‘23 Recruiting Forum: Official Kentucky Pregame/Game Thread

I think... Early on Leary and the UK wr's played their best game. Coverage really wasn't bad... More than a couple contested catches that you just tip your hat to UK on...

I'll had a good plan for the passrush and they played well on the offensive line in pass pro.

Which is why I'm even more impressed with how we won that game... From a plan standpoint we did what we wanted to defensively... It just didn't work exactly how we hoped it would...

And we still won. Joe, Wright, Sampson.... Great game.

Defense made the stops it had to and stuffed the run all game...
Very solid win. GBO!
This. Was texting with a friend that played for UK during the late 90's last night, and he prefaced the game with their qb is very "sub par". I commented and said bad qb's always play their best game vs the Vols...and he did! Kid was dropping dimes, and the WR's ran very good. crisp routes, and made catches. Our coverage and scheme was not bad at all, UK just made plays. I was glad to see even with the passing game clicking, they could not get run game going. Had our D not done so well against the run, it would have been a bad ending.

It seems like we always ran deep zone last night leaving 10 yards of cushion, and Leary ate us alive on comebacks and out routes, if we tightened our coverage we probably would have allowed a lot less of yards.
I think I may be seeing a pattern with our defense… As I think back, does it seem like we always play a ton of soft zone when we are on the road, and play more aggressively at home? Play not to lose on the road and play the win at home… seems like the pattern

Not sure of that exact thing. But, I did see a lot of zone last night.

We were hoping we could rush four. Which just hsnt worked recently, not sure what the change was.

Also, when we did blitz. We came up empty handed. Got to find a way to get to the QB.

Some may not admit it, but losing Hadden hurts. Even though he got called for a couple of PI’s early in the year, his coverage was fantastic.
I don't know that I'd say fantastic, but he was better than our other options. He was a liability sometimes in a lot of ways, but he definitely is a loss.

I’m thinking Zoned up Bc the Kentucky run game and the mismatch of brown in the slot. We are too big of a program to not have an elite Nickel/slot CB tho, somethings lost in the translation.
Doneiko, Matthew’s, Turnage etc... someone should have stepped up

He’s a good guy and coach, he should bail out of UK asap and go to a school that actually supports football and he would actually be successful
But he's getting paid well and has some of the best job security in the league. I'm not sure he'd care to jump ship.

Our strategy is to recruit as many DB's as possible. Better have a coachable attitude, much more important than things like speed, versatility, vision, ability to tackle. Same for DL. Also have to be older than 23 yo to apply.

Then have them play 4,000 different positions.

Perspective:

7-2 at this point in the season sounds outstanding to any Vol fan between the years of 09-21.

The program has elevated itself back, and I am more than pleased to feel slightly displeased at my team’s current play with a 7-2 record.

A single season does not elevate a program to a new level. Consistency does. Y’all gotta give Heup time to put up Ws more than once before you become displeased with 7-2 in Y3.

His level of success has a ceiling. He’s trying to play Bama football from early Saban years but with lesser talent. And he’ll never have that talent. UK runs like the 3rd fewest plays per game in CFB.

He hasn’t evolved at all during his tenure. He’d flame out somewhere else.
We completely shut down the run and they had to pass and were having success.
They were playing faster than they ever do and Leary got into a rythem and went from completing 55% on the season to 75% last night.

Here’s your clue Stoops: it’s not 1975

I think it may have more to do with the other teams offense rather than if we are home or on the road

And I know Doneiko’s been fighting thru injuries but this year could/should have been his Theo Jackson year.
The way he finished last year wow. Smh smh

After fahring Halzle multiple times this season, it occurs. Why in the bloody hell can we not dial up a PA to TE call around the GL? Hell, a PA to Milton run.

If PM could run a nekked bootleg wearing those clown shoes, surely to goodness we can think something up.

Play calling, moreover, execution has been putrid.

Lands above, had we not landed Charlie Campbell...

Not my feeling at all. Just pointing out positives…

The program has been elevated in a short time. The floor has been elevated to 7-8 wins rather than 5-6 wins. Better than it’s been since the 06-07 timeframe. Championship aspirations was stupid this year. Depth is still an issue. 9-3 with 8-4 being the floor was reasonable and that is more than achievable at this point.

Let’s whoop Mizzou’s arse and get some Neyland Magic against bowl cut and go 10-2

Perhaps this is cynical of me, but I think there is zero chance we will be permitted to win that Georgia game, even if we do manage to outplay them. The stripes will have strict marching orders to make sure the intended result (Georgia winning and staying unbeaten) is achieved by any means necessary.

Realistic, sadly. The Birmingham Office is seriously, no exaggeration, ruining football.

And all the no-calls they use are recklessing endangering player health and safety.

It puts enormous extra pressure on DBs when our DL is held with impunity.

No doubt, we need a lot of improvement there -- and freshman help is in the building with more on the way. But it's just a fact that the holding no-calls are simultaneously (1) neutralizing our defensive strength while (2) weakening our weakest point.

It also recklessly endanger our players' health and safety. It's a major issue regarding the treatment of student athletes.

I don’t think it matters.
Our boys will play inspired.
Our crowd will be an insane asylum.
Georgia is due a loss.
We are beating the dawgs.
Write it down.
