After John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln he JUMPED to the stage below to make his getaway. He JUMPED. He was a JUMPER. I think I've proven my point here.

JRM NEEDS to be at will because he has freedom to play the whole field, because of his speed, but at Mike he won't have that freedom. His first priority will be the middle and won't be able to react fast enough if the rb bounces the run to the outside. I'm with the coaches on the defense being in position because more plays are made from the defense being out of position. It doesn't matter how athletic our defense is if they aren't in position to make a play then they will get shredded.

Wonder if Bates is ever gonna get healthy enough to get on the field? Never hear one word about him.

I have no idea how healthy he is, but he participated in every game last year and both games this year. Again, I don't know how much, but he was out there (maybe just special teams, not sure).

How dare you!

It's almost as if coaches have reasons for things.

While fans may differ, it amazes me how sure some fans are to their opinions when they are working on about 90% less information. It doesn't make the fan wrong. It just decreases that likelihood in my opinion.

I find it difficult to believe Jumper and DKjr are the only LBs capable of getting the team lined up.

This.

Has major red flags all over it. Somebody definitely dropped the ball. Don't know whether it's on the coaches, LBs or both but it's severely disappointing to be where we are on this. Respect Jumper for what he's given to UT but sadly he just isn't cutting it. Glad he can "read" a defense but when plays breakdown you need athletic ability which is his deficiency. He will cost us greatly if another alternative is not found before Kirkland returns.

Get well quickly DKJr!!!

AJ played the middle and made almost every tackle it seemed

Haha. Fair point. But good thing we have a senior all-SEC type LB who can slide to middle spot and quarterback this defense.

But nah, that would make too much sense

Coaches will find an answer. People are freaking out over this depth chart. All they did was scratch DK amd leave MLB position as is.

I have seen Butch play kids who weren't the best but I think he has learned from that. We've got til 9/24 to find the best solution.

I'm sure they aren't, but they are probably the best two at it. There are varying degrees of ability. You have to weigh Jumper's high ability to call the right play against another player's higher athletic ability. This is why there is never one right answer.

As Rishvol said, the moves a coach makes may strengthen one area and weaken another. As a coach, you have to decide where you want to put your stat points when you're building your starting set. Like the o-line, they may move folks around during practices and games to see how they respond.

Another good thing that could come from this is that adversity can pull the potential out of people. Maybe one of those backups gets his head on straighter and mans up better now that his number might get called when it matters most.

Well I guess we will see how it will play out at MLB. I mean what else can we do? All the speculation is corrosive. Though I know the coaching staff takes the suggestions of some on here more seriously than others when they drop into the VN recruiting forum for pointers.
