Recruiting forum off topic thread (no politics, covid, or hot button issues)

The thought that we can regulate AI to minimize the negative consequences is misguided. Did regulations have the intended effect during prohibition? Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, have you checked the statistics on gun violence in Chicago recently? Regulations are only effective to the extent that people are willing to abide by them. There always has been and always will be, someone who will go against regulations if it advantageous to them. I am not naive, that train has already left the station and I don’t believe it will be stopped. Pandora’s box has been opened and nobody knows where all of this is going to end.

Different types of regulations completely. The regulations they speak of are things like trying to make the tools needed for AI more transparent and auditable by businesses and entities. The reason why that can work as a starting point is because the AI that the leaders fear, like ChatGPT level of developed AI, isn't just hanging out on the streets for anyone to break the law and gain access to, its the AI being developed by companies and governments with no rules or regulations in place. It took over $500M to develop ChatGPT. It took 10,000 of the most powerful GPUs available to power it's research and keep it running, and that's not even mentioning taking some of the brightest minds to tie it all together. That's why leaders like Musk, Hinton and Altman are working with government leaders to get the conversation started, because it's not some criminal on the streets of Chicago they are scared of. It's the companies in the AI arms race that developing to quick, and went from research to for profit to soon.

The open letter – signed by OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, co-author of the world’s most-used AI textbook Stuart Russell, and thousands of others – warns of the “out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control.”

Musk, Wozniak, and thousands of others are concerned this race is beyond even the creators ability to do what you propose; understand, predict, or reliably control.

Yet that letter wasn't to stop AI. It's do exactly like what your first sentence says.. stop the arms race between companies like Microsoft, Google, etc. When you develop so fast that you can't do adequate research before implementing into products or services, then yeah, that's a problem. That same letter also had this to say: "Humanity can enjoy a flourishing future with AI. Having succeeded in creating powerful AI systems, we can now enjoy an "AI summer" in which we reap the rewards, engineer these systems for the clear benefit of all, and give society a chance to adapt." That letter was 100% right. AI is the future, and it will do brilliant things, but we need to slow down and understand it better.

Anyways, you're not going to change my mind and I'm not going to change yours. You have your opinions, I have mine. No need to clog up the thread anymore.

😆

Yes fair point (why any of this dickswinging caveman ego talk means anything at all to anyone is beyond me)

but tbf some of them are coming from a psychotic perspective too. Russian leaders would say we're soft because we're not Putin invading a free country without provocation. "Americans, zee they are soo soft. Weak they no kill with total disregard like me! I am man! Ride horse with no shirt and imprison ze gays!"

They would say we're soft because they have Napoleon Bonaparte complex. Their leader shows same bravado as Yosemite Sam jawing off to Bugs. Who outsmarts him every time. Collectively, they respect us. Love their Country but realize deep down that this is land of Opportunity. They think we are weak because we're fat, and overweight. A simple terrorist attack on 9-11, begets a world tragedy meanwhile they've dealt with it for centuries.

In reality, we arent soft. Our bravado is real. But, we are best when we speak softly, and carry a big stick.

Yes. Never tell a woman how many questions she can ask.
