And we continued putting them in situations that they were going to to lose. That's coaching. WV had a weak secondary and they didn't put them in those situations. You keep saying Gier is all world. I could have kicked it to those receivers they were so wide open. We made Grier look much better than he is. Watch when he's up against a good Day. He's good but ain't that good. You’re just not giving any good examples of “bad coaching”. Sounds like you’re upset for a draw call on 3rd and 5 or whatever. When WVU gashed us twice on draws in similar situations.
We started 3 true freshman defensive backs against one of the best passing attacks in college football. If you go back and watch we actually kept them from gettin off the line and into their routes several times.
Did you really and honestly expect us to come down and lock up a heisman caliber QB and WR with this secondary?
I’m defending it because i saw us be creative on defense. We brought blitzes from every level and direction but we Just never really got there. That’s not coaching. That’s player execution.
I have to admit that I expected much better but i think it’s unfair to expect too much. There is a reason we have so many freshman starting on D.

You keep saying we have inexperienced secondary, 3 freshmen, why keep putting them in situations where they are going to lose 9 out if 10 times? Maybe WV has better coaches since they didn't put their inexperienced secondary it situations that were obviously bad matchups. That's coaching.Did you not see the throw down the numbers he had? That was a dime. Or the TD throw when Warrior was in good position??
You keep saying we didn’t test their secondary... they knew they were going to score on offense so they come out and play soft coverage with deep safeties the whole game. It would’ve been stupid to try and stretch the field against that. That’s how you turn the ball over. We marched the ball dkwn the field on the multiple times but we were never going to keep up with their scoring.

You never did answer my question about the ultimate offensive statistic. We'll let me help you out here. The score. Do you think 14 points is a good offensive outing?
secondary does not tackle well at all. A lot of shouldering and pushing... Warrior ran with a WR for 6yds pushing at him until he got into the end zone, how about actually tackling? Coverage too soft, even when we had nothing to lose, very poor angles, no tracking the ball, and overall getting basically torched to where they could play simple pass and catch every play. Plenty of miscommunication on the back end. Several kids back there need to sit and let us try someone else... throw Fils-aime and Byrd out there...
You know what the saying is.... Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. I would have went to a zone, disguised my blitzes. I would have made Grier have to think. The way we did all he had to do was throw the ball up towards sigle coverage whether that was from a pre-snap read or throw to the receiver where the blitz came from. It was way too easy.I’m not saying we were lights out on offense. But i liked our game plan. We were balanced. Did exactly what you’re supposed to do with the defense we were facing.
And in regards to putting them in bad situations what would you have done different? We getting absolutely no pressure from our edge players which is critical in a 3-4 scheme. So are you just gonna keep sending 3 or 4? And let Grier sit back there all day.
We tried to be aggressive and make things happen on defense. But we just didn’t make the plays.
Janzen Jackson had all the talent in the world just didn’t have his head all the way screwed on. Your point still stands though, our DBs have been for the most part unspectacular for a while. Even Sutton seemed to regress while he was here.We have really not had a talented secondary across the board since like 2001. Even though Eric Berry is worth 3 or 4 players, he was really the only one on those teams that would’ve started in a great SEC secondary. I think Pruitt will get us back in that department, but the fact that we had 3 true freshmen playing over some DB’s that have been there for 3 or 4 years says it will take a while for him to get his own guys back there.
WR version of Jason Witten. Won’t wow anyone at the combine, but the guy just knows how to get open. His skill set is more refined than a lot of NFL WRs.Yeah, all that, "he's not that good, slow, white and just get catches because he is big and tall in the red zone" was wrong. He is damn good and will play 5+ years in the NFL and could be a star
I would rather make them earn it as opposed to giving up the big plays over the top expecting a shaky S to make the play.I’m not saying we were lights out on offense. But i liked our game plan. We were balanced. Did exactly what you’re supposed to do with the defense we were facing.

And by the way. He had all day for the most part anyway.
So it was taking them 10 plays to score instead of five. I see zero reason to put freshmen DBs in on on one situations they are bound to lose unless you are just trying to get them experience regardless of the cost. You also run the risk of damaging their psyche. He was picking us apart in zone the 1st Q

I would much rather make them chip their way down the field as giving up 30-50 yard plays.
Oh I agree about protecting the S, just not the zone part of it. I said that above.
