"CBJ shouldn't hire Debord because the fans are/will be upset."
- Hiring a coach because he is popular with fans is a good way to be sitting along with them. Glad Dave Hart didn't take that approach.

"OMG. If Jancek/Azzani leave, I'll die."
- How many people on this board have complained about or called for these two guys' heads until (and even during, for Z) this year? A lot of people on here were furious over the Jancek hire, and UGA fans were on here laughing at it.

"Just promote CZA. It'll allow us to hang on to Preston Williams."
- First, if Preston leaves, the OC will just be the excuse. Hate to say it, but it always been a possibility. Second, naming someone your OC to hang on to one or two recruits (or, even worse, to please the fan base)... is another good way to soon be sitting with the fans. I mean, Bajakian would have been fired 1,000 times during every game if you read the game threads and another 10,000 after every loss (and some wins). Now people are biting their nails about being able to replace him.

Whoever CBJ hires, why not give them a chance to be awful before you pronounce them awful?

Makes too much sense. Good post otherwise. :)

Can't believe I agree with a lawyer. I'm so confused.

He left because his career goal now is to be an NFL OC and get away from recruiting. Not job security.

His goal is to be a HC and with another kid on the way not having the recruiting aspect is nice for him. He wasn't the best recruiter. TB presents a really interesting opportunity for him. Lovie wants him to help build a new offense which sounds a whole lot like they plan to draft Mariota. If they succeed then his name blows up in a league dying for fresh blood

Hate that. Got his autograph at a card show in the late 80's. He was sitting beside Mickey Mantle.

Mantle had a rule: hand the ball to his guy on his left, don't talk to him, guy hands it to him and he signs, he hands to his guy on his right that gives to you.

Ernie Banks talked to me for several minutes about God while people waited. I initially only had him sign his name in case I wanted to sell it. I gave it back to him and asked if he would personalize it. He wrote my name followed by "Trust in God".

Let's play two Ernie

Thanks for sharing this story. It was hard not to root for Ernie even as a fan of a rival club.

Maybe he repeated the same mumbo jumbo ad nauseum and she finally got fed up cause she was trying to have a serious conversation with the other dude about UT football. I know I would be a little less than thrilled if someone did that to me. JMO TIFWIW.

What if the other guy is shady and he was just trying to explain that to her?

I get what you are saying. When hired the whole staff looked underwhelming but....

The defensive staff looked just as good as anybody in the country this year. Coach G and Z are really good on the offensive side of the ball. Together the staff are elite recruiters.

Well dang maybe we should just trust Butch.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying, my point is don't get your hopes up for a big name hire. In the long run whomever he hires may be awesome. But, I anticipate a fairly meh hire.

This all day. Thought we learned our lesson by judging CBJ before he got here. I was wrong about him and am thoroughly convinced he hires the right guy.

You and JC are dead on.

It seems like this thread gained 8 or 9 new or lapsed posters who have done nothing but crank out 2 dozen posts an hour about either Debord, bad numbers, or both.

We get it. Chill.

Like the general message of your post, but I'd be lying if I said I thought Debord was a good hire. If Coach Z leaves because he doesn't get the OC position, it won't bother me. Just hire another great recruiter to fill in the gap. I'd hate to lose Janceck. Sure, plenty of people scoffed when he came here, but he proved himself this year. I'd rather stay consistent on D than risk giving someone else the chance to come here and be awful. I'd rather keep moving forward than risk stepping back.

Jancek isn't in a position to where he'd have to jump at a CMU offer. CMU's coach was the lowest paid head coach in D1 football -- that's why he left to become Arky's OC. Low pay + Michigan winters isn't a great selling point to anyone who isn't 25-30ish or at the very end of their career and seeing it as a last chance to HC. He has four kids ranging from middle school to high school (the oldest is about to attend college, possibly as a walkon QB at UT but regardless dad is paying for his tuition and private school for the other three). That is not the time you uproot your family for a pay cut.

CMU coach also only had 2 years left on his contract and didn't get a vote of confidence from his President. He actually got a longer contract at Arkansas and more money.

One thing to note about the difference between losing Bajakian to the idea of losing Janceck. How many times have we heard Jake is running Butch's offense? How many times have we heard Janceck is running Butch's defense? Butch is more hands on with the O than he is the D. Janceck has run the D quite well. He'd be a much bigger loss than losing Coach Jake.

On Jancek:

"I think it would be a surprise if he made a move if given the chance. I have no idea if they would even offer him the chance. But it would be a pay cut for him and with where this defense is and is going talent wise that move would surprise me."

The feeling I'm afraid will happen when the OC is announced. -

Looks like foreplay to me.

This. When Butch first announced the staff I thought it would be the exact opposite. Within the first half of the 2013 I figured out Jancek was on top of things, while Jake was not SEC ready. But it also was the position coaches he has. Those guys work well as a unit and are really good at what they do. Not so sure that was the case on O.
