I think people are underrating Georgia this year like they did Florida last year because of the coaching change.

Georgia still has a ton of talent. I think they go 10-2. At worst 9-3. No way they lose to UNC. I also think Florida struggles this year like we thought they would last year.

Florida didn't get underrated last year; they got lucky. I agree on UGA's talent though. It's just a matter of how prepared Smart really is for that job. If he's legitimately ready and makes a relatively smooth transition, I think it comes down to our game against them in Athens for the East. If Smart is in over head, well, we'll just have a lot fun laughing at them.

We can debate it all summer (and probably will), but I don't think there is any way we can get a sense of what that team will be until we start playing football for real in September.

UF was a solid team pre-Grier suspension. Dismantling OM like they did isn't getting lucky. They likely beat LSU with Grier and the UGA game would've looked a lot different.

Seriously though if all things are equal, we really should replace Mahoney with a full time QB coach and let Debord focus on the OL.

I think this offseason we had our hands tied in that a bit since QB coaches are often OCs or have another title tied to their name like passing game coordinator. And there are a lot of strong opinions about that spot in our offense right now.

I agree. I'm excited to see UGA have the combination of a relatively tough schedule and a HC with no experience at that position, but it's too early to say whether he'll be any good or not.

They do have the talent to be a good team (if Chubb can come back 100% at least).

I get to hear some idiotic comments on here, but this one might take the entire cake. Do you even know the names of some of Saban's assistants, other than former UT great,Derek Dooley? Ever heard of Jimbo Fisher, Jim McElwain, Mark Dantonio, or Josh Daniels? The only bad seed seems to be your guy Dooley. The jury's still out on Will Muschamp. And I'd take Smart over Jones ANY DAY. You all would too.

We likely could have had either Smart or Muschamp when we hired Butch. Fortunately, Dave Hart was smarter than that. Georgia ran off a proven coach because they panicked an unproven head coach might go elsewhere.

Only 1 NC under Bryant is debated; 1973. Bama went 11-0 in the regular season and was named NC's. Then lost their bowl game, so polls changed in 1974 to awarding the NC after bowl games. The debated ones are pre-1940 under Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade.

That's incorrect. 1964 and 1978 are controversial as well.

Meh, they also squeaked out several close wins against pretty crappy teams: Eastern Carolina (31-24 with Greir), UK (14-9, also with Greir), Vandy (9-7), and they needed a lot help from the officials to beat Florida Atlantic in overtime 20-14, not to mention their game against us (I'm not counting us as a crappy team). There was a lot of luck in there that helped propel a mediocre FL team to 10 wins and a divisional championship.

You made a good point until your last comment. Given what we know now, I don't think anyone here would take Smart over Jones. Moreover, it's not like Smart is taking over a depleted, under-talented roster at UGA. The UT football program, at the time of Jones' appointment, was also struggling with several significant issues. Jones wasn't the first guy in the list, but I wouldn't trade him for many in the country.

I probably should have stopped while I was ahead.:) My point is that, by all indications, Kirby Smart has all of the tools necessary to be an effective head coach. There certainly are no guarantees but, contrary to some of the comments made here, he's a darn good hire for UGA. To say that CNS has been running Bama's D and Smart was just a figurehead, is laughable.

What the non-informed don't realize is that Spurrier's leaving UCSe was the nail in Richt's coffin. Smart was on everybody's wish list, as he should have been, including USCe. McGarity had to pull the trigger. Richt was not going to get it done and it was now or never for Smart.

I think most on this board, at least those who have CFB knowledge, know that Smart is a good hire for UGA. Just look at the strategic hires that he's made and the recruiting class that he kept together, in spite of coming late after Bama's NC.

I'm glad he's here. And I think I'll be more glad as time passes.

Who has better talent? And we're going to maul y'all between and through the hedges. Shoop is going to dismantle Chaney.

Shoop kinda has a history of doing that. Also with Cheney, I just can't see the run game UGA has been known for happening. He was pass happy here, pass happy at Ark, and pass happy at Pitt. I'm not sure how that'll work out and even if Kirby manages to rein him in it will take a while to establish an offensive identity.

Nope. Chump couldn't win at Florida and buck tooth won't either.

Dooley sucked, chump is bad, dantonio can't beat sec teams and Daniels was with saban for one year and coaches with the patriots who just happen to be one of the best teams ever and its not all bc of him, maybe 10% if that. Jimbo is the only one who has been good and he coaches at FSU(the premier team in the ACC) so ur argument has no legs. Smart may be good or bad but you have no stats/history to prove smart is even half the coach butch is right now. Good luck this year, shoop took Chaney behind the woodshed with candy talent, I can't wait to see him destroy him in athens. Historically uga has been maybe second best and only beat ut when ut was down, those days are now behind us so have fun at the outback/citrus bowl every year
