Obviously we all have great affection for Fulmer, but Butch is getting criticized for the very same thing that probably led to Fulmer's downfall- surrounding themselves with familiar faces. I do think Fulmer would be another great football person to help Butch, but I am not sure he would push him to think outside the box. To me, the answer would be to hire Blackburn as AD and ask Fulmer if he wants to be #2. Pay both of them good money if they agree to coexist.

Agree with this approach. Blackburn as number 1 with Fulmer in an official advisory role.

Fulmer to AD?

"Hearing similar things today. How much traction? Not sure. But it doesn't seem to be the "no" that it was a couple of months ago. Compromise to DB. Fulmer is a Tennessee guy which I think is important. Could he get Blackburn to come with him as his number two.

Remember this, Fulmer and DiPeitro have worked together a lot the last year in fundraising so they know each other well."

Would be fine with Fulmer

Was really hoping for some coaching news today. Less than a month before signing day and it's so quiet. Need some news

Russell Wilson helping my theory that overpaying for a QB will ruin your team.

The Seahawks wouldn't even be in the playoffs this year without Wilson. Their OL is absolutely horrible and most QBs in the league wouldn't have been able to evade the pressure that is coming his way. His elite scrambling skills has got them this far.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you are trying to say though. Overpaying for an average QB is where you can definitely ruin a team.

Their OL wouldn't be horrible if they didn't overpay for Wilson. They had to let go 2 pro bowler OL to afford Russell's 20M/year.

Yeah I see your point. It's a tough business. Pro Bowl OL are very valuable, tough to give up. But an above average QB in the NFL is even more valuable. This is why building through the draft is so important.

Ya, it's darned if you do darned if you don't. But I think an average qb with an awesome ol is preferable to a great qb with a horrible OL

Interesting topic. I heard Luginbill on the first show Friday telling the audience how they select five stars. He said your position matters and ranks them this way:

OT
DT
DE
QB
CB

Everyone else

Yeah and that's not wrong. Anyone that believes that can point to the cowboys this year and can justify that statement in my eyes. Dak has been very impressive but most people will point to the OL and Zeke.

At the same time though if you get an above average to elite QB you pay up IMO. The really good ones can negate spotty OL play and are very rare. Wilson isn't Brady or Manning but his scrambling gives your team a chance no matter how bad the OL is.

Does anyone remember eazyTD popping in a long time ago when the picture surfaced of Fulmer and Majors shaking hands? If you remember, he said the way is being paved for Fulmer to AD. I find that very interesting now in light of this info.

Also worth pointing out in the Titans' case to a lesser extent.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Mariota took such a big step forward at the same time the Titans' OL (and RBs too, I guess) became one of the better units in the NFL.

Why would DB come back to UT to play second fiddle especially after he was told to go get experience (did and did well) and has been all but given the job for two months despite the few against him? If it's not him now it never will be.

I like Fulmer and always have but not sure this is a fit. Is he willing to be fired again if it goes poorly? The expectations are higher in today's sports world then in 2007 and the fans are less forgiving.

Maybe the promise to DB will be that he will be the successor to Fulmer, when Fulmer chooses to retire?
