Nick Saban has never once lowered his expectations to being competitive against a rival. He doesn't celebrate being close. He finds a close loss more frustrating than any other loss, because that means his team let an opportunity get away.

Saban expects to win, he demands it and he's pissed as hell after a loss. He hates to lose. He doesn't excuse it. He doesn't rationalize it. He doesn't think being close is any sort of victory.

And that's exactly why he wins and that's how he has developed a championship program at two schools. I hope to hell our players have that mentality and not the "oh, well, we tried, we'll get 'em next year when we're better" mentality. And I think our players do. I think they're pissed as hell they lost, and I don't think being "close" is any consolation at all. I'm glad they have that fire in their belly... unlike that segment of the fanbase whose fire turned to ashes back in the Dooley Days.

Get this nick Saban bs out of here gahhhhh

I moved the timeline up after what I saw today. Jones and Hall and Kirkland and Martin and just so much heart and talent. It is fun to watch again. The Jimmy and Joes are there and more are coming and some will have another year in a college program.

You should know that one game, win or loss doesn't make a team. Don't get me wrong, I'm very encouraged gor the future too. How are you going to take it if we lose another one this year?

Any loss the rest of the way would be the worst loss of Butch's career. He never had a truly bad loss at CMU, never had one at Cincy. Hasn't had one here yet. A loss to any team on the rest of the schedule would be a very bad loss.

Y'all ready to go 6-0?

Gonna be a fun ending to the season.

IF we get next week, then I think we win out. My only concern with next week is that if the team comes out flat like they played against Arkansas. That type of effort could get us beat. But...if we put it to the Cats then, I think we roll Mizzou, North Texas, South Carolina, and Vandy.

Depends on how they play. It isn't one game. It is this season. i also see the coaches growing in game as well.

Really happy with the play on both sides tonight besides the last series on each side. Our defense looked legit most of the night. Vereen and Kirkland are becoming studs. The Josh's played great again. Hurd, Kamara, and Dobbs did their thing. I think that last scoring drive is a wake up call to the rest of the SEC for next year. We will score like Oregon next year if we stay healthy.

Great post. Unfortunately, the idiots you speak of probably didn't read it, because they are too busy trying to think of the next stupid thing they want to type.

I mean seriously...I believe everyone is pissed that we lost. I believe everyone is pissed that we could be 6-1 or 7-0 right now. I also believe that anyone that doesn't see how close we are and what a great job CBJ has done in finding and developing players is a hopeless person that does not even deserve to watch my beloved Vols play.

The bulk of our team tonight was Freshmen, RS Freshmen and Sophomores tonight and yet they played toe to toe with the #8 team in the country.

Toe to toe is the big thing. This team punched Bama in the mouth right in their backyard. Sacks, Tfl and a smashmouth ground game.

So proud of this team and the toughness they showed. Earned a lot of respect from knowledgeable football people today.

You can't miss all 3 FG's. Just can't.

Too many points left on the board. Can't do it on the road against a team that good.

The defense came to play though. Super proud of them. All around gutty effort against a team that you really felt like could take it to the house every play. They never let it happen or gave up the big play. Huge change from the last few games. Justin Martin rose the level of play out of the defensive backs. He's the future there. really sucks we didn't have him playing at that level all year.

Malone played really good again. Him and Josh Smith are our best receivers right now.

Dobbs looks razor sharp passing sometimes. If we could have given him a little more time in the pocket a play here or there, we probably win.

That illegal formation penalty on Chance Hall... Turning point of that last possession. That's the risk with playing freshman in huge moments.

I'm crushed honestly. Bama caught tons of breaks and made some huge plays down the stretch. Frustratingly typical.

But it was nice to get punched in the mouth early in that game and answer with our own set of punches. We established early that we were gonna be around all day. That's a huge change from the last few years.

I'm done with expectations. I just want to follow this team game by game and root for the best. The schedule looks encouraging down the stretch for sure. Some of these matchups worry me though.

Sick of Bama. Sick of losing. Sick of feeling sick. But the progress is evident. We're building this thing. I think our trajectory looks similar to Dan Mullens at MS State. But better recruiting. Our ceiling is much higher in the long run.

Encouraged for the rest of the season. Things could look a lot brighter down the road if we finish strong.

I posted way earlier about how necessary it was for Dobbs to not throw any interceptions today. Super lucky those 3 possible INT's didn't happen. Could've been huge momentum shifts. And a big difference in the score. It seems those dropped INTs and Medley's misses were on the same page. The dropped INTs were so lucky, I kept thinking the ball is bouncing our way. We could win this. But that last play, kick in the nuts. Medley needs major help mentally. He should probably kick all game against N. Texas. Go up by 14. Kick field goals rest of the game. Really impressed today by the players fight on both sides of the ball. That's the best we've ever played AL since Kiffin coached us. Think Danielson said that's the first lead we've had in the 4th since 06. We're right on the cusp. Necessary to win out the season and win a good bowl game.

Yeah but check his record at Michigan state the first 3 years.A team he took over that much like ours was low on talent and then come back and tell me how great a coach he is.It was his first big gig much like Tennessee is Butch's. With one exception he didn't have to rebuild in the most competitive conference in America.Be patient it is a process. We should have never been in that game today if you compare rosters. Not saying moral victories are what we at Tennessee should ever accept but give it a little time. They were at 100% full strength roster wise.We on the other hand started 3 true freshman and have lost multiple starters plus maybe our best Dl in Maggitt.
