Every coach that bothers to speak to a local group like that says similar things before a season starts. Yet he gets portrayed as the only one weak and stupid enough to do it.

Not really, though.

The only person has to blame for the perception he has of being thin skinned is himself.

i disagree. He has has to combat dumbassery from Knox media and this fan base. The whining is coming from those sources ten billion times more than Butch. For example, all summer the media and fan base harp on the champions of life thing, run it into the ground and beat it, even though it is not a bad statement in context but when Butch says ONE THING about said media, he's thinned skinned. The media and fanbase are a bunch of whiney millennial snowflakes and Butch called them out for it one time and they are now calling him one. It's childish, it's pathetic and these media members and fans need to act like ****ing adults for once and quit sensationalizing every thing he says knowingly out of context

What is your basis for saying "Not really, though"?

Have I missed the dozens of articles about other coaches and what they said to the local Ruritans or at the Moose lodge?

(Edit to add: Not implying they don't speak to them. Just that what they say in that environment isn't typically fodder for media)

Upset? The physical talent is elite...... We should have a chance to win every game depending on QB play and LB play.

I think if we beat LSU, Bama or even UGA it would be considered an upset in the eyes of the national media, which is my point, but I tend to agree with you.

The journalist get paid by a company to cover this business. All of the media come to your field to ask you questions. If they don't agree with some things that are reported (the Haney article/headline) then you have the right to not offer anymore information. You don't think that wasn't used against us in recruiting? I mean for God's sake there were 15 unnamed "sources" and the only one to put a name on their statement was Hood. His just so happened to be the only positive thing in the article.

Nothing about propaganda. If you're bad for business, you're bad for business. TN makes the calls, just as every other school has as well. I'm sure Brice isn't the only $hit stirrer to get blackballed in the sec.

I know Spurrier blackballed at least one local reporter while at SCjr.

I think skill position wise we are right there with everyone, secondary should be out biggest strength imo. Based on the spring practice and about 3/4 of the fall practice I've seen, offensive line really really scares me. Yes it's true we have depth, but if there aren't 5 that can form a good unit then what does it matter. We need trey smith to be beyond as good as advertised. Dobbs bailed us out of so many sacks, busted plays, etc last year. I don't think we get 1/2 of that this year with QD or JG.

So you agree with me- striking a balance. Great. My point was that if a journalist isn't going to put something of value in his reporting, he's not going to have much of an audience. For football, sometimes that means reporting injuries and being negative. It doesn't mean he's disrespecting the university, as Mr. Melodrama would put it. He's serving his audience.

But I don't think you have your story straight with regard to Brice waving the flag for the Haney article. He got burned, and was bitter about his access. I get it, and don't blame him for it.

Well, there wasn't a balance with the Haney article. It was overboard, and the school had the right to react to it. Not sure how I exactly made your point because you don't agree with that.

Brice was working for the same group. Tough for him, but that happens, and I see no issue with it.

This is why I say we have the best LB corp in the country. Studs all over the place.

Darrin Kirkland Jr.
Daniel Bituli
Austin Smith
Quart'e Sapp

That's 4 starting NFL linebackers right there.

Dude just stfu with the "talent evaluation" bs.

He's made some statements to protect his players and the local media and 10% of the fanbase have vilified him for it by purposely taking his statements out of context. And the national media has picked up on those local stories and ran with them. I imagine from Butch's point of you it is a bit baffling. Recruiting has picked up greatly under Butch; he has UT going to bowls again, and winning bowls; the team's APR is the highest it is ever been; he is mostly bringing in high character kids who are great ambassador's for the school; he has UT back in the top 25 again and in the conversation. But yet he is referred to in the media as Coach Crewcut and mocked.

No, they weren't twisted...in the article.

The reaction by other media is where things go off the rails. What he said to a frigging Rotary club is absolutely normal. Every coach that bothers to speak to a local group like that says similar things before a season starts. Yet he gets portrayed as the only one weak and stupid enough to do it.

The sad thing is what he said is the truth.

Hyperbole.

Did you think the recent 247 article about his speech was unfair or his words were twisted?

My only point is that he needs to learn to just leave it alone sometimes and look forward, not backward.

I think everything he says or doesn't say gets twisted by a large portion of the media. What he said is absolute truth.

If EVERY coach, as you said, used their opportunities speaking at local establishments to sound off on their media coverage, we'd be hearing a lot more about it.

Knoxville media isn't the only place where reporters like to strike their own ego or where they take offense to assertions of unfairness.

One thing?

Does your memory not go back far enough to remember Butch's "pocket list?" Or how his first three years here he would always lament the media picking UT "last in the east" (which was never true, but we gave him the benefit of the doubt at the time).

Look, I'll admit that vol Twitter and the media have been unfair to Butch at times. But the guy has also opened himself up to a lot of criticism at the same time.

What media articles call him coach crewcut?

The media has the opportunity to pick and choose what they publish from the things Butch says publicly. They would be attacking him even more if the decided to go quiet. They want to stir up controversy for more attention.

I hope this is the year he can shove it up their arses by winning big and publicly telling them not to bother being bandwagon supporters after the season. IMO he should then go Belichick on them and just smile all the time with one word/sentence answers to questions. We can get the real information on what is going on from Volquest and other VFL insiders.

So from reading all of this media diatribe, I have deduced that McGees Pub is haney and Darth is Brice...

Agree the physical talent it there.... now let's see if it was/is developed by the coaching staff to excel on the field. Some folks on here keep claiming our O line is deep and talented but aren't these basically the exact same guys besides Trey that gave us all kinds of headaches last year (injuries aside) and forced Dobbs to run for his life far too many times? How did they magically get so good in the off-season? Our D line lost talent and we will have several guys coming back from injury...We do not have a power back this season and there will be quite a few LBs out there with unfortunately limited experience. A lot of new faces will be getting more touches at WR.... A new QB....Absolutely no excuse for our secondary to lack in talent though. If teams are able to abuse us with the pass again this year at will, we will be in serious trouble having a winning season. There does seem to be more of a positive and tight team atmosphere leading into this season, and that may be the difference maker, it will definitely be interesting to see who steps up and who has improved.
