Serious question.

Why were our DL so far off the LOS? It seems to me if we would've jammed their OL more they wouldn't have gotten nearly as push. They had a good two yards to build up a head of steam before they got to our DL and it was no wonder they picked up 3 or 4 yards minimum on every play.

Also, what is the rule about going low to block someone downfield? There was multiple times where their fullback or RB would go low on our LBs three or four yards down the field. I thought chop blocking was illegal down the field like that. Can someone explain that to me because it was passing me off but the refs weren't calling it so I figured it was legit. Then when they didn't call holding or the block in the back, I thought maybe they forgot their little yellow hankies and maybe it is illegal to block down the field like that. TIA.

Harder to dive at their knees. It's why you kept seeing their OL false start. They needed the extra time to get their blocks. It was never called.

It just didn't seem like it was all that effective. Maybe should've tried something else like starting in a super low stance right up on the LOS and take the OL out at the knees. See how they like that shtuff.

I thought the same thing. That and the corners being so far off the ball was baffling. You're giving the QB an extra couple of yards to make that option decision.

I didn't understand this either. It would seem to me it would be better to have the CBs play on the LOS, so that they could take the pitch man, and allow a LB or DE to punish the QB every time he comes down the line on the option. Instead, they had already gained 3-4 yards before even needing to maybe make a decision to pitch it. At that point, it's not worth the risk plus our only free guy always ran past QB to take the pitch man.

No wonder we beat Cal that year, they had a white e secondary.

I'm not complaining about anything. I saw more resiliency in that team last night than any game i have ever seen the Vols play in my 44 years. You can nitpick the coaches or the players buy to me that heart is most important. They deserve a day of basking in the win before getting ready for indy st. And i for one am gonna let 'em.

Heart schmart. Fahr Butch!

Still happy we got the win and I'm gonna reserve judgement for a few more games but I have serious concerns about our D. Don't know if it's Shoop or if Butch is forcing him to play a certain way but I don't like our style. Hopefully we look much better against a traditional offense and when Tuttle gets back into the rotation. Our DTs were running on fumes. Hopefully Ignont can get up to speed.

Very encouraging to see some big time playmakers on both sides of the ball though.

Good thing the team has more heart than most of our fans.

So very glad you are satisfied with our team's "resiliency". It will take more than the defensive effort I witnessed last evening to win a majority of our games. Cannot figure out what Shoop and Hoke are doing. Just glad we got the win.

Don't paint everyone with the broad brush of "Not Fans" because we happen to call a spade a spade.

Our DTs did not play a good game. But they had multiple things going against them that they failed to overcome. One of those is that GT OL were alternating between cut-blocking and firing off the ball. That's a tough spot, in the back of the DL mind they don't know if the OL is about to dive at their knees or fire off and punch you right in the chest. Be mentally prepared for one of those things leaves you vulnerable to the other. Being off the LOS allows them more room to avoid cut blocks but it left them vulnerable to getting pushed back. It was good coaching adjustment by Johnson.

Most of our fans aren't fans.

Lol! So true. I'll give y'all a quick glimpse of our fanbase...

Guy sitting next to me last night is going crazy all night that Butch stinks, WRs can't catch, jumped all over Butch and Wolf when Wolf let the deep ball hit the turf (although Wolf was laid out in full extension trying to catch it). When we get to OT, he asks me what happens in OT and how is it set up in college football. I explained it to him, yet in the back of my mind I'm thinking "you are in Orange and reaming our team, yet you don't know how OT works??? I mean we played in 2 OT games just last year...did you just start being a fan this year???"

Also, there were many around me jumping down Butch's throat because our WRs can't catch the ball. Lol. It's amazing how blind a lot of our fanbase is. It's why we get picked on so much by the media.

The QB was playing like garbage for two quarters. There was time for a change

I remember seeing 5-6 dropped balls from wideouts during the first half. 3-4 coming from the first 2 drives of the night. Those wideouts catch those passes and I think that helps Dormady settle in quicker than he did. Outcome would have been different, IMO.

I feel we should have came out running and used it to set up the pass. I think it would have settled QD a lot faster and, if productive, kept our D off the field. Our offensive play calling did the D no favors last night early in the game.

Agreed. Our fanbase does it to themselves. For those who ring Butch for his butchisms and "stupid things like a trash can ont he sideline", pot meet kettle. I will say that our wideouts dropped way too many passes in the first half and I couldn't believe that. They got their act together and performed. IMO, they catch 4 of those dropped passes, especially the 3-4 that were dropped on the first two offensive series alone, Dormady settles in quicker and the outcome is different. But, we still won and that is hard to do being 14 points down to a triple option team.

Play calling I put on the coaches. We abandoned the run at times we shouldn't have and went full Chaney. Never go full Chaney when you have Kelly as you RB. The dude Mack trucked GT defenders. I think Dormady should have kept the ball to keep the defense more honest, though. Notice how they reacted when he kept it the one time in the fourth quarter? He needs to keep it 3-4 times a game. He isn't a Dobbs threat on the ground, but he will gain 4-6 yards consistently with that and I am okay with that. Use it.

I think last night will be an anomaly for the defense. Most teams, even Bama, struggles to defend the triple option. Especially if they don't have to play against them year in and year out. While there are a lot of negatives to look for in last night's performance, there are plenty of positives as well. I don't think either will be indicative of our team. We need a larger sample size before we are quick to pass judgment. While you may not be happy with the team's resiliency, it is an important intangible for a team.
