John Ward at his finest, at the 15:29 mark.
"Snap down, kick is up, BLOCKED. Chasing after the ball, who comes out of there with it? Tennessee will have possession, they're going to run with the football, as its picked away to the 25 to the 30, to the 35 to the 40. Breaks to the outside! To the 45 to the 50, to the 45 to the 40. Floyd Miley can fly. Floyd Miley has the ball at the 15, at the 10, at the 5, HE HAS GONE ALL. THE. WAY. TOUCHDOWN, BIG ORANGE."
OldVol, I've been following UT sports just a few years less than you and agree completely with your observation as to why the term "Lady Vol" has come to represent women sports. You can call Nike at (800)345-6453 select 0 for customer service and voice your concerns. They'll also send a complaint form.
Also, the university is conducting its yearly phonathon asking for donations. The student I spoke with said a signicant number of alumni declined to donate because of this controversy. I hope Cheek had a contingency plan for academic funding. It won't come from athletics.

Why do we have to be trapped in the past to remember the Lady Vols history? I'm pretty sure if they were Volunteers like they should be, they would still have the same amazing history.
My fanship is not based upon our color being orange or our name being the Volunteers. For all I care they could incorporate purple into our uniforms; as long as there is a team playing at our beloved university in Knoxville, I am a fan.
I know you're going to think I'm being extreme but what if we decided to take Neyland off our stadium name? It's still the same stadium... I've been reading a lot of these letters from our legacy Lady Vols and I've sorta changed my perspective. My apologies for going off on a tangent

I understand your point of view but that's not my (or VolsDoc's) point. I think most would remain fans, albeit there'd be many pissed off ones, because there'd be no choice. However, the point is a corporation shouldn't be making these decisions or deciding what our 'brand' is. They have their own interests that have nothing to do with ours.
When our color was chosen - students chose it. Our nickname references our state as well as the UT dragoons who were a part of the original volunteers who earned our state and UT's nickname by volunteering to fight. These things are a part of our identity. Who we are and what we represent (the entire university not just teams) is attached to these things. It's a part of campus and university culture and far bigger than a sports team.
These things are our heritage, our identity, and with the nickname Volunteers, something the university (students, alums, faculty/staff) aspire to represent at all times. We take it less seriously as students (I did anyway) but it means a great deal to most later on.
Being a Vol and all that entails connects me to my fellow alums instantly as well as current students. It's a bond we share and always will.
**Again it's different when things change without outside interference.
No, its fine man. I'm just genuinely curious. It just seems ridiculous. This whole thing just seems ridiculous. We are the only school fighting for this side of this issue as opposed to wanting the athletes of a university to be under one banner. I just think its crazy.
No dude no
We are not the Big orange and purple...
Stop this madness
You should mock nike
Stay true to your school!
:salute:
I hear you - and that's where I was until I began to read what our legacy Lady Vols from sports othrer than basketball had to say about what "Lady Vols" means to them - we are smart enough to figure this out....and we shouldn't default to Nike for the answer. We Are Tennessee.
