Recruiting Forum Football Talk XVIII

Butch has that "IT" factor when talking to recruits. In the few times my kid has talked with him (camps and when he recruited JJ), Jr came away talking about how "down to Earth and personal" he is. Butch knows how to connect with these kids and has an incredible memory.

Jr met him for the first time at Blackman when he was recruiting JJ. My kid being the die hard Vol fan that we all are, ran up to him and talked to him in the locker room. Butch took the time to talk to him about kicking, grades, and his goals.

Fast forward several months to Specialists camp in Knoxville. Butch was addressing the campers when he walked by Jr. He said "I know you, you play at Blackman". My kid was blown away. How many kids does this guy see in a years time? Butch freaking remembered the conversation he had with this kid in the locker room.

He has a huge impact on recruiting. Kids like him. They can relate to him. You can see it in days like yesterday.

I have heard this from multiple folks when he comes through their school. they are shocked at how he goes out of his way to know everyone's names and comes back and typical can spit them off. Granted these were schools with top targets.

I wonder who won this battle (other than Butch Jones).

It's not right for her to do that regardless of the circumstances. You don't make fun of people who are poorer, presumably less educated and/or maybe aren't great looking or as good looking as you are EVER because there's a power and class differential that makes it cruel rather than snarky or funny (and yes, that goes for all of us regular folks too).

However, I wonder what, if anything at all, precipitated it or if she's just being a buh-!tch. There's obviously several cuts in the tape that may be cutting out a back and forth exchange but again you just don't treat people this way no matter what so it's pure curiosity on my part.

That said, one thing she was spot on about was her comment about tow companies only caring about taking peoples money.

I understand tow companies being jackwads and know many run cons when it comes to trolling and towing cars that are parked in lots or on the street (many even tow vehicles illegally) and I understand that getting towed puts folks in a foul mood but it's not an excuse to treat people badly unless there's other things we don't know about and even then you should have more sense and politeness than what this looks like.

She made a major mistake here, imo, on several levels.

When someone is speaking in anger, you see a bit more of them than you normally do. Those filters get bypassed.

What I saw was ugly.

Who are the 3 players that you see Butch taking with him to SEC Media Days?

1. Maggitt- I think this one is a given.

2. Kerbyson- RS Sr- Leader of the OL

3. I think Dobbs could be the 3rd player. He's a good interviewer.

Could also see him taking Sutton, instead of Dobbs.

I was thinking about this.

Here is the pool of potential selections IMO.

Dobbs, Kerby, Mack, Pig, Curt, JRM, Cam and Randolph.

I think Dobbs is a given. He is the face of the program the next two years.

Mack and Curt have been before so I could see Kerby being the OL selection.

Hard to pick against Curt but I think Butch rewards Pig and takes him.

Dobbs is a lock to go. He is a walking PR Dept dream. They will put him everywhere they can.

Safe to say Maggit goes too I would think.

Then I'll go with JRM.

Good point on Dobbs.

But also with sutton. He will likely be a first rounder next year. Gotta want his face associated with UT as much as possible.

Maggit seems like a good bet. Heart and soul.

Yeah that's a good problem to have is having a tough time deciding which leaders to bring since you have so many. When he first got here it wasn't very hard for him to pick 3. The reason I think he takes JRM over Sutton is JRM seems to not mind the media spotlight as much. Sutton comes off to me a as one that doesn't mind it but prefers to keep to himself if he doesn't have to. JRM is always mentioned as a leader in the program by Butch when asked so I think he leans to him for the 3rd spot.

Dobbs is the best player suited for that. Dude is a standout student, great personality, and a leader for one of the trendiest teams in college football.

Just catching up on the practice updates from yesterday, and surprisingly noticed neither Crowder nor Sanders were in the two deep.
