'21 Recruiting Forum: Music City Bowl vs. Purdue Pregame/Game Thread

All that will do is get him and the school fined….. the problem is too many calls are subjective….. What do you think they can do to fix it?

I was listening to Nashville sports radio on the way out yesterday morning, and there were non UT people saying it has to be fixed. Joe Rexrode said he’s criticized officiating for a while now- both football and basketball. The money is there to pay for full time officials and hold them accountable. He said college coaches have set the market on salaries even over NFL coaches, so the money is getting bigger and coaches are fired based on wins and losses. Two awful calls can determine someone’s job. There does seem to be more steam from national media after our game.

It would be well worth the money to make a public stand on this trash! Guarantee the boosters would cover it. Everybody else that screams and yells at the refs or calls them out ends up getting the benefit of the doubt the next go round, so why would it be any different for us? I’m sure it would make things worse because we are Tennessee, but it is still worth doing something different than sitting on our hands and saying yes sir, thanks for sucking at officiating the game, but we will continue to plod along and get screwed over multiple games every year.
I would rather those boosters buy us a Top notch defensive line, linebackers, and secondary…. Maybe a few offensive lineman….In the NFL…… plenty of gms and coaches have made public statements and been fined…..In one season….. the Steelers received three letters apologizing for missed calls that cost them games….I don’t think public proclamations has any true effect on what needs to be changed….. we need real solutions on how to fix this issue….. How do you think we should correct it?

Vegas is not paying these officials….. if anything like that is going on….it would be more likely to be a ref with a hidden gambling problem fixing games he has bet on…Refs make 6 figures plus probably travel pay and food stipend…..They are professionals in other fields as well.

The high number that I see is $3k per game in the SEC, and the SEC pays the most. I don’t believe they make 6 figures from officiating games.

They are making over 6 figures per and every call is reviewed weekly and annually with each crew….. What changes would you make? They don’t do it publicly which I guess could change but I also understand why that’s not a great idea…. I’m ok with paying them more and making them full time but not sure if that really fixes the issue.

As I stated above, I don’t see anywhere that says a college official makes 6 figures. There are some reports that some NFL officials make $200k.

There was also a suggestion like maybe MLB does. Umpires are asked questions after games by one selected pool reporter.

You are probably right….. the first thing I googled…. Stated that they make between 75-300,000 a year….. went and rechecked and found many more sites stating 3,000 per game…. I agree that is definitely something that needs to be addressed first.

I was wrong…. I know…. Shocker…. The first thing I googled said between 75-300,000.

When officials make a bad call or miss one there are only two reasons that happens. One it's an honest mistake, whether by incompetence or simply didn't see it correctly. Or two, they have bias. This game, these officials had a bias, at least in my eyes. Now that's brings forth the question of motive. That's what really needs to be investigated. Is there an anti-UT or Anti-SEC bias? Or, is it something more sinister, i.e. gambling or paid influence? There needs to be accountability and these officials should have to answer for it. Until there is some real penalties and some real investigation, at least when it's blatant as the other night, the integrity of the game should be called into question.

Will it happen? Only when Saban comes out on the short end.

if thats the case then im out.
They bank on our skepticism and naivete....the gambling money is too big for there not to be manipulation. The numbers laid on a game like ours has to be way up in the millions.

It is probably one time that the size and passion of our fanbase works against us. I guarantee you that the money laid by our folks dwarfed the money bet by Purdues fanbase.

You want to ban gambling bc your team isn’t as good as you want them to be?
I don't want gambling banned, it's your money you should be able to do whatever you want with it, but I do want intense safeguards to keep it away from manipulation..I don't want stupid platitudes like "oh that could never happen"..I want to know how and why it can never happen.

They should be accountable to the fans of teams they screw over and the integrity of the sport itself. I get why it's a great idea..they need a come to Jesus moment so maybe they will be more careful not to completely screw over one side like they just did us. I will go to my grave knowing that Purdue game, the Pitt game and the Ole Miss games were fixed.

There is no way they had that many bad calls and no calls hugely favoring one team. They didn't make mistakes, they were bent.

Sports betting is a 200 billion dollar industry worldwide. Vegas was built by the mob. There is zero doubt that something so large and built by a group notorious for influencing outcomes, is capable of still doing so today. Whether they are doing so is hard to say, but to blindly state it isn't happening is naive.

A class action lawsuit is just a matter of time. This case would be perfect for it. A definite moment when the outcome was potentially changed for whatever reason. It potentially affected thousands of people who legally bet on the game and were unfairly disenfranchised.
The powers that be need to fix this before something stupid like lawsuits ruin what’s left of this sport.
Smh.

How do you achieve that accountability? I agree they did a sh$t job in our game but every single game that has ever been played….. one side or maybe both teams fans claim and are upset about the officiating whether legit(imo, our game) or just fans mad bc their team lost.

Vegas is making millions daily based off emotional gamblers….. why would they break federal laws to win just a little bit more? Plus if Hooker didn’t miss some of those earlier passes…. That game would have been so out of hand that the officials never would have come into play. Also, why would Vegas do that on a game that mainly just has mainly Tennessee, Purdue, and a few heavy gamblers when the huge money flows in the playoff games?
