Recruiting Forum: UNofficial Vandy Pre-Game Thread

Weatherd is a prototypical Mike, IMO. But he's still yet to play a single snap all season in our 4-3 or 4-2-5 package. Only in the 3-3-5 sub. That's just odd to me.

Finally started using Bynum and Weatherd. D gets the stop. Now how hard was that to do, Butch? Play the right players.

Those runs up the middle and by Robinette do not happen if Weatherd is there. Everybody keeps wanting a Mike. There he is. Use Bynum at Sam and JRM at Will when 3 are in the game.

Maybe next year. Honestly right now I don't think Weatherd is anything but a spy/pass rush specialist. He's really good at that, but I don't see him being able to hold down the Mike spot full time today.

WE are going to a bowl. This is rivalry game with what they have done the last couple years.

We lost our best offensive player and had to dig deep.

This defense was playing without its leader.

The seeds of doubt were with everyone when the 4th year guys have gone through what they have.

An SEC road win is good every time you can get it, and when you can get 2 straight you take it every single time.

We could have quit when we lost AJ.

We could have backed down when Jalen went out with an injury or when Croom couldnt be a full go, but they didnt.

Sure the clock management and playcalling at the end was not what I prefer, but I also remember that our receivers have issues getting open and our QB didnt throw the ball very well today.

The reality is that if you offered me 6-6 before the season, I would have absolutely taken it every single time. That was the goal for this team and they just won the most important game for this program in the last 7 years.

GO VOLS!

We still have a ton to work on, but we earned 15 more practices towards that goal today.

I wonder if maybe this year, Butch knew our margin for error was low and so he played very conservatively all year. And yes I know it's vandy.

But maybe next year and going forward, he will take a few more risks.

I hope so anyways. There have been several times we should have played a situation a bit more aggressively.

Man I hope this is the case, because it seemed to me we were playing scared and not conservative. I hate that mentality.

I couldn't help but smile seeing those kids so pumped up after that win man. It was a long, hard roadwith a lot of casualties along the way, and it wasn't always pretty...but we're going bowling boys.

He got here in August. He is a prototypical spy that would get eaten up in the run game up the middle imo.

With 15 bowl practices and a spring I think he could be a weapon next year.

A win is a win and I think everyone will take it. But, I don't think our current offensive philosophy will allow us to win consistently in the SEC.

Yeah, I'm not saying Weatherd should've been playing over Jacob/Bynum. His skillset just fits the Mike profile to me.

I just find it odd that he only plays in sub sets. You hear of situational players, but rarely does someone play 100% of their snaps in a single sub set. I suppose he just didn't have the playbook down.

I think a lot of it has to do with how late he came in. It's hard for a JUCO guy to miss almost all of camp then come in and be the QB of the offense at any point during the season. He's probably been playing catchup with the playbook all season.

Yeah, that is very true. I'm interested to see how his role will expand next season.

I feel like I just ran a 10k. What a horribly played game on both sides. Something has to be done differently next year. This offense is a joke.

And I agree --- please give us the worst 6 win team in the nation.

Glad Dobbs is going to get the extra practices and game - he needs it. His passing stunk. Don't know why Kerby isn't the RG and Kendrick the LT, but it obviously is not what Butch wants to do or he would make it happen. Hope it works out for him with what he has on the field. Hurd would have made a difference in this game. Lane tries hard but is nowhere near as good as Hurd. Forget Jake. Until there is a change in the OC this is what you get. He will give you two good games per year. You will have to win on talent and grit the rest of the time.

JRM, Weatherd, and Bynum at LB with Curt at DE full time IMO. When you go 3 man rush, Weatherd to spy and rush late. It's the best D combination on the field. You can float Curt out into coverage and bring Weatherd to disguise things at times. In nickel they can alternate Weatherd and Bynum based on situation. JRM stays in 24/7.

But what do I know - just an armchair QB.

We played tonight without 30% of major, major contributors on both sides of the ball. Not making excuses, but we are so, so thin! Need to get healthy badly for the bowl. Thankfully (never thought I would say this), Crowder should be healthy and back. Croom and Hurd will be healthy hopefully. Maybe we get lucky and AJ gets cleared, and he gets to play one final game with his team. We will look a lot different with those players. I'm still not convinced with our OC, but I'm trying to think how thin, young, and limited we were at WR and RB tonight. Let's enjoy going bowling for a change and GO VOLS!
