How much of that is due to inaccurate throws and drops is the question?

Are you suggesting maybe Dobbs was more accurate throwing to the other guys and JS was just the unfortunate receipient of a higher percentage of his inaccurate throws?

Or the other guys had less drops or something?

I'm not suggesting that JS isn't a contributor and he has clearly made a few critical game winning plays. I'm just saying his catch rate seems a bit inferior to most of his teammates.

Yes, I think that is a legit question. I would guess it's a little of both- drops and some inaccurate throws. Smith is a slot, so he is working the middle. Dobbs' best throws were seams or some slants (and improved his deep throws last year). His worst throws were hitches and short outs and some posts. That is where Smith works. It would take a lot of work to find out, but it's an interesting question.

Not suggesting anything, I was legitimately curious. It could be caused by JS dropping more passing than other WR's, Dobbs and JS not being the same page/inaccurate throws by Dobbs. Would be interesting if there was more of a breakdown

So just compare his numbers with the other slot receivers. I think Josh may be more knowledgeable about the offense and may be a better downfiel blocker. I'm sure there's a good rationale for why he is on the field. Tyler Byrd in 2016 couldn't play every snap and JJ couldn't play every snap in 2015. We needed him. jmo.

Probably can only compare him to Byrd in 2016, and I believe they threw him probably more screen passes or those near the LOS. Just not sure you can straight up compare them without knowing how many passes were beyond the LOS.

Just finished researching the MCB. I am so grateful to have been able to watch players like Dobbs and DB play for our school. Those two guys are class acts. Dobbs broke the rushing TDs record in that game. When DB broke the school sack record.... why do I feel such pride over that? He's the one that worked his but off. I am so glad they are Vols and hope they have loads of success in the League.

Why can't it be that collaway, williams, Byrd AND Smith can ALL be winning players?

I don't get why it always has to be someone is great and the other sucks

BrB is right regarding J-Smith and the opponents not game planning around him. Others are right in pointing out his drops. As he built his body, he lost his fantastic catching skills from HS. Don't know if it is in his head or just gone. He was an acrobat at times in HS with his catches. Sure hasn't been as a Vol. Will see if it is more of the same or improves.

josh is good. always right place and dependable hands. has made a few big time catches. he's an asset. find something else.

Disagree about "right place". Saw many bad routes ran by him last year. I've harped on him in the past about that and ultimately think Byrd is an upgrade. That catch rate/success rate is proof enough to suggest poor play. Absolutely no other way around it.

However, it looks like he's having a good fall camp and I hope he has a great year. He will be a contributor no doubt.

Maybe he wasn't getting the guaranteed catches like bubble screens as much as others?

I just want to see a prepared team against GT. With fire in its belly and clean execution.

I don't want to see the same type of team we saw against appy ST.

That team was flat and had no killler instinct.

Bottom line I want to see a team that gives it everything to win. You can't just expect to show up and win. And you must play to win.

This is why I can't understand the low expectations for this team. I just don't understand where this dramatic drop off is coming from. We should be better lol

Because these "experts" don't dig as deep for info on what might be affecting our teams play. Sure they see injuries and might mention them, but none of them realized how deep and costly to our team they were.

They look at last year's results,
We were ordained to win the East. We lost to Vandy and Sc and it cost us the sugar bowl. We had veteran leadership. Everything was lined up for us to win the East and face bama.

And then we didn't.

Lots of reasons why we didn't but it left a bad taste in their mouths so now they think CBJ is a mediocre coach that can't win with a loaded team.

They basically are butt hurt and won't get over it until we prove them wrong.

But to me Butch has nothing to prove. He did a good job last year and seems to keep trying to improve. As long as he does that and shows the willingness to adapt and make good personnel decisions I think he continues to get new contracts..

Just make us competitive again Butch.

Had the drops his freshman year also.

I'm really hoping we can determine the pace of the game against them. Maybe jump out to a bit of an early lead. If we make them play catch up, I feel good about our defense stopping them most of the day.

If we let them hang around like we did with App State, I worry about their offense wearing us down. If we can't make them throw the ball, it could be a long day.
