Done correctly, yoga is one of the truly elite forms of stretching. Unlike the stretches that most do (only focuses on one muscle or muscle group), yoga may stretch up to 5-6 different groups simultaneously. A 30 minute yoga program can be the equivalent of about 2 1/2 of regular stretching.
Unfortunately, many think yoga is at least partly religious (Hinduism) . That is where the opposition usually comes from. Many yoga instructors preach harmony with the universe and body/mind/soul. The true secret to success in yoga is really very simple...focus on slow steady controlled breathing. If done properly, it truly decreases muscle and body tension. Thus leading to quicker results in the muscle lengthening process. (And no, your johnson is not a muscle)

The danger of Yoga that I've noticed is some people literally turn it into a religion. I love yoga and I believe it helps me in my Christian faith by providing an exercise of peacefulness and meditation along with the physical benefits, but I prefer to keep it in its proper place.

I have never been in better shape than when I did p90x and the Yoga was my favorite workout. It was definitely the hardest by far as well.
As far as the religious aspect I routinely in my line of work at the time had Christian friends questioning the yoga training. I normally responded with "its a workout lets be serious" but if it was pushed I did advise people that David in the Psalms repeatedly used the phrase "Selah" which one translations equates to "stop and meditate." That normally ended the questions.
