Um...... Mark Richt orchestrated a run in college football that will more than likely never be topped. as a OC at FSU he had a top 5 offense 5 out of 7 years!!! He is an offensive genius who coached two QB's to two heismans and two titles. Bobby still says he's one of the only men he trusts to run an offense with none of his guidance. His downfall was handing the reigns over to someone else when he was HC. Your "hobnail boot", Richts play calls, your dream season where you lost one game all year, Richt's calls. Your best years statistically speaking were when he was your OC and HC. You say he was a "mediocre" coach when he was hired literally 76 hours after being fired. No one came after Phil when he was fired, that says a lot.
But I guess UGA fans are too stuck up to realize what they had in a coach... Ask FSU fans how worried they are that Richt is calling plays in Miami!
What amuses me is the fact that, just a few months ago, Vol fans on this forum were saying that they sure hoped UGA kept Richt, because they weren't impressed by his HCing. Now you're saying that we should have not fired him because he was so awesome. Can't have it both ways. He was hired by MIAMI, his alma mater. If Derrick Dooley had matriculated there they would have hired him. Miami is not a dream job at present. I know Mark Richt personally and he is a great man and a strong Christian. But his coaching style is too laid back to be ultimately successful in the SEC.
I've stirred up quite a hornets nest amongst some of you Vols. I probably should have been a little less confrontational, but we all love our own program and get a little miffed when others talk disrespectfully about our school. I've seen some fairly valid arguments on this thread, and I've seen some pretty boneheaded comments. One poster suggested that Mark Dantonio wasn't a good protege of Saban. I got a good chuckle out of that one. I've heard that there's no way Kirby Smart will be successful at UGA because he was just a puppet of Saban. Saban himself has gone to great lengths to give Smart much of the credit for taking over Bama's defense and handling much of the decision making. I think the moves that Smart has made thus far are born out of intelligent planning. And I think he'll be very successful in the SEC due to his qualifications. All of that remains to be seen, but there's a buzz in Athens that I haven't seen in years.
I'm going to be a good visitor of this board, as I have since '08, and not take any pokes at UT. I just want to talk about the best game in the world with fans of schools other than my own.
I believe Georgia should be a top 10 job.
Problem is everyone knows it but Georgia. They could have and should have went after a Dabo or Dantonio. Instead, they went with a guy that is unproven. A guy that we flat out had a meltdown when his name was floated after Dooley. If you will remember Dave Hart had to address it in an interview because of the meltdown. He said the hire will have HC experience to calm the masses.
He may be great. He may be a huge waste of time. Pretty big gamble to me seeing how the traditional powers in the East are on the verge of being great again.

Neither your former coach or current coach put fear into the Vols. Hell you've got our hand me down as an OC. Looks like FAIL is written all over the hire.
We all wanted Richt to stay because we matched up well with his style and could beat him. Successful enough to keep his job, yet vulnerable enough for us to take over the series.
Georgia could've done so much better than Smart. A proven and tested head coach could've taken it to unseen heights.
And one more thing. This is a Tennessee board. If you don't like the opinions and responses you're getting, feel free to take the rest of your yapping trolls with you and start your own website.
I don't recall bringing up any fear factor. Some of you keep that subject going. Makes me wonder. Why do you say the hire has FAIL written all over it? Give me some facts. And we've already gone over the "Saban assistants" thing. Tell me a head coach in all of CFB who has more successful former assistants.
