's UT. And as I've asked many times, how dependent is his program on MS Jucos, and does that come to Knoxville with him?
3. Assistants are a concern to me. He has had many, many DCs, and apparently is loyal to a fault to a subpar OL coach. That dog just doesn't hunt in the SEC, as we saw with Butch.
4. Real concerns that he can't win big games. In their Orange Bowl year, I don't believe they beat anyone better than 8-5.

The counter to these is not just "Starkville." And they aren't prohibitive arguments. I think he's a significant upgrade, but I think there are more significant ones out there. Especially if we are talking 8ish million. He's not worth that.

1. The most valid of your points, but if UT does not vet that to the extreme after everything we've been through, then we are in worse hands than any of us even dreamed.
2. Since Fulmer's last full class, I don't believe we ever finished outside the top 25 in recruiting, this despite all the historic lows and turmoil of that period. So yes, the University does recruit itself to a degree, much more so than Mississippi State.
3. The part about his assistants is a bit uninformed. He has identified and hired a few very good DC's. Geoff Collins was his DC for 4 years, and Manny Diaz has been his DC on 2 separate occasions. Mullen just didn't seem to be able to pony up the cash to keep those guys when bigger programs came calling. His current staff at Mississippi State has more NFL experience than all UT coaches and assistants combined since Kiffin left. As for loyalty, letting Sirmon go after one year and getting Grantham proves that he would pull the trigger if an upgrade on his staff were necessary.
4. At the end of last season, Mullen's winning percentage vs. top 25 teams was exactly the same as James Franklin's. He has one more win than Gus Malzahn over the last 4 years in the same division, despite having only a fraction of the talent.

We absolutely called Chip Kelly to gauge his interest. I don't believe it ever got to an offer because he told us he wasn't interested.

I think Finebaum said Kelly wanted to go to the VOLS. Maybe Kelly was butthurt we didn't offer him.
