Recruiting Forum: Official Oklahoma Pre-Game/Game Thread

Agreed. We pushed BG around. They sucked at containing Hurd and Kamara in the box. If we can seal the ends and get CT out there pulling we may have a great ground game.

I watched some of the OU game from this weekend. They play striker and another guy named Bond together quite a bit. Both of those guys are around the same size. I'm pretty confident in our OL/TE being able to out muscle those guys. Our run game will eat Saturday night.

Out muscle, yes. Also get beat by pure speed a good bit IMO.

If we can establish a solid run game it will neutralize their speed rushers though.

I watched Oklahoma some in their first game today. I'm a bit more confident than I already was. That O-line isn't really good at all. I can see this going just like I called during the Summer. This will be Cal 2006. Akron slaw line actually got some push on running plays. We'll maul them upfront. Plus they've got bigger, faster, and more talented team fired up.

I also see a big Special teams advantage.

Baker Mayfield isn't good either. He's still throwing into traffic.

I can't wait for Saturday!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing about Mayfield. He looks at times like he could be good... He made a couple of good throws. But for the most part, even the throws he completed were contested or just great catches by the WR. He doesn't make the easy throws look easy.

I also can't get out of my head how early in that game they didn't trust him to throw on 3rd and long at all. They had that set up 3 or 4 times I saw and ran draw plays and screens and safe plays. That doesn't show a lot of confidence in the QB to me.

If our weakest link on our team is our secondary, he is going to have to show something he hasn't really shown before to take advantage of it.

I agree on everthing you said except for one. This game will have the same result as Cal 2006, but the difference here is we're the more talented team this team as well as the team who'll run away with the game.

In 2006, we really just rode the home field momentum against a team that was much better and filled with several future NFL stars. This time I believe we're the team filled with future NFL stars. Should be an awesome game. I can't wait for Saturday either.

Ha, first offensive play for Tennessee: striker flys by our OT then gets pancaked by Jalen Hurd.
His speed rush will turn into a jog as he checks the backfield to make sure Hurd is nowhere near his side of the play...
As he goes to the sideline with the Earth spinning, he hears Kerbyson giggle

They weren't better than us in 2006. Our team was loaded that year too. They got smashed by the better team period.

31-28 UT wins.

I think it will be a nailbitter in the 4th quarter. This is a house money game, meaning that even if we lose, we can still have a really good year. Winning this game would be nice though.

This. From the opening kickoff where Cal's TE got knocked the F out we flat out ran Cal out of Neyland. One of my favorite games I've ever been to.

Tennessee opens it's true home schedule this week against a formidable powerhouse in Oklahoma. Last year, the Sooners beat the Vols pretty badly, with our offensive line taking a whipping, and Justin Worley taking it even worse. However, there were a few plays, that had they gone a little bit differently, could have made the game very interesting.

A lot can change in a year, and most expect the Sooners to encounter a Tennessee team that is much improved and ready for a dog fight. This time, it looks like we've got the dogs to stand toe to toe.

Keys to the game:

1. Break Baker: Baker Mayfield runs the Air Raid offense for Oklahoma. This set typically sees four wide receivers and a single running back... not exactly the offense you would hope to see after a shaky showing by the Tennessee secondary last week. However, the Oklahoma offensive line is inexperienced, and the Tennessee defensive line is not, which means if we can get pressure on Mayfield early and often, the best Mayfield in Tennessee on Saturday night will still be found in the yellow carton in your grocery's frozen dessert section.

2. Strike Striker: Last season, linebacker Eric Striker came peeling off of the edge like a bat out of hell. Though he didn't register an official sack, it sure seemed like it, and he "hurried" Worley 3 times and caused a lot of problems for the OL. This year, the Vols have to do a better job at protecting the QB. The offensive line looked improved last week, but as we know, that was Bowling Green, not Oklahoma. Look for the running backs to have a key part in protecting Dobbs and giving him time to find a receiver.

3. From Attrition to Addition: This week, the Vols add assistant head coach/DB coach Willie Martinez. All Vol fans are praying that his absence was the reason that our DB's looked like they had no clue what to do half of the time. I'm not sure how much truth there is to that, but there was certainly some communication problems on the back end, and you have to think Martinez would have sorted that out quickly. The Vols also get back Pig. Our favorite multi-purpose yard gainer will be a welcome addition, and will likely be targeted early and often. If Justin Martin is ready to go, that is huge for the DB's. TK Jr. is ready to go. No one really knows what to expect from Marquez North. Apparently, healthy enough to play, but not be targeted, so who knows if he is ready to catch or just run around. The bottom line is, Tennessee just got a lot better than they were last week.

4. Run CMG:
Even with the atrocious play of the OL last year, the Vols ran pretty well against OK. Hurd picked up 97 yards and Marlin Lane ran for 4.2 yards per carry. How do you think this year's Hurd and Alvin Kamara may fare? Probably, pretty well. Add in the Dobbs element, that forces a defense to stay honest, and you have a recipe for a big game on the ground. The Vols need to run often, run hard, and completely drive the ball down the throats of their opponent.

5. Let them know...Bob Stoops is telling the media that Knoxville is not a big deal for his team, and they've played in big games. Sorry Bob, but Neyland is about to rain 100,000 frenzied fans on your head. Let me know how the communication is with your OL during that first quarter. If the Vols get some points on the board early, it's gonna be even worse. Hands down, this is the most anticipated game in Knoxville since Florida came to town in 2012, and that game was fever pitch. Now, expectations are higher, and achievable, and Oklahoma gets to experience the full brunt of years of frustration. We're ready for a big win.

Prediction: I'm having an awful time with this game. It's so hard to call, which means it should be a great game. At this moment, I think Tennessee wins a scrappy game with a dominant run game. Oklahoma gets their points on a soft secondary, but it is enough to hold.

Tennessee 31
Oklahoma 30

I was at that game, and despite leaving disappointed, I truly don't think anyone who wasn't there (or at least hasn't been at an ENORMOUS UT game before) can comprehend how loud that was at times. Had a few gators who never been to Neyland before worried that the stadium was falling or that there was an earthquake.

If we get even 80% of that from the fans for this game, I expect a win.

As loud as it was after CP's first touchdown or after the failed fake punt by Florida, it was just as deafeningly silent when Trey Burton went 80 yards.

I was there and would agree. That game was gutrenching though & man were UGA fans obnoxious after that one.

Hoping for same or better atmosphere with a different result!

Georgia fans in front of us asked everyone to be quiet because we were hurting their little kid's ears.

Lol it got bad for them

One yelled that we were living in the past by showing Peyton Manning on the intro. If you've ever been to a Uga game, they play that Hershel walker play against UT every. Damn. Game. So I let the chicken know the time difference and surrounding Georgia fans told her to sit down and shut up. A mic was dropped that day.

Ehhh i say go for it

Hah I sort of agree. If it comes down to the end and we win. I could live with it.

But it would look pretty cool if we acted like we belonged there and expected to win.

It has been a long time though. A win takes us to the next level. I won't fault the crowd if they do it.
