Speaking of the Oklahoma game, with all the many really smart moves made by Butch and staff, for me the move of having two true freshmen starting side by side against Oklahoma in Norman when one was a center playing right tackle was without a doubt the most puzzling move he made last season. That he stayed with it until Thomas was hurt was the second most puzzling move. It was destined for failure from the start.

We can all point to plays and game situation decisions that we question. But those were who plays and for how long decisions. Glad that appears to be a thing of the past. It appears that is another area that DeBord adds great value to the offense.

Yeah that's tough but Coleman wouldn't have faired any better at LT covering Worleys blind side

I heard several people analyzing the game last year against OK argue exactly that we should have run at him, not away from him. That is how you neutralize someone who is a speed rusher only. Send someone to get in his way and read how he reacts...

Granted, I don't know what I'm talking about, but it makes sense to me.

This is 100% correct. A DE with run responsibilities would not be able to attack the way he did

Tidbit on Kirkland from Hubbs

Of course it was a baptism by fire for the newcomers with The Program, but the newcomers have been pretty impressive early on. Darrin Kirkland Jr. has been a name that's been talked about for months even though he didn't go through spring practice. Kirkland is now back to doing things physically and while the early praise for him has been in his mental approach and memory ability. He is starting to impress physically as he does more and more. Obviously the linebacker position is one that is very physical and the real judgement will be when the pads go on in August, but Kirkland is clearly a guy that there's a lot of excitement about.

Jr with his worst performance at a camp to date.

MTSU was baaaaaaaaaaaad.

Warm up and immediately kick 55 yard FGS off the ground with (my favorite part of the story) THE HEAD FREAKING COACH HOLDING FOR THE KICKS.

It was brutal. Kid with the big leg from UT CAMP was there and only hit a few.

Oh well. Need to move on

Stockstill is a genuinely good guy, whatever your opinion is on his coaching. I had a class in the football facility and would usually see him hanging around the building after it let out. We'd shoot the sh!t about class, football, the upcoming season, and whatever else every now and then. Doesn't seem like much, but it was cool that a D1 football coach would take the time to do that with a student he didn't know.

Stock was alright. Jr wasn't expecting him to hold for the kicks. Guess that coupled with kicking off the ground threw his game off. He was terrible tonight.

He punted really well though.

My comments were directed towards Jr's performance. I like Stockstill.

Marquez Callaway visited today. Had a really good time. Top 100 recruit and former Bama commit. Could be on commit watch to us.

Yes please! I think it was GFW that mentioned a few weeks back that there were a couple of top 100 guys that could be close to pulling the trigger, and that they were prospects that really weren't on VN's radar, but the coaches had been on them for a while. Maybe this is one of them?

In his defense, warm up and straight to 55 yarders is a pretty terrible camp set up.

Also straight to ground would be rough for most high schoolers, need a few kicks with the block for confidence then switch to ground.

That's like starting with your 3 iron on the range. Start with your wedge and go from there. I agree- pretty bad idea.

Coach Stockstill is a good guy. I think they were weeding out with that set up.

Probably wanted to see who was mentally tough just as much as he wanted to see if anyone could hit from 50+...

Snap and clear, I suppose. Jr will get 'em next time.

I was more mad at myself for not having him kick off the ground more in practice.

There will be a huge difference in him next summer. As soon as this upcoming season is over, he said he will never use a block (tee) again.

CBJ would be proud of how that was done, he's all about "sudden change"!

Anyway, I have a friend who had two sons that were placekickers. He actually had them kicking off the ground the Spring/Summer before their Senior year and then kicked off the ground during their Senior years. Both kicked in college and one was on scholarship. Said it was the best thing they did to get them off the tee after their Junior season. Jr. will be fine, you have plenty of time! :good!:

Former two star recruit showing a dude how silly star worshipping is :)
