Right.... like when Shrout played one series and made a bad throw across his body and never saw the field again..... wasn’t even intercepted and we still got 3 points out of the drive......

Super short leash for that kid..... also threw the prettiest TD I had seen in a long time.....
Exact example I’ve thought of for Shrout. Matter of fact, iirc, when Pruitt gave that reason for pulling Shrout, I believe he said something like “we can’t turn the ball over”, even though Shrout didn’t actually turn the gall over.....and even though Guarantano actually HAD turned the ball over with a little lollipop pass over the middle that was intercepted in the end zone earlier in the game.

Also, that “prettiest TD pass in a long time” stood in stark contrast to Guarantano’s pass on the exact same play earlier in the game. Callaway ran the EXACT same play/route earlier in the game, only that time it wasn’t a touchdown because Guarantano was inaccurate, Callaway had to slow up, and it became a jump ball that Marquez was able to go up and pull down.....it was a long gain, but it wasn’t a touchdown, because it wasn’t the perfect thrown like Shrout’s which allowed to Callaway to catch it in stride and score.

Wow. That's quite a reversal.

I'm pretty pessimistic on JG now too... but man... that's a big switch for you.
I go with what I see. Last year I felt confident in what I posted about Guarantano, thought he needed defending from guys saying his 2018 season was awful, that he sucked or that he was actually the reason why we lost games. Didn’t think it was fair to him because although he surely wasn’t a great, top tier QB in the conference, I thought he our best offensive player and the reason we won vs Auburn and the biggest reason we beat Kentucky. He was the best among a really bad group. Also, Maurer, obviously, wasn’t on the team last year, only Chryst, and it was beyond obvious that Guarantano was much better.

That said, with more data, more examples, more evidence, had to change my opinion. Not sure exactly how to phrase this, but it’s as though the the team “outgrew” Guarantano and he went from being the best (although certainly not great) offensive player, to the player who’s now holding the offense back. He’s just been awful on balance this year in about 8-9 of the 13 games....just awful. And there’s just no way that this team can get to where it wants to go, where it needs to go, with a wildly mercurial, inconsistent, emotionally unstable, and at times just awful quarterback.

Yeah, but how are things going with Dee Beckwith?

Right . JG was the only one given the opportunity to overcome adversity.
The others it was do good or your out!
While JG was given unlimited opportunity to come back from mistake after mistake

JG was given more leeway because the other 2 struggled badly with their pre-snap reads and their ability to read defensive coverages. Our running game, while rather average overall, was pretty much non-existent when one of the freshmen were in.

That sounds like you’re describing JG.

😬😅Can't blame you for this, given everthing said. But if a reversal means I don't have to read anymore snarky - the JG "dislikers", I'm just gonna go with it and move on.
Nah. I really like KBVol. Always have. I was just amazed at how much he was willing to ignore and deny about JG.

I wasn't mocking you or anything like that. I've liked and respected you here.

I think your assessment of JG was wrong. He's pretty much the same guy. His inability to read, process, and anticipate has hurt the O since he became the starter. While there was plenty of blame to put on others, there are few things that hurt an OL more than an indecisive QB who holds the ball too long.

But... glad you see it now.

Maurer was outstanding from the pocket in the first half vs the best defense we played all year, Georgia .....200+ yards and 2 tds. He obviously needs more coaching and more experience to improve his mental acumen as a collegiate QB.

Unfortunately, any Tennessee QB not named Jarrett Guarantano had the shortest of leashes last season so they weren’t able to get the reps needed to further their understanding of the offense in game situations.....while, conversely, Guarantano could make as many mistakes as he could possibly muster with little to no consequence.

Maurer had two concussions in about as many weeks otherwise I think he would have won the job for the balance of the season. JG came back and played well during that stretch run and re-won the job; which means he got most of the reps with the 1's. So Maurer got behind in his progress. Many think Bailey comes in and takes the job but there's a good chance if Mauer gains a few pounds and gets in the film room this off season he's the starting QB in the 2020 opener.
