John Ward at his finest, at the 15:29 mark.

"Snap down, kick is up, BLOCKED. Chasing after the ball, who comes out of there with it? Tennessee will have possession, they're going to run with the football, as its picked away to the 25 to the 30, to the 35 to the 40. Breaks to the outside! To the 45 to the 50, to the 45 to the 40. Floyd Miley can fly. Floyd Miley has the ball at the 15, at the 10, at the 5, HE HAS GONE ALL. THE. WAY. TOUCHDOWN, BIG ORANGE."

Listening to John Ward is like traveling back in time. Gives me chills every time!

OldVol, I've been following UT sports just a few years less than you and agree completely with your observation as to why the term "Lady Vol" has come to represent women sports. You can call Nike at (800)345-6453 select 0 for customer service and voice your concerns. They'll also send a complaint form.

Also, the university is conducting its yearly phonathon asking for donations. The student I spoke with said a signicant number of alumni declined to donate because of this controversy. I hope Cheek had a contingency plan for academic funding. It won't come from athletics.

Thanks SportsVol. I'll try to make that call tomorrow. I'll try to let VN know what they tell me (if anything).

You think that that many donors are refusing to donate based on this? I am willing to bet the money will still be there.

I was a student at UT when Coach 'Head' started and when women's basketball was played in the girl's gym. I remember the 'volettes' and Coach 'creating' the Lady Vols. I remember thinking we should just all be Vols and wishing we didn't have that sissy blue....as time passed I was a witness to what the Lady Vols became - the pride and the spirit of Tennessee represented by all women's sports - all part of One Tennessee. If our legacy Vols don't want to lose that - we can figure out a way to honor that and the Power T.

Why do we have to be trapped in the past to remember the Lady Vols history? I'm pretty sure if they were Volunteers like they should be, they would still have the same amazing history.

I know you're going to think I'm being extreme but what if we decided to take Neyland off our stadium name? It's still the same stadium... I've been reading a lot of these letters from our legacy Lady Vols and I've sorta changed my perspective. My apologies for going off on a tangent

My fanship is not based upon our color being orange or our name being the Volunteers. For all I care they could incorporate purple into our uniforms; as long as there is a team playing at our beloved university in Knoxville, I am a fan.

No dude no
We are not the Big orange and purple...
Stop this madness
You should mock nike

No, its fine man. I'm just genuinely curious. It just seems ridiculous. This whole thing just seems ridiculous. We are the only school fighting for this side of this issue as opposed to wanting the athletes of a university to be under one banner. I just think its crazy.

Two or three years from now when Nike starts making changes to jerseys, etc. adding different shades of green, blue, purple and other colors to them and fans complain the University will say no one has complained before. Then when the football team comes out to a home game wearing green pants with orange stripes and grayish-blue jerseys with orange numbers and purple "Power T's" it will hit the fan. Nike will suggest that we all buy one so we can get used to the new colors.
It's better to stop the bus before it leaves town, it'll be too late then.

I understand your point of view but that's not my (or VolsDoc's) point. I think most would remain fans, albeit there'd be many pissed off ones, because there'd be no choice. However, the point is a corporation shouldn't be making these decisions or deciding what our 'brand' is. They have their own interests that have nothing to do with ours.

When our color was chosen - students chose it. Our nickname references our state as well as the UT dragoons who were a part of the original volunteers who earned our state and UT's nickname by volunteering to fight. These things are a part of our identity. Who we are and what we represent (the entire university not just teams) is attached to these things. It's a part of campus and university culture and far bigger than a sports team.

These things are our heritage, our identity, and with the nickname Volunteers, something the university (students, alums, faculty/staff) aspire to represent at all times. We take it less seriously as students (I did anyway) but it means a great deal to most later on.

Being a Vol and all that entails connects me to my fellow alums instantly as well as current students. It's a bond we share and always will.

**Again it's different when things change without outside interference.

This is eloquent and excellent!
Should be sent to nike and UT admin...
:hi:

They should also know that interference with Volunteers may result in a visit to their CEOs home from butchna and catbone...and nobody wants that... :)

I hear you - and that's where I was until I began to read what our legacy Lady Vols from sports other than basketball had to say about what "Lady Vols" means to them - we are smart enough to figure this out....and we shouldn't default to Nike for the answer. We Are Tennessee.

Well no doubt I would be pissed and I'm already compiling some mocking material for Nike, but on the real though: I love our university and its sports teams, if Dooley couldn't change that then nothing will.

So....we want Adidas back? Or maybe Russell?

No.

We want nike.

But nike needs to understand that Tennessee makes the decisions and nike makes it. They may present ideas, but dictate absolutely nothing. This was my only concern with nike. They have no tradition nor respect for others traditions.

The "Lady Whatevers" probably meant something to every school in the country before they all streamlined to be under one banner. Now, our tradition in women's basketball is better than anyone's but just because we change the name like it should be, with everyone being a Volunteer doesn't mean we have to ignore or forget all of that tradition. I'm not trying to **** on you or anyone or even on the Lady Vols name, I just think the amount of anger is just silly.

We are the only school that can have Lady Vols. We are the only school that can be the Tennessee Volunteers. We should be concerned with what makes our school different and better than to be concerned with how much money we can make for Nike.
