I'm completely confused by the board's reaction to these two prospective OC's. Honestly, it really looks like folks don't like Debord because he's 58 - which btw is right at Marc Richt's and Les Miles's age - and only like Durden because he's young since he's not exactly a hot name.

Well to start with Durden is actually an OC currently, not whatever DeBord is... He also has more recent success than nearly 20 years ago. :hi:

Malzahn came from the HS ranks. Chip Kelly came from New Hampshire. Someone had to give them an opportunity.

Debord has not coached in a few years, the game changes. Can he still be a good coach? Who knows, but Durden is at least coaching currently.

Personally I trust Butches decision until the results come in.

Butch could hire Lamarcus Coker as OC and Rick Clausen as QB coach and I wouldn't care. They would just be calling CBJ 's plays and running the offense as they have been instructed to do.

Is it possible that the names we are hearing now are because they are the guys we are able to look at right now?

I seriously doubt you're gonna get a standing OC at a power 5 school to duck out of town for an interview on a Saturday with visitors in town two weeks before signing day. It's bad form. Say we are going after one of the co OC's at TCU or Arizona.... Out of respect to all parties involved wouldn't it be better to wait til after they are done hosting visitors for the weekend?

Just a thought.

Neither did Butch. Neither did the short guy we've got coaching basketball. Neither did Jancek, Stripling, Elder, or Martinez. The last coaches I remember "moving the needle" we're Sal and Kiffin.

My needle is moved by the fact that we won a bowl game this year. By the fact that we've got a handful of 5 stars and a top 10 recruiting class coming in. By the fact that Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina look to be a little bit down. If this hire can keep us on the trajectory that we're on, then my needle doesn't need to go anywhere.

I can understand people feeling that way, I just think It's a stupid, fan-made criteria for people who don't know any more than I do about the process for evaluating and hiring coaches. Whether it "moves the needle" has 0 to do with whether it's the right hire.

Regardless, this place is quickly becoming unreadable. It's sad because the last few weeks were really nice.

Yes, yes, and yes.

If I am Cumbie and CBJ wanted to send a jet to pick me up and discuss an OC spot in the SEC at triple my current salary.....I could find time to block off a 5-6 HR window of time.

Looking at his bio, he's consistently had top offenses at 3 different places in the FCS. I know that's not the SEC but it does tell me that he seems to know what he's doing.

Maybe Butch really liked what he saw, scheme-wise, when UT played Chattanooga last season. Just a thought.

Sweet. Just like Dave Clawson!

There's been a VQ thread for a couple hours. Someone knows a guy in the UTC AD, supposedly.

David Blackburn is the AD at UTC. Worked in UTK's AD office going back to Fulmer. VFL. Many of us hope he replaces Hart when he moves on or retires. Most likely the info has legs.

I dunno bout Rick but Wouldnt mind having Casey on staff

I like Casey a lot. Wish we would have found him a spot earlier. I tell myself now if looking for a QB coach, I might look for one who has run this type of offense. Seeing Casey coach up a kid on running from the QB position would be kinda funny.

When we found out Butch was hired-

When we found out he could actually recruit-

After his second season and a bowl win we be all-

Then we hear Coach Bajakian is leaving-

Now we are repeating. :)

Went back and looked at pics and my vids from the team being introduced at halftime. Didn't see Vic.

I'd say he gone... too bad Vic isn't willing to wait a little bit. Would get plenty of reps his junior and senior year. Patience is not a virtue of the instant gratification generation these days. I wish him the best wherever he goes.

I feel like I'm turning into Leb when it comes to this OC hire, but dammit, it's intriguing the hell out of me.

Pros and cons lists are pretty good for making decisions, so here's the best I can come up with for DeBord:

Pros:
-Is a "plug and play" hire from a personality point of view. Butch knows and trusts him and it's highly unlikely he's at a point in his career to challenge Butch or go against his wishes (could be an issue with hiring young guys).

-Has a national championship ring as an OC. Granted, it was nearly 20 years ago, but it proves that he's not a total buffoon.

-Has experience coaching OL and TE, including in the NFL. In fact, he's primarily an OL coach. Could be a huge upgrade over Mahoney and would free up a coaching spot for a dedicated QB coach if Butch goes that route.

-Has head coaching and admin experience. That's valuable, even if his HC W/L record is less than impressive. He's another guy like Stripling who has decades of experience in football.

-Going along with that, he could serve as an "advisor" of sorts to Butch and Azzanni and pass the torch to Z when he's ready to step up.

Cons:
-He hasn't coached an offense since 2007. If Butch leaves the offense up to him, things could get dicey, especially considering how much football has changed in the last eight years.

-He's old and his recruiting acumen is unknown. Stripling is also an old, fat, bald white guy, but he recruits DL lights out, so I'm withholding judgment.

-He's viewed as "washed up" given that he hasn't been involved in football since 2012. It's doubtful that he would bring any new ideas to the table.

-He brings zero excitement to the table for the fanbase. This isn't hugely important, but this hire would almost certainly be viewed as a dud by fans, recruits, players, and analysts until we actually see results on the field. Would make for a cloudy offseason and might reduce excitement for the 2015 season.

LebAesius?

To tall for RB but if his arms are long enough we could move him to LT.

I saw 2 or 3 guys today in and around the Ray Mears room, believe it or not - they had the look of coaches or coaching candidates. One guy was following our rb coach around - another had a pregnant wife and a toddler in tow and had someone from the ad hovering around them. I didn't see either with cbj but my guess is these two were coaching candidates of some sort,
