It's a lot closer than you think, talent wise.

I'm not trading Barnett/Maggitt for anyone.

Agreed on Barnett/Maggitt.

As for DT, we still only have two proven guys in O'Brien and Williams. Vickers is a spring practice hero but there's no guarantee that translates to the field, and KMack/Tuttle are freshmen.

4th quarter, "we will outlast you in the trenches" three-deep elite DT depth is still probably two years away, although landing guys like Brown/Rochester/Lawrence might put us there by 2016, especially if Picou is ready to go by then.

I hate to be a downer but eventually other schools and possibly the NFL are going to make a run at Butchco. Maybe not at the end of next season but I could see the following season having us in major Kermit mode. It's only a matter of time.

If Butch does what we believe he is about to do, there will be no other place in college football that would be more attractive. Fanbase, tradition, facilities, location... He has it all if he wins

Beating a dead horse here but...

If Dobbs starts from the beginning of last season, we win that game and maybe more. It remains my biggest beef with Jones...but water under the bridge.

Beat Florida this year and all won't be forgiven but....close.

All indications were he showed no signs of being ready at that point in the season.

As for other schools, Butch would be dumb to leave with all this talent and momentum built. He is on the verge of something special here. Michigan made a run at him and was rejected quickly.

I agree. IMO we never lose him to another school. NFL could happen I guess but honestly idk if Butch is the type of guy that would like the NFL.

I've never bought that...especially given his performance the second he stepped foot on the field in the Bama game. All of a sudden, the offense worked. I don't think the coaches were blind to that--they knew what they had, IMO.

My suspicions, not that I blame them much, either, is that Butch and co. wanted to slow-play Dobbs and use this year to develop because Worley was "good enough for now." In the end, I think it cost us a game or two; the Florida game for certain.

No matter which way you sliced it, playing Dobbs or sitting him and hoping that Worley could perform well enough to keep the job through the season, it was a high risk, high reward proposition. I tend to think that we came out on the lower end of that scenario but...water under the bridge.

I'm not going to dwell on it. The few complaints I have about Butch aren't that big of a deal in the long run.

If I've gained anything over the last few weeks, it's patience and perspective.

Apparently he looked awful throwing the ball in fall camp last season.

I still think we win that game just by adding him as an additional rushing threat, even if he wasn't nearly ready from a passing standpoint.

Spring camp, fall camp, and the early season. Practice reports mentioned it. Journalists mentioned it. VolNationers dismissed it.

Rucker mentioned him throwing gopher burners and wondered if Dobbs would ever be a good passer. I watched practice videos of the QBs throwing into the end zone. Dobbs was sailing them high, really high, more than he was hitting.

I think it was Larry (LWS) that said a light seemed to come on at some point. I want to say it was either before or after the Ole Miss game.

He was fourth string his freshman year. He didn't even travel to the Florida game. All that, plus it was the second year they were trying to redshirt the kid.

Does no one else remember all this?

Thankfully, he looks light years better after the Alabama game. There are still plenty of other things you can fault Jones for, but I just don't think this is really one of them.

The other thing is Butch promised his parents when he flipped him from ASU to redshirt him. He never expected to have to burn it both years due to injuries at the QB position and a less than serviceable 3rd option.

I am trying hard to be patient. As I age and my health gets worse at the point to where it is harder and harder to attend games it is getting harder to be so though.

That part, I do believe, and I think it was one of the factors that kept him on the bench. Perhaps not the most decisive one but, definitely one.

I remember it. You are right on all of this. I think an unfortunate promise to his parents to redshirt him ( and probably getting their blessing before the redshirt was burned ) played a large factor in Dobbs coming in so late last year. With him just in a few more situations we probably win 2 more games. Hopefully CBJ learns from this. Families should not dictate win players are played. In fairness to CBJ he was just honoring a promise that was emphasized a second time after Dobbs frosh year, but maybe he should have realized sooner that keeping that promise would be tough and informed the family earlier. Lessons learned that will hopefully never be repeated.

Butch loves UT. Only school I was worried about was Michigan and there's no need to worry now.

No he asked how many recruits we sign, not our baseball record.

Indeed. He has stated several times the Tennessee is the end game for him. He will not go anywhere. Too much good stuff will happen here when he starts winning.

The way the fanbase has embraced Butch makes me think he will never leave voluntarily. He's like peak Fulmer combined with Bruce Pearl. Almost a cult of personality influence on the program now. You can see it in recruiting, too. Every elite kid we're in on talks about Jones and how big of an influence he is on his decision. I don't know how he does it but the guy is a phenomenal recruiter who goes beyond just selling the program.

Not to get all Leb on you guys, but we'd have to see some major attrition again if we're to get over 20. With 13 scholarship seniors, plus maybe Sutton/North looking to leave early, that still would make us encourage at least 5 underclassmen to "look elsewhere" just to get to 20. Harder to find where those come from with each top class Butch Stones brings in.

I've always thought that way down the road the NFL way the biggest threat. Well respected guy, but again that's way down the road

Yessir, several years. If the NFL does come calling, it probably means UT is back to its winning ways.

This is all my opinion, albeit, I'd like to think it's based in logic given the evidence.

I think you guys might be playing up that promise a bit. It was almost certainly a factor, but it was burned two years in a row.

That said, one unintended consequence of that redshirt promise might have been in his preparation. By all accounts Dobbs seemed to prepare hard, and he certainly knew the offense. But it makes you wonder if he might have taken a more lackadaisical approach in his mental/attitude preparation because he was so far from starting. Almost like his focus wasn't quite sharp enough. Then, like so many, it just clicked at some point. Perhaps it "helped" to see Worley dinged up and struggling.

I apologize if this is all rambling drivel. :)

Please keep it that way.

Butch honors his word to players and families. That's a huge plus for getting recruits. Players and more importantly, players parents can trust the guy.

Exactly my point in posting "QB" while talking about JJ. He's getting his opportunity (I look for him to RS and switch positions next year).

Sure we probably win 1-2 more games last year but will be rewarded greatly long term.
