Thought we had them the whole time. Never game until the fumble.
This has just been a gut punch of a season.
But we are close. We are growing.
Nick Saban has never once lowered his expectations to being competitive against a rival. He doesn't celebrate being close. He finds a close loss more frustrating than any other loss, because that means his team let an opportunity get away.
Saban expects to win, he demands it and he's pissed as hell after a loss. He hates to lose. He doesn't excuse it. He doesn't rationalize it. He doesn't think being close is any sort of victory.
And that's exactly why he wins and that's how he has developed a championship program at two schools. I hope to hell our players have that mentality and not the "oh, well, we tried, we'll get 'em next year when we're better" mentality. And I think our players do. I think they're pissed as hell they lost, and I don't think being "close" is any consolation at all. I'm glad they have that fire in their belly... unlike that segment of the fanbase whose fire turned to ashes back in the Dooley Days.
First I thought you were saying that we were two to three coaching changes (head man) before we would be good again. Actually, I think keeping the staff together except one or two that we could improve on makes sense. As far as how close we are, we will just have to disagree with each other. I am pumped that we are at the doorstep and if we can go 8-4, you will see a solid recruiting class this year and progression continuing. Go back and look over the last Dooley team and then look at today. I think you will feel better.
Good post. Understand how you feel. If it turns out to be an 8-4 year it goes as expected.
My concern is that at Tennessee we are tired of meeting lower expectations - at least those of us that go back in time more than we care to say. lol. I still have serious concerns about Butch on game day. He does not adjust his game plan. They do not go for the throat against quality teams. Any winner will tell you to ride the hot hand until it is done, then find others. You probe the weak spots and exploit them consistently; not pretend you can impose your will on a quality team with your original game plan because those other teams will adjust. He needs to learn how to win as much as the players. He doesn't know how yet at this level. I hope he learns soon.
A bunch of idiots in here, if you are complaining with that performance today. My word! Just 2 years ago we were blown out of Tuscaloosa. Just last year, we were down 27-0 with the snap of a finger. We started 2 true FR on the OL in their 1st start, a true FR at Mike, and multiple sophomores. We were missing 6 starters that were slated to start before the season ended. Yet, we went to toe to toe with a very, very good football team, who played a clean game, in their stadium. We continue to progress and get closer and closer. If you can't see that, then there's no hope for you.
I hope this team comes out mad next week, and takes UK to the woodshed.
Here's the thing though. The idea that their is some kind sympathetic link between the attitude of a fan and the performance of a team is magical thinking. Not saying that being a fan in meaningless, sure its a big part of the emotion and pageantry, but lets not overestimate our effect.
No, not CBJ. I'm not convinced that 2-3 coaches need to be replaced. And, I think we need some more Jimmys and Joes. I think your time line is a little further along than mine. Which surprises me because you're an old moran like myself.
Oh, IDT there's any link at all between fanspeak and team performance. I just hate that many UT fans have become so accepting of losing that they celebrate losing "well." We should be pissed about close losses, because they are squandered opportunities. We can be proud of the team, but pissed that we lost. The two aren't mutually exclusive like some seem to think.
