Butch honors his word to players and families. That's a huge plus for getting recruits. Players and more importantly, players parents can trust the guy.

Exactly my point in posting "QB" while talking about JJ. He's getting his opportunity (I look for him to RS and switch positions next year).

Sure we probably win 1-2 more games last year but will be rewarded greatly long term.

What about Dorian Banks

Spring camp, fall camp, and the early season. Practice reports mentioned it. Journalists mentioned it. VolNationers dismissed it.

Rucker mentioned him throwing gopher burners and wondered if Dobbs would ever be a good passer. I watched practice videos of the QBs throwing into the end zone. Dobbs was sailing them high, really high, more than he was hitting.

I think it was Larry (LWS) that said a light seemed to come on at some point. I want to say it was either before or after the Ole Miss game.

He was fourth string his freshman year. He didn't even travel to the Florida game. All that, plus it was the second year they were trying to redshirt the kid.

Does no one else remember all this?

Thankfully, he looks light years better after the Alabama game. There are still plenty of other things you can fault Jones for, but I just don't think this is really one of them.
Liked. Sums it up perfect.

The SEC Office has told the SEC Refs that if they call holding on our opponents OL they will be suspended.

Maybe some of us older Vols should have tar and feathers parties once these refs miss the calls...they should understand and be onboard by the oklahoma game at the latest... :)

Just ran through a lot of rival forums.

A lot of folks saying Arkansas will destroy everyone this year & That Botch "Butch" will go 5-6 and not make a bowl game.

The only good pub we are getting is from ESPN .

It's interesting how 80% of rival fans honestly think Butch is an awful coach. Not just average. But truly awful. I've seen him ranked 13th, just ahead of Mason, on a few random lists. Somehow even Mark Stoops gets the benefit of the doubt ahead of him, and McElwain is apparently a consensus pick as a much better coach than Jones.

Sounds like us talking about a number of teams that whooped our ass (UF, Ole Miss, Mizzou, etc.)

Go back and tell them we play 12 games.

And we will win 9 of them

I believe a lot of that is simply just the desire for Butch to be the next Zook because of the way he is recruiting. A lot of us were saying the same thing about Freeze, who turned out to be an excellent coach. The biggest thing I'm concerned with is how much control Butch had on the offense last year, but that will come to light this year

Agreed. It's wishful thinking. Tennessee being down has been a huge boon for virtually every SEC team in recent years. Even Kentucky and Vandy had chances to pick our bones.

Teams have used us to pad stats, pad win columns, make highlight reels, steal in-state recruits, and get to better bowl games.

Many are about to find out how awful he is...

SOON!!

That gives me sads.

Tennessee's situation is eerily similar to FSU's right before they tipped again. A number of people said the exact same things about Jimbo (can only recruit, loses to Wake, can't finish, etc.). FSU's 3rd year was a good year, but the 4th they had finally completely built back that depth and won the NC. I think we are taking a nearly identical path

SIAP.
Listening to the radio travelling yesterday and Neuheisel was asked about returning QB's. He ran through a list, then said if he was starting a team today, he would want Josh Dobbs or the kid at Cal. Raved about Dobbs and said he would work in any system.

Random question, but was watching some older games on youtube, and wondered why the ncaa banned the tinted and mirrored visors some of our guys used to wear. Those things looked badazz.

The true reason why you cannot wear tinted visors is for the reason of that football player getting injured on a play. Some of the players that get hurt on the field are in so much pain that it is hard for them to talk because they are using all of their energy to try to take the pain they are experiencing, so the dark tinted visors come in to the fact that a lot of the time, the team doctors and trainers and all look in the players eyes as an easy way of seeing how much pain they are in. If they are wearing a dark tinted visor, it is hard to do that, at least before they get the helmet off.

This is all my opinion, albeit, I'd like to think it's based in logic given the evidence.

I think you guys might be playing up that promise a bit. It was almost certainly a factor, but it was burned two years in a row.

That said, one unintended consequence of that redshirt promise might have been in his preparation. By all accounts Dobbs seemed to prepare hard, and he certainly knew the offense. But it makes you wonder if he might have taken a more lackadaisical approach in his mental/attitude preparation because he was so far from starting. Almost like his focus wasn't quite sharp enough. Then, like so many, it just clicked at some point. Perhaps it "helped" to see Worley dinged up and struggling.

I apologize if this is all rambling drivel. :)

Then we both must must dish out the rambling drivel. The simplistic answer of what a third party says they saw in a practice in spring or even fall camp is as a useless as burnt toast in my book. The game. It's all about the game and the practice leading up to the game. Not trying to go all AI on everybody, but if you are buried on the depth chart throwing to scout teamers most of the time, there's not a lot to be focused about. The scheme was even designed and plays called to practice for Worley at QB. Josh knows he is being RS'd and then, boom, he's not. As Worley got blown up each week it got real for Josh, he could see what was coming before any of us did. Real players elevate their games when the lights go on. Dobbs is one of those guys. If people will be honest about it they saw flashes of what it could be his freshman year. Yet, we all knew he would sit the bench when this past season started.

Makes sense. Thanks
