Mike Keith is commentating the UT v MSst on SEC Network. He should do VOL football. I really like him with the Titans.

Keith was on the "short list" to get the Vol Network job but Kesling had the inside track. Keith is much better and should have gotten the job.

The guy who does the Lady Vols' basketball games is very good too. He dropped my jaw the first time I heard him because it had been so long since I heard a really good announcer.

Looks like CDS is going to survive this season after all. Congrats to the diamond Vols. Bold move to shelve 4 guys before this series. Obviously was the right thing to do.

All the more reason to keep the name. Nike shouldn't be telling ANY university what to call their teams and the article provides several instances where Nike has imposed major changes on universities.

Regardless of whether or not you're indifferent to the specific change from Lady Vols to Vols it matters that Nike had an influence on this and was very likely the ONLY reason for the change.

Consider this: How upset would everyone be if Nike told the AD that:

"The name "Vols" and "Volunteers" should be dropped to 'avoid its militaristic associations and warlike nature.' Furthermore, the Power T logo displayed on gear, helmets, etc. requires modernization and an outright change in design. Because your brand has an emotional connection with your students, staff and alumni, it is critical to keep the development of the work confidential and on a need-to-know basis."

I'm fairly certain mattresses would burn around here if those changes were proposed let alone imposed on our beloved football team. And if you think that's outlandish then you should read the article. Much of what I wrote above are paraphrased statements from Nike and the last sentence (underlined) is a quote from Nike in full.

As we were leaving the game, I believe I saw Dave Hart leaving campus in his car. I told my brother and son, "Well Dave Hart is going home, no one to fire today!"

Are people really calling for Serrano to be fired?

Some are. It's not to a fever pitch yet. He has a 5th year on his contract, so he is good to go for now. I haven't formed an opinion on an extension. He really needs one to recruit well, but hasn't really earned one yet. There was every reason to believe he could turn this around by now. But they digressed this season. This team was absolutely pathetic at times. It's one thing not to hit well. It's another to play horrid defense and do stupid things on the base paths so often. About half the season went that way. But he may have revealed the issue was primarily attitude with a handful of his more experienced players. He sat 4 of them and took them off the 27 man roster this past week. The team seemed to have responded well, even though they were playing a bad MS State team. They played an equally bad UGA team and got swept earlier in the season with those guys playing, so I tend to believe the roster move had the desired effect. They looked like we expected them to look all season.

My question to Nike would be, "Who at Nike wants the Lady Vols name to go away and why?" To me it has to be either an issue with someone at the corporate level that doesn't like Tennessee's women athletes being called "ladys" because of some silly political correct reason or they just don't like Tennessee. Making the clothes with different names can't be a problem. The "Power T" can be used on a jersey with "Lady" on it. Having a totally different product than Adidas could also be a part of it. The UT administration should just tell Nike to leave the Lady Vols as it was.

That's not jyo, that's fact. Keith is known as one of the best in the business, even arky media people recognize him as a great one. Nothing needs to be said about kesling...

He is good, surprised he's playing 2nd fiddle. He could get a football/men's BB job somewhere for sure.

My guess is that it's a combo of things. If NIKE redesigns any unis they make more money, the switch might also mean dropping the blue and other LV team designs (I *don't know that for sure tho'), depending on the uni and logo redesigns (say they instituted a tweaked blue power T) NIKE could gain proprietary rights over the LVs which = more cash, and Nike produces EVERYTHING overseas in 3rd world countries, meaning it likely makes things a whole lot cheaper for team gear which is really where they make money (a blue power t is embroidered, for example and like I said they may well gain ownership of any new LV design which would offset the costs of that - not that it amounts to anything given the pricing but Nike pays workers pennies, sees that as worth it because they're looking everywhere and is notoriously cheap on the production).

Oh and buying UT orange in bulk lowers costs a lot.

In truth I think it's all about the benjamins and gaining at least partial control over the LV trade marks/logos. UT owns our means logos etc. And of course they're trying to get fans to buy new gear and softball, especially is starting to really take off.

IOW, you can just about lay $$$ down (and I mean major $$$) that it's all about money for them.

Enki- thanks for those memories. I was blessed, as a freshman at UT, to be able to attend every game you posted. I made 11 of the 13 games. Probably the best fall of my life.

+1...amazing memories!! It was my freshman year too..best time of my life. Fortunate enough to have made it to all 13 games. The most fun 5 month period I've ever had. Truly a special, special time that I will never forget!!!

VolsDoc, question for ya... How are you when it comes to knowing meds inside and out - iow, how good a 'chemist' are you ;-) in terms of understanding drugs beyond just 'prescribe x or y if patient has z?' I hope that didn't come across as offensive as I understand you have tons of knowledge about meds but hopefully you get what I'm trying to ask you even if I'm doing it poorly. :)

I know the ones that I prescribe well.
Also ones that frequently cause side-effects that mimic medical problems that I treat.
Any that can affect what I treat or that can interact meds that I use...

There are So many medications, no one can know everything about all of them.
I look up medications frequently.

With my patients, I have found side effects that have not been attributed to themed before. The reps do not like me for that, they have lots of paperwork when that happens.

Does that answer you're question?

Mickey Dearstone?

He's definitely the one but tbh, I think it would take an act of God to unseat Kessling. He knows too many people and they will keep him around until he steps down, imo, barring a major scandal. I honestly think beyond the all the right people he knows, local tv really enjoys having one of their own in and that's part of what the powers that be fear -- not all but enough to matter.

It's a damn shame too. Kessling has his skills but announcing is NOT one of them.

Great post! We've played some pretty good ball in the last 1/4 of the season. Maybe that's been the issue all along.

Regardless of what's transpired this year, DS has to take a different approach to recruiting. He's been hosed by the MLB draft so far in his tenure. He has to recruit kids that are "signable". Just my .02.
