CMB didn't exactly blow me away with play calling and I think he knew he had around another year before the excuses ran out and he'd be fired unless things changed

Dobbs looked better, Hurd looked better, the TEs were coming around. CMB IMO was doing alright with the guys he had healthy. I think the next guy as a lot to work with.

If I were making the hire it would be Cumbie. I just don't think Butch goes for a shake up like that. I'd name Cumbie OC, and if CZA took the CM job, I'd hire Quarles as WR coach.

Every time someone brings up Quarles, I can't help but think of this odd dude from Tim and Eric:

I guess George Quarles sounds like James Quall to me.

Everyone Prob thinks it's Debord because he is only one that can afford to interview right now with big recruiting winds all across the nation. So his name is ok to be public. any candidates with a current college job probably have asked that their names stay private so they can finish current recruiting class if they were not to get job or decide not to take.

The feeling I'm afraid will happen when the OC is announced. -

I agree with this completely, his play calling against Vandy two seasons ago, and against UF last season really limited UT's offense in both games. Those were two game when the defense played to win and the offense did not, I put both losses on his shoulders! The UF loss damaged UT's season and credibility. Just imagine how much more respect with recruits UT would have with that monkey off their back!

Why would she do that? Cause he's portly?

Maybe he repeated the same mumbo jumbo ad nauseum and she finally got fed up cause she was trying to have a serious conversation with the other dude about UT football. I know I would be a little less than thrilled if someone did that to me. JMO TIFWIW.

OT: for Cubs fans out there, Ernie Banks has apparently passed away.

Hate that. Got his autograph at a card show in the late 80's. He was sitting beside Mickey Mantle.

Mantle had a rule: hand the ball to his guy on his left, don't talk to him, guy hands it to him and he signs, he hands to his guy on his right that gives to you.

Ernie Banks talked to me for several minutes about God while people waited. I initially only had him sign his name in case I wanted to sell it. I gave it back to him and asked if he would personalize it. He wrote my name followed by "Trust in God".

I found your tale to be both riveting, and it lowered my core body temp.

Kinda makes you feel like your in a car with Rainman.
97x Bam! The future of rock n roll! 97x Bam! The future of rock n roll!

I'm a good driver.

242 toothpicks.

10 minutes to Wapner.

I like Coach Z, and losing him could cost us a recruit or two, but should he leave because he feels like he got passed over, then you just go out and find another stud recruiter to replace him. If his staying around is contingent on being promoted to OC, well, that's just damn extortion. If Butch doesn't feel he's ready, he shouldn't give in to BS like that. Make the best hire you can.

I can't see keeping his recruits as being the determining factor in making CZA your OC and playcaller for the foreseeable future. Those responsibilities are bigger than a few recruits.

One thing I've learned about coaching searches on here is no one knows who will be hired, and it's days of constant belly aching and cliches. Splash hire, Butch guy, underwhelming, young up and comer.

"CBJ shouldn't hire Debord because the fans are/will be upset."
- Hiring a coach because he is popular with fans is a good way to be sitting along with them. Glad Dave Hart didn't take that approach.

"OMG. If Jancek/Azzani leave, I'll die."
- How many people on this board have complained about or called for these two guys' heads until (and even during, for Z) this year? A lot of people on here were furious over the Jancek hire, and UGA fans were on here laughing at it.

"Just promote CZA. It'll allow us to hang on to Preston Williams."
- First, if Preston leaves, the OC will just be the excuse. Hate to say it, but it always been a possibility. Second, naming someone your OC to hang on to one or two recruits (or, even worse, to please the fan base)... is another good way to soon be sitting with the fans. I mean, Bajakian would have been fired 1,000 times during every game if you read the game threads and another 10,000 after every loss (and some wins). Now people are biting their nails about being able to replace him.

Whoever CBJ hires, why not give them a chance to be awful before you pronounce them awful?

This all day. Thought we learned our lesson by judging CBJ before he got here. I was wrong about him and am thoroughly convinced he hires the right guy.

Keep in mind there are dozens on this board that are considered budding stars in the coaching ranks or administration ranks. They know the difference between a good hire and a bad hire, some much more so than our current head coach.

In all seriousness, your post is perfect. Most of the time, the best name for the job is the name people don't want. However, I can't remember too many times that the first primary name discussed was the name that actually ended up with the gig.

Giving chances isn't a weapon in VN's arsenal for the vast majority. Some are ready to call it quits on CBJ next year for anything less than 10 wins. Many called for CJJ's head after year 1. Many called for CMB's head after year 2. Someone will have to be a whipping boy for Tennessee in year 3. I've convinced myself that Tennessee being prominent again on a national level will still lend itself to unhappy fans.

Lost my Ernie Banks autograph ball when I got out of the Navy. I'm certain my Cubs fan roommate took it. I still have his picture that he signed for me. I know it was my roommate because he left my Mantle ball.
