No need to rehash this. No one ever debated that people don’t want politics from ESPN. The argument was that, put in perspective, politics is far from their biggest problem. But of course that’s not convenient to your narrative so you imply otherwise and then retreat from discussion when asked if you can quantify the impact politics has had on their decade-long-downturn.

But by all means, go ahead and reply with some weak-ass shifting of the goalposts or “whatever you say” response.

Not sure why it matters how much of a problem it is. It's a problem. Add it with cord-cutting and ESPN trying to create content instead of reporting, and you have them losing subscribers. To me, it doesn't matter if it's 25% of the problem or 75% of the problem, clearly their foray into some politics discussion has hurt them, and it's why their new President has put out his new policy.

Literally all i said was that politics would hurt Disney and used ESPN as an example. Guy came in here and constructed an argument and ascribed it to me, then attacked it and called me weak. Strange

It’s also going to hurt that they are now beginning to push their political agendas. I hope that someday Hollywood and sports will learn that people don’t turn to entertainment to have other people’s political views shoved in our faces

They see it as duty...like evangelical Christians. I respect and understand both. If you truly believe in something, I can't hate. Human beings in a mob. What's a mob to a king? What's a king to a god? What's a god to a nonbeliever, who don't believe in anything?

No doubt. Both groups accept some loss of market share, but believe their cause is larger. I can't disagree. Many things far, far bigger.

The same way I don't expect you will give up your values for others, nor do I expect others will give up their values for your feelings.

Not sure what argument you think I’ve ascribed to you. Only points I tried to make are that Disney and ESPN aren’t analogous, ESPN’s issues range much wider than politics, and that for all the angry tweets you can point to there is no data to quantify what impact politics specifically has played in their downturn.

The only real argument you made in response were that ESPN’s president admitted it was an issue publicly. Other than that it’s been nothing but goalpost shifting and snide non-responses. Obviously the butthurt is still there or you wouldn’t be posting tangentially-related tweets that prop your position without engaging in the larger conversation.

He must be bored because that debate is pointless. Arguing if politics has attributed to 40% of a decline or 30% of a decline. It very clearly has attributed to it probably along with some other things. Who cares if someone can’t name the number? The fact that the new President of the company implemented a new policy clearly shows he thinks it’s an issue.

Agreed with the bolded part. I just think that framing a discussion as if it’s the issue behind their decline, shifting the goalposts when it’s pointed out otherwise, deflecting from the discussion, trying to rehash everything a day later, and then pretending that you have no emotional investment in the discussion is indicative of intellectual dishonesty and low moral fiber.

Yeah... I didn’t do any of these things. But keep shooting arrows at your straw man!

I made a general statement about politics hurting ratings and you came here attributing all these things to me and getting upset. It’s a strange debate you’re having.

That’s cool. Never would have considered suggesting someone has low moral fiber with this discussion. Clearly ruffled some feathers, and Bass’s history probably had something to do with that.

Really? Discussion started with Disney movies and ESPN was brought up by you as a way to shift the goalposts.

Might wanna spend some time looking into what straw man means. Here are quotes of you doing every one of the things you just denied doing 🤥

Nah they’ll be fine. You’re kidding yourself if you think Disney is concerned with political issues other than those that affect their bottom line.

A lot of Disney “pushing political agendas” is really just them trying to pander to audiences demanding those things. If the messages in their movies bother you so much that you’re likely to quit watching their movies, then you’re probably not in the demographic they’ve deemed most valuable.

Yeah... people don’t care about that. Just ask ESPN.

Framing the discussion as if politics was the main issue behind ESPN’s decline ✅

ESPN isn’t a good counterpoint to Disney, though, unless you don’t really think about it. It’s not like their problems have everything to do with people’s political disagreements with them and nothing at all to do with

1. Changes in the way people consume sports media (especially recaps and highlights) removing the need for shows like SportsCenter. We can see game highlights and recaps on phones/computers moments after they happen now. Not like 15-20 years ago when you’d need to catch SC on a Sunday morning to see the results of late night PAC-10 games.

2. A general decline in quality of the shows offered and analysts employed for daytime shows.

3. Cord cutters and their impact on cable television in general.

4. Abundance of pirates streams on the internet.

5. Broadcasting contracts that, hindsight being 20/20, were probably pretty bad investments.

Disney will be fine as long as they keep making good quality movies. If they see a decline in quality and/or there’s a massive change in the ways people consume movies, then yeah the political stuff may bite them too. As of right now, there’s no real need to cater to the fringes who clutch their pearls every time a character in a movie is gay or Muslim or something.

So I’m imagining that ESPN president said they were cutting out the political talk because they had lost viewers because people didn’t want to watch it?
Shifting goalpost when it’s brought up ESPN has other larger issues on its hands as well✅

Long history of disingenuousness and hypocrisy, so yeah. If it was someone else and I hadn’t been bored riding trains the past few days I’d have probably just scrolled on by and let it be.

But even in this postmodern society, objective truth still exists and a spade must be called a spade 🤣[/b]

Literally my first post was this:
It’s also going to hurt that they are now beginning to push their political agendas. I hope that someday Hollywood and sports will learn that people don’t turn to entertainment to have other people’s political views shoved in our faces
Note the phrase: “It is ALSO (ALSO) going to hurt that they push politics. What does the word also mean? It means that clearly there are other contributing factors. And yet, here you are in your last response saying
I just think that framing a discussion as if it’s the issue behind their decline, shifting the goalposts when it’s pointed out otherwise
So my very first post, which is noticeably absent from your most recent rant, assumed other contributing factors, and here you are saying that I framed it as if it was THE issue. That is not my argument, never was my argument, but you treated it as tho it was. This has been your debate from the beginning, not mine. I brought ESPN up as an example of how pushing politics hurt ratings. And I was right about that. Nothing more. You made it something more by contributing to me arguments and motives that weren’t mine. The reason I posted “whatever you say” is because you were debating a straw man and not me. I’m not going to defend a position that isn’t mine.

As I said, this is a strange debate that you, and only you, are having as I never said that politics was the only reason. You made that up.

Your interpretation of all those posts is just strange. I didn’t take it as framing it that politics was the only issue but maybe he believes it’s more than others. So, yea, Bass saying it had everything to do with it.

Politics contributed to ESPN's drop in ratings, just as it will contribute to a drop in rating for Disney movies if they choose to go that direction because people don't watch entertainment to hear about other people's politics. . All I said. All I meant. This whole discussion has just been weird.

Oh, and now I'm a hypocrite and disingenuous because I didn't defend a position that wasn't mine in the first place.
