I know many of you don't venture to the football forum, but I just wrote up a short essay on Derek Barnett and wanted some less crazy people to read it as well and see what I was able to find out about him historically.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to read it. But any analysis probably doesn't even consider that Barnett may be the most held player that I have ever seen in my 25 years of watching UT football. Don't think they keep a stat for "times holding should have been called." Kid is great, and his presence would be even bigger if the officials called it.

I mentioned it and double/triple teams in passing, but unfortunately it's not something to measure really. Now, NFL scouts notice it for sure. But there's almost no way to break it down for the college game, and I would wager that every really good/great DE gets held more than every other position. I say that from being a former Tight End and Full back myself and playing college ball. The best and most athletic D ends are harder to block than any other position, by far.

A guy like Barnett legitimately might get held every play outside of plays where the ball is being run to the other side.

Unfortunately, officials do not call offensive holding unless a takedown is witnessed. This is contrary to the rules of the game, but it is reality. The emphasis in the last 40 years has been to allow whatever yields the most offense. This is why so many high scoring games.

I've never seen a player get held like Barnett.

I find it refreshing that a kid that could be high level isn't looking to make it big but wants to lead a simple life and teach kids to play the game. The impact he can make on them one on one in a personal nature is so much more than he can by them seeing him play for UT. Too many young people get so wrapped up in sports they can't handle it when it's taken away from them. He seems to have a great head on his shoulders. Congratulations Zach.

I have this fear that by not leaving life will keep him from ever being able to fulfill that goal

I hope I'm wrong

FAILURE.

Anything short of a national title is unacceptable.

That's the standard this program should be held to. I hate this happiness with being okay.

You were one of the dumbasses that bought into the media overhype of this team going into last year weren't you? 8 or 9 wins was the goal last year. 10 or 11 is the goal this year. Shut up with that garbage if we don't make the national championship it's a failure. It's not. This was always suppose to be the year that we were suppose to contend for an SEC championship...not last year.

I really can't stand the "holier than you" attitude you have. Like your words are the gospel and we are suppose to bow in your presence. You're just another armchair dumbass.

Finally. They are starting to recognize Nashville is a great hockey market. Now if we could just start developing some young talent in youth leagues...

You should get out more. There are some very good young players all over Nashville. The Midget leagues are loaded now more than ever and the kids behind them are getting better all the time.

Youth hockey in the South? :eek:lol:

I think its a great idea but football and baseball will always be tops down here. Outside of the upper Midwest and the north east, youth hockey isn't all that big. I grew up playing in Wisconsin, I love the sport but I just don't see too many kids being that interested. Need to have more indoor ice rinks to generate interest first, IMO.

You should get out more too :)

Not as many play Hockey as they do the other sports. Cost/easy acces etc will always hurt Hockey but there are hundreds of kids playing around Nashville now. Ford has a great program to get kids into it for free to start.

Would love to get to Nashville. I live in the Hattiesburg Area in southern Mississippi.

Ahh yea I didn't catch that earlier I was waaaay behind in the thread.

Nashville is definitely becoming a hockey town. It helps when the Preds do well and the Titans stink.

If not for the cost to play and lack of ice I think hockey would be even bigger among kids, especially the young ones. My son hated baseball/tball because it was too boring. Soccer was ok but after his first Preds game he was done, hockey it was, and goodbye to our savings. :(

Have you been watching the NFL draft? UCLA lost a ton of guys this year. They'll have to replace nearly everyone on offense outside Rosen and their two best players on defense.

I think they take a step back. A&M wins easy like they did versus Arizona State.

I guarantee you I followed the draft more than you did. They lost a lot but have talent returning.

Can you get here Monday?

Y'all are about an 8 hr drive. I probably won't be up in Tennessee until football season, Lord willing. Got to pray I can take time off and the trainers I support don't cause any crises before I take vacation. Summer is our busy season. Units need IEDs during summer training and I more or less the conductor/ coordinator for their training.

No. The goal was 10 wins last year. And if not for some epic collapses we would've easily achieved it.

Do you deny this team has the TALENT to win it all? Because unless you think we lack the TALENT, winning it all should be the goal.

We have the players. We have the coaches. We have the schedule. The goal this year is a SEC and national championship. We can't choke away games once again.

I went to the Titans Caravan tonight and Justin Hunter was one of the players there- I thanked him for what he did at UT and he said he did all he could - probably didn't want to say what a doofus he unfortunately had for a coach at that time, but he was super nice. Would have been great to see what might have been if he hadn't been injured.

10 wins was not the expectation last year.

A big difference between 9 and 10 win expectations last year was that some people expected to lose to UF. Many of these same people will expect to lose to UF again this year and go 10-2 instead of 11-1.
