Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXVI

I should have defined my question a little more clearly. When I said meaningful snaps, that doesn't include 4th quarter mop-up duty.

I meant series-to-series QB changes in the middle of the game. I've never seen that scenario work very well --- no wait --- the Florida combination of Tebow and Leak was damn effective. But otherwise, I can think of far more failures than successes.

If Dobbs is still a liability in the downfield passing game, I could see some gain in getting the #2 QB prepared for next year AND providing a spark to the offense.

I knew what you meant. No way Dobbs comes out unless he is injured. I think the talk about his passing deficiencies is overblown. It's hard to complete deep passes when your receivers can get off press at the LOS. All need to improve, not just Dobbs. If Malone and Williams step up this year I believe the passing game will take a big step

Everything factors in. The net result is other schools are using Malone's lack of performance against CBJ and UT. That narrative is very effective in convincing recruits that their talents will be more successfully developed and used elsewhere.

I do think a platoon rotation is not all that appealing to elite WRs. They want to be on the field making plays, not watching from the sidelines half the game.

Agreed. Also don't wanna spend all game blocking and not get passes thrown their way. I think next year the receivers will get many more attempts whether it's Dormady or JG. I had thought next year would be Dormady's but sounds like JG is legit and already giving QD all he wants for the backup job and he's only been on campus a few months. We haven't had a good passing QB since Bray which is no coincidence that was the last time we had a WR go in the first round. Not sure we have even had a WR drafted since Worley and Dobb's have been QB. Just not sure Josh can be a consistent and accurate passer. Hope I'm wrong and I think not having a true QB developer hurts also. If he wasn't going to hire an OC that was a legitimate QB coach he should have given Debord full reins over the OLine which he has really helped improve and replace Mahoney with an experienced QB Coach that could also recruit. Butch missed his chance to fully upgrade the coaching staff and give the players the coaching they deserve.

Not sure Jones ever sees the field. Especially if JG is already pushing Dormady for #2. That was shocking to hear I really thought there was no chance JG wouldn't redshirt.

I don't see any way JG doesn't redshirt unless Dobbs gets hurt. No way they burn his shirt just to play garbage time. I bet we'll see a few snaps of Jones against teams like Ohio and TT

It would shock me too but it was surprising to see the VQ guys say JG was giving Dormady a real battle for 2. If they RS JG I can see Jones maybe getting a few snaps. With JG coming in this summer I just assumed he was a lock to RS and wouldn't even be in the #2 QB discussion. Sounds like we may have something special in JG and he is supposedly the perfect QB for our offense even more than Dobb's.

He'll redshirt. No need to burn it for garbage minutes. And it would be nice for him to be able to develop for a year without getting hurt...like his last two seasons of high school.

I agree and hope he is able to. No reason for him to burn a RS unless Dobb's goes down then if he is the best option for us to win then do it.

Butch announces JG #2 before the season starts and it's likely at least Dormady walks. In fact Jones may walk right behind him out the door. IMO, Butch isn't doing it.

If Jarrett deserves it, give it to him.
Imagine losing the team bc you chose a veteran back up over someone who actually beat him out

Clearly you think this is a receiver issue and not a QB or system issue. I disagree. I think the fact we rarely even *tried* to throw downfield is an indictment on Dobbs or the play calling, not the receivers.

I went to the Kentucky game in Lexington and was thrilled to see Malone catch the 75 yard pass from Dobbs. But that wasn't the only time Malone was open that game. They never even tried to throw the ball downfield again. Other than the one long play to Malone, Dobbs was 15 for 25 for 158 yards. That's a 60% completion percentage but only 6 yards per attempt --- low by anybody's standards and a sign we didn't complete many balls downfield. The next longest pass play was the 37 yard touchdown pass to Hurd and that was a designed screen. Everything else was 16 yards or shorter.

The pass to Malone in the Kentucky game was the longest pass play of the year. The next longest pass? The 49 yard bomb from Dormady to Williams in the Western Carolina game. Draw your own conclusions.

I tend to agree. I don't know why anyone would leave before spring anyway to atleast compete for the starting job. Then if they don't like the results then transfer if it's what they want.

JG is going to be incredible here, IMO. I really think he will put up Deshaun Watson style numbers in this offense.

I thought I remember reading after the fact that he had a broken hand or something like that during his freshman year. Does that ring a bell to anyone or am I just making stuff up in my brain movies?

He did. Everyone seems to forget that.

Only way #2 gets any meaningful reps is if Dobbs goes down. If I'm Butch I keep the boat from rocking for now. JG as a RS is fine. Let the QB battle play out next year. Don't force transfers now. God forbid Dobbs goes down, then reevaluate if JG redshirts or he's the guy.

Dobbs gets hurt and you're right...put the best guy out there.
