JMO, as well as a few that have shared this sentiment, but I don't see any way Johnson plays this year. At least not before the BYE. He's not received any coaching from Strip, he missed all of Fall Camp, he hasn't been able to work out with the team, and at this point there are probably 6-7 guys ahead of him on the depth chart at DT (McKenzie, O'Brien, Vickers, Tuttle, Kongbo, Butcher, maybe even Bain). Now if some injuries happen in that DT position group, maybe he's ready for the 2nd half of the season, but I'd bet the plan if he's reinstated soon is for him to redshirt and be ready to contribute for 2017 & 2018. Again, JMO & GBO.

I get it and agree but if they would bring him back now then he could. Also, I don't think Butcher has practiced one time.

Depth at DT is the main issue. A healthy Tuttle changes the complexion at DT for me. McKenzie is nearly a sure starter. O'Brien and Vickers bring experience and are very serviceable. Beyond that, we don't have much. It's easy to understand why Kongbo is getting work inside. I wonder how much we'll see of Butcher and Picou?

DT will be fine.

I don't know why there's this obsession that we need to be 8 deep or something at DT.

It would be a luxury and is ideal depth, but it's certainly possible to make it through an entire season with only a 4-man rotation at DT if we don't have major injuries. And even without Tuttle, we have at least 5 guys in KMack, Vickers, O'Brien, Picou, and Kongbo.

Once Tuttle is back we are legitimately 6 deep. If/when Johnson gets reinstated, he's the emergency 7th DT. Then there's Paul Bain who is perhaps a little better than the average walk-on DT.

Plus we have guys who will slide in the middle on 3rd down passing situations. Plenty of bodies to go around in the middle.

It's not the numbers. It's the quality.

We were not nearly good enough at defensive tackle last year. I like Kmac and Danny O for sure. Vickers is quality. Tuttle is on the shelf. Picou is an unknown and then we have ends we are sliding over.

Love how everyone is talking about how high our talent level is across the board finally with depth to boot, sports writers are speculating and applauding Butch for his ability to build depth/talent, even one guy comparing it to LSU and Bamma, but we have one 4-6 week injury on the O line and all of a sudden everyone is arguing about depth issues on the O and D lines.... I swear if someone was handing out $10 bills on here, half of you would +itch and moan about why it wasn't $20's...... We are in way better shape coming into this season than we have been for years, we will be Okay. Time for Jack J and/or others to step up for a while...

3 deep at DT is basically as thin as you can possibly be at DT (1 sub), at a position where guys aren't exactly leading the team in stamina. The guys behind Vickers are extremely unproven and haven't played any meaningful snaps in this league. 4 deep is fine, which is why having a proven starter back like Tuttle makes a huge difference.

If it's just a meniscectomy, he could be ready to go in 2 weeks. 4-6 weeks seems to be a safe range. If they needed him earlier, he could get back earlier

Yet we won 9 games and should have won 2 more with less than we have this year....sooooo

Agreed. We'll see an early rotation of the main 3 of KMack, Vickers, and O'Brien, with Kongbo and Picou getting work in spots. As they acclimate, Tuttle should return around the Ohio game.

By the meaningful stretch of games, we'll be 6 deep at DT with 4 experienced and talented guys rotating and 2 quality backups in Kongbo and Picou.

I'm actually more concerned with our LB depth.

Behind Kirkland and JRM, a lot of unknowns there.

We will be fine at DT.

Less than we have this year??? Arguably our best DT is working his way back from a nasty injury and we lost a DT to graduation. The lone DT we signed that could contribute this season is still suspended.

Not sure what you are getting at.

If we had elite SEC DT depth then we would have beaten Oklahoma and Florida. Both QB's were able to step up into the pocket and elude pressure.

We also would have beat OU and UF with more aggressive offensive playcalling, a healthy Maggitt/Gaulden, and a better DC on the sidelines (and specifically for OU - starting Kirkland over Jumper). Can't blame it all on lack of DT depth. All teams are tired late in the 4th quarter.

Ok? We still weren't good at DT.
