Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXV

Clemson fans down here in SC say they have heard their staff is using the law suit, combined with the failure to post any NFL draft picks, against TN to target the best recruits in the state. Kind of reverse raiding TN like we used to raid the state of SC in the 90's. But as someone said earlier, we win 10+ in 2016, and resolve this suit, and this class turns around in a hurry.

Failure to have NFL picks? Butch is going into his 4th year, and a few of his highly talented players in his first year decided to return to school (but would have been drafted). That "theme" is about to end in a huge way. It's all about timing.

Just getting in their shots while they can.

Approximately 97% of civil lawsuits settle pre-trial-- a year or two after filing. Discovery is a long, profitable process. UT was never going to settle this suit upfront... but the insurance carriers will almost certainly open settlement negotiations before trial.

Other teams will always negative recruit against us, and they'll use whatever they can. The media has already milked this lawsuit dry. The shock value is gone, it's old news and it's a money grab, not a criminal matter. Recruits and their families know this and understand that it won't impact the team or current players. If it's turning recruits away, those recruits probably didn't really want to come to UT.

I've believed in CBJ - that he wants to be here and that he plans to be here for a long time. If it's true that he's ready to jump to the NFL if given a chance, because the lawsuit is making things tough, I'll feel betrayed. I don't want to feel betrayed so I'll just continue to believe he's here because he wants to be; he plans on building something special here; and he isn't going to let anything stand in his way.

We all get a bit down sometimes. I'll keep my orange glasses on.

I want to beat our rivals, end the streaks and be the team that nobody wants to play-- the team that can upset anybody's season. I want to sweep the East, go to ATL, win the SEC and see how far confidence, talent and determination can take us. We do that, and we'll have more recruits than we have spots.

This year is the turning point in Vol football in one way or another.

Will we meet expectations and become a perennial powerhouse and the next school everyone wants to join? Will we again be let down by another poor coaching performance and have to start over?

FIND OUT ON THE NEXT SEASON OF NCAA FOOTBALL

Like sand through an hour glass.... These are the days of our Vols

I think we will get the Florida monkey off our back this year and shake off most of our demons, but there's definitely at least one gut punch loss lurking on the schedule.

Prediction:

We miss on a ton of instate talent this year, but Butch kills out of state recuiting, and we still finish top 5 in recruiting rankings.

In spite of this VN still cries, because of instate recruiting expectations for 2017, and certain names signed elsewhere

I'm bracing myself for this, and preparing to be happy

Most recent Hubbs quote re:Title IX lawsuit:

Fortenberry elaborated on this a while back and said that other schools are using it to negative recruit against us, but once the staff gets them and their families on campus, they can clear things up pretty quickly.

Vq might as well be the staffs PR directors. Of course they are going to say this

I'm sorry but there is no way Jones goes to the NFL or even has the offers. I think everything he does is calculated. I think that he knows he has a very good team on his hands. Why let Shoop make the comment about 11 wins? What does floating this out there do? It puts pressure on the admin should we win 11 or 12 games to pay him even more. If we win an SEC title I'm all for paying him more. We won't have to worry about recruiting if the results show on the field.

As for the lawsuit, I deal with them everyday and some you do settle just to make them go away. Others you fight but no way was UT ever going to settle this up front and I think most of us can agree Butch is not an idiot and would certainly understand this. Things get floated by agents for negotiations sake. How many jobs has Nick Saban been ready to take? I mean his wife has been working with a realtor in Dallas, Austin, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Southern Cal, etc etc

Because VQ is known for their constant sunshine pumping, right?

The truth is somewhere in between his comment and yours. I don't think anyone can truly state that Hubbs has full autonomy in what and how he reports but I think his opine concerning how much of an impact has had on recruiting is closer to the truth than Larry's. I simply do not buy that 16-18 year old football recruits keep up with it, much less actually allow it to be a factor in where they play football for the next 3-5 years.

Wins, staff, depth at their respective positions, overall talent on the team, facilities, national exposure, ability to translate to the NFL...these are all more important to the lion's share of recruits. It's a factor for some but not many, I'd wager.
