ESPN isn’t a good counterpoint to Disney, though, unless you don’t really think about it. It’s not like their problems have everything to do with people’s political disagreements with them and nothing at all to do with

1. Changes in the way people consume sports media (especially recaps and highlights) removing the need for shows like SportsCenter. We can see game highlights and recaps on phones/computers moments after they happen now. Not like 15-20 years ago when you’d need to catch SC on a Sunday morning to see the results of late night PAC-10 games.

2. A general decline in quality of the shows offered and analysts employed for daytime shows.

3. Cord cutters and their impact on cable television in general.

4. Abundance of pirates streams on the internet.

5. Broadcasting contracts that, hindsight being 20/20, were probably pretty bad investments.

Disney will be fine as long as they keep making good quality movies. If they see a decline in quality and/or there’s a massive change in the ways people consume movies, then yeah the political stuff may bite them too. As of right now, there’s no real need to cater to the fringes who clutch their pearls every time a character in a movie is gay or Muslim or something.
So I’m imagining that ESPN president said they were cutting out the political talk because they had lost viewers because people didn’t want to watch it?

Honestly not sure what they’ve said publicly. Also not sure why someone would take it at face value. What do you expect them to say “We’ve lost viewers because the only relevant programming we have anymore is live sports and a 30 for 30 every 3-4 months.”?

ESPN’s been steadily losing viewers for years now, going back way farther than when all the political backlash started around the Kaepernick stuff.

Feel free to pretend that it’s all because of politics if you want, but it doesn’t take a genius to see there’s a lot more going on with ESPN losing viewers than just that. Outside of live sports broadcasting, the business model they were founded on has been outdated for more than a decade now and they’ve been spinning their wheels trying to figure out how to pivot for a while now.

Nobody said there weren’t other factors.

But there’s also this

ESPN president: 'Our fans do not want us to cover politics'

I tried to watch some SC last night after the bravos game. They asked Donaldson about aliens and I turned it off. That stupid crap along with their political crap is why no one watches ESPN. And yes ESPN is comparable to Disney because Disney owns ESPN

I used to watch ESPN when I was a kid when I didnt have immediate access to sports news. Now? I can just pull up VN and see yall freaking out over Henry T taking a vacation in real time. ESPN (and others) are losing viewers because mostly of cord cutters/streaming, horribly expensive TV contracts (they paid a FUQ ton for MNF and people aren't watching) and slightly because my 63 year old aunt is mad on Facebook that they got political.

Just because Disney owns them doesn’t mean their business model is comparable to the business model of Disney’s movie studios. Very different business models.

Exactly. If you gave ESPN execs the option of regaining either

A) All viewers lost due to dumb political talk on air.

Or

B) All viewers lost due to cord cutting/streaming alternatives.

I don’t think there’s really much question which they’d pick.

They're both entertainment. One is sports and one is general. The problem is they both use the general entertainment model. So yes they are comparable

The point remains the same. They lost tons of viewers due to their political talk. It’s a fact. It’s why they issued a company policy banning them from talking politics. Nobody ever said there weren’t other factors.

People will also stop watching Disney movies at the rate they currently are if they decide to go the political route and it seems like they are.

People consume them differently and they’re produced differently though, so it’s not a great comparison.

And nobody wants to see politics talked about when they are turning to entertainment. It’s a fact.
Fox sports has an opportunity to be the go to sports entertainment/info network but they are just sitting back on their hands. I only watch espn if there’s a game on. Can’t watch any of the talking heads.

From 2015 - 2018 every single major sports channel network (ESPN, NBCSN, FS1, Golf, NBATV, etc) lost viewers. TV is in essence a la carte now. You can get HBO separately, with a Netflix account & a Hulu on the side. With ESPN being tied to TV Cable Packages the heavy, heavy majority of the reason for their viewership decline specifically is cord cutting/streaming options.

Yea, the constant political BS on a sports channel has nothing at all to do with it...

Well, science is proven and stuff and makes sense and things. The Bible is...stories written by men a couple thousand years ago and then passed on by more men, all of whom weren't really all that educated. And why would they have been? Imagine what those guys thought when looking up at the stars at night? Exactly. It makes sense that folks wrote these books and told these stories to keep order. It's not really necessary anymore and hasn't been for quite some time.

Paul, who is attributed with about 14 of the 27 NT books, grew up Jewish and was sent off by his family to learn. He probably spoke 3 languages and eventually became a lawyer. He then converted and was one of the most influential figures in the spread of Christianity.

Science and Christianity can go hand in hand, and as a Christian, I believe in some forms of evolution.

I fell behind in this thread and just caught up. I don't like to intervene in discussions that can get really divisive. I want to consider everyone here a neighbor (although it can be hard) regardless of religious or political views. There doesn't have to be a right answer but hope that people respect the other side. The stories out of the Bible can still be necessary even when looking at life issues today. One can start with the Good Samaritan.

Did you even read what I said or do you just want it to solely be political to validate your feelings? The political nature of select hosts or segments might've played a portion of the decline, but its genuinely not even a concern when compared to the actual movement of consumers and the expense of their business model. ESPN was reliant on on-air talent and Monday Night Football/NBA Basketball. They paid WAY too much for those contracts & talent and when people are cutting cords it has cost them immensely.

But then again my aunt who shares InfoWars articles on Facebook for a living thinks that flies are unnaturally attracted to Obama and she agrees it was the politics so GG youre right

Yes, because the only people who didn't like politics on Monday night football and every ESPN show were people like your aunt. Oh, and way to throw a red herring into this discussion by mentioning info wars. ridiculous

It was a joke Bass! Come on now.

What politics happened on MNF? Politics on every ESPN show? That sounds miserable, but then again I mightve missed it because of cord cutting AKA the real reason for media's decline.

My bad Instrumental.

I guess it was the kneeling at the anthem that caused a lot of people to stop watching Monday night football. Their ratings declined pretty dramatically during that whole debacle if memory serves. And yes, ESPN was pushing politics very heavily with woke Kellerman and when they had Jemele Hill under employment there. Thankfully they cut that out and actually banned political discussion from their network.
