I give an A+ for effort and performance to the D and the D coaching staff. Extremely well done with all of the injuries and inexperience on the road in a most hostile environment. That's the way Volunteers carry the fight.

I give the special teams, except for Medley, a well done as well. They held their own against a really good team. Medley failed. Again. Some people have the killer instinct and love being the man under pressure. Some don't. I haven't seen it yet in him. I really don't understand why Butch would not give another kicker a shot, other than that is what Butch does. He goes with a guy he wants in a role regardless of actual performance until that guy gets injured or graduates.

Once again our OC decided to pass between the hashmarks only in a couple of series the whole game. Those series were successful. You would think you would keep doing that until the other team stopped you consistently. Nope. Other than that it was calling keepers by Dobbs that Bama had well defensed or slow play action or roll out passes with not enough time to find receivers. Hurd and Kamara did their things well. Hurd is simply an outstanding football player. I have no idea why they rarely use quick slants and seams with the quality receivers they have, especially when they know the D will be bringing a strong pass rush. When they do it is successful most of the time. Just not a fan of this offensive system at all.

But the program is getting much better. Hope Butch figures it out.

Yep. No excuse to not beat the hell out of those teams.

No question about it! I'm looking forward to going 5 weeks in a row feeling pretty good on gameday about winning. Should be fun.

I just hope we take today as a positive instead of kinda moping about it in practice and carrying it over to next week. I will say Butch Jones coached teams haven't shown that which is good.

That's 8-4 right? Which is exactly where this team should be. We all hope for overachievement, but 8-4 would make me feel pretty good about 2016.

Especially with Peyton coaching QB and Ter coaching WR :)

I don't but that is why it is so freaking encouraging. It is almost like you are contradicting yourself. We should've won and we are crap because we did not or we are so far away that it will be several years. Which one is it?

Where did I say we are crap? They outperformed my expectations today. I just believewe still don't have the horses to be a serious contender for an SEC championship. I also think we are a coach or three from where we need to be.

Who says I'm off the train? I just don't think we're close to being "back" as you think. If you think we're winning the SEC next year you need to put the Moranic pipe down and step away. Butch has had 2 recruiting classes that were highly ranked. Saban has had 8 top five in a row. We're not in the same galaxy as Bama. Doesn't mean I don't think the Vols are getting there, just don't think we've arrived yet. I think we need some coaching upgrades as well.

We almost beat them at Bama this year. We were ahead with four minutes left. That shows me we are not that far off. Did not say you were off. Said if anyone did get off now that they would regret it. That was a darn good football game and all of these young guys will be older and better next year. Jones and Hall will be guys we have for the next three years and they just did a heck of a job against one of the top D 7 in the country. We have seven guys out for the season who could be starting. I just can't believe you can't see it. They have more talent and depth but not They have a few Seniors and Juniors playing where we have more Freshman and Sophs. If this is not encouraging, then I can't help you. I know you love the Vols but don't be so jaded. We will finish this year and the results will be better than last year and the upward progression will continue next year.

Their CBs aren't better than Martin and Sutton. TKjr is better than any safety on that roster. LBs are better. But healthy our D-line makes more plays. Their O-line isn't a great unit. I can't agree there. You're giving them a lot of credit.

Saban has been quoted that this is his best d line since he's been there so I'll defer to him on that one. Our secondary speaks for itself if you want to look up our passing d rankings.

First I thought you were saying that we were two to three coaching changes (head man) before we would be good again. Actually, I think keeping the staff together except one or two that we could improve on makes sense. As far as how close we are, we will just have to disagree with each other. I am pumped that we are at the doorstep and if we can go 8-4, you will see a solid recruiting class this year and progression continuing. Go back and look over the last Dooley team and then look at today. I think you will feel better.

We had the best LB on the field though. Overall their LB's were better, but JRM was the best player on the field IMO.

And we almost just straight butt kicked them despite all the adversity. This game did nothing less but help the program in many ways. I hate Fine butt but he is right. UT had to come out and show they could compete with the tops teams in the SEC and they did this. Ole Miss won with five TO's and we stood toe to toe without that and with a stupid kicker who couldn't make one FG if his life depended on it. I said many times we may have the best 22 of any team in the SEC but we have lost most of them to injuries and we just beat Georgia and then Bama blew them out and we had the lead with four minutes left and in a hostile road game. Depth is finally about to not be a problem when we will be two deep with experience next year. We go 8-4 this year and the program is still moving upward. Get off the train now and you will regret it.

:salute:

I'm sure he does but people need to get real. As Vol fans we don't like it when the national pundits say we are an 8-4 type squad and a year away, but sometimes we need to listen to them. They have a point. We got beat in part because Chance Hall, a true freshman playing against the best DL in the country, was destroyed on our final offensive play. If Hall were a junior then I'd start to worry. We played our hearts out. You don't win them all. We have never in our history year in and year out won every single game against our biggest rivals. I'm not sure why that is the baseline expectation for people. My baseline expectation is always competitive against Bama, UGA and Florida and it not being a surprise when we take 2 of 3 from them.

Good post. Understand how you feel. If it turns out to be an 8-4 year it goes as expected.

My concern is that at Tennessee we are tired of meeting lower expectations - at least those of us that go back in time more than we care to say. lol. I still have serious concerns about Butch on game day. He does not adjust his game plan. They do not go for the throat against quality teams. Any winner will tell you to ride the hot hand until it is done, then find others. You probe the weak spots and exploit them consistently; not pretend you can impose your will on a quality team with your original game plan because those other teams will adjust. He needs to learn how to win as much as the players. He doesn't know how yet at this level. I hope he learns soon.

Nick Saban has never once lowered his expectations to being competitive against a rival. He doesn't celebrate being close. He finds a close loss more frustrating than any other loss, because that means his team let an opportunity get away.

Saban expects to win, he demands it and he's pissed as hell after a loss. He hates to lose. He doesn't excuse it. He doesn't rationalize it. He doesn't think being close is any sort of victory.

And that's exactly why he wins and that's how he has developed a championship program at two schools. I hope to hell our players have that mentality and not the "oh, well, we tried, we'll get 'em next year when we're better" mentality. And I think our players do. I think they're pissed as hell they lost, and I don't think being "close" is any consolation at all. I'm glad they have that fire in their belly... unlike that segment of the fanbase whose fire turned to ashes back in the Dooley Days.

This x1000. What did yall think of Martin? Thought he played well and an upgrade over Mosely. Bama never hit the big pass play. A lot of credit to our d line too.

Looked like an improvement. If he doesn't slip on that completion to Stewart I think UT wins, because he had good position.

Thought we had them the whole time. Never game until the fumble.

This has just been a gut punch of a season.

But we are close. We are growing.
