Recruiting Rankings Matter

How many of our said bluechip players played this year? More specifically, in the secondary and LOS? Because that’s where we got torched the worst

lol focus in. Don’t move the goal posts. Let’s first acknowledge that your complaint about the blue chip ratio is complete trash given CJH has been moving further towards that threshold every year.

So what’re you crying about? Did you expect him to be able to change that overnight?

recruiting is fluid.

we really need to fill some holes on offense. hope we can.

Good for 8th in the conference.
Stone cold truth. If we had a staff that could do more with less or this Heupel offense was as unstoppable as everyone seemed to think early on, I'd be okay with it, but it's clear that's fools gold. We need a major advancement in our recruiiting AND at least 2 new coaches. Elarbee and Pope gotta go.

We have to get better players out of the portal. If money is an issue, make it not. WR talent is an issue, where is the help?

florida now has three 5 star WR, and several 4 stars. SC is getting much better, as is Allbarn.

These arent good teams, we just played in playoff. We won an Orange bowl in '22. Every time a player visits, we hear how we're the standard bearer, bet visit ever.

At some point you have to self reflect. Be honest and say 'are we really getting better?'

They do matter. Player development matters too. We seem to be behind in that also. Not one of Heupel's Olinemen he's recruited has started a game. We're heading into year 5..Other teams seem to get their players on the field earlier and they don't look lost.. We're starting to see the holes here. It's up to Heupel to plug them.

Been saying it for years but plenty have bashed me on here. But just look at just our conference UGA, LSU, Bama, TX, TAMU. Then factor teams like Oregon and OSU. This is a serious question. How can we realistically get into the top 5? I am being serious. How?
Money. Vols want to sit at the table then pony up and quit telling everyone how good our NIL is and show us.. We're not going to make much noise in the portal, it closes in few days.. Most of our rivals and teams we play have snapped up most of the good players. We get to shift through the crumbs..

I mean, it just takes time. You don’t just walk into the playoffs, go into a blue blood’s house and win with a really good, but not great roster. 2022 was the first year we were even respectable in a long, long time and Ohio State has been in this elite position for a long, long time. Honestly, they’ve rarely skipped a beat since like…..the mid-1990’s. Since 1993 and excluding the COVID year, you know how many seasons they failed to win double digit games? Answer: 6. 6 seasons out of the last 31. Mind-boggling to think about tbh. Was it against lesser competition? Maybe. But find me another program in America that has the same level of consistency. Not many out there.

But haven’t you heard, we finished 3rd in the SEC and made the playoffs!!

We are getting it done!!
We ain’t worried about no #’s on a paper

☹️ we didn’t go undefeated and average 50 ppg and finish top 3 in recruiting like we do on my video game ☹️

Did you lose some of your e-cred on another message board with opposing teams recently? You must be devastated.

The greatest recruiting clsss of all-time was the 1999 Miami class. It featured Ken Dorsey, Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, Bryant McKinnie, Vernon Carey and Phillip Buchanon, among other studs.

It was ranked 10th in the nation that cycle.

Rankings aren’t science.
Much more research is done now.

I don’t believe your analysis is even debatable anymore. Too much proof what you’re saying is correct.

Nobody is denying that maintaining top 5 classes improves the probability of success and numbers can show that historically, BUT putting the best talent on the field, regardless of the mix of star ratings is the real key. Statistically for example 80% of top 5 recruiting teams don’t win the championship each year. Math is funny like that.

The study now will have to include retention success.

Staff evaluation value and development skills need to be studied to see how many non blue chip players get drafted and how many blue chip guys don’t. That is the end all of rankings.

Top 10 is where we recruit. It’s really good. However, to truly compete for a championship you have to recruit top 5 if not top 3.

Your ratio of 4/5 stars has to be significantly higher than the 3 stars on your roster.
When you compare our 4-5 star ration to OSU, one will understand why we were run out of the stadium.. 15 5 stars to 1. That is significant. We did beat teams this year which had more talent than we did. Couldn't pull that off against OSU.

No ____ Sherlock. No one said top five recruiting was the only factor In being a NC team.

Exactly- I posted this in the portal thread I made a while back.

We are a top 10 recruiting coaching staff.. a top 15-20 development staff (at least from what we have to compare to for now)… so what’s the answer to compete for a championship ?

We have to do one of 2 things - change some coordinators to elevate either recruiting or development.. or become a team that is aggressive in the portal (not ole Miss or Auburn style is needed or wanted).

We can’t just recruit and develop as is AND be conservative in the portal unless we are just ok as a program for being the above average but never elite type.

This is all very true. But we’re not going to make the move into top 5 range. We settle for the Brazzells of the world.
Brazzel was a top tier get.. 700+ yards as a freshman at a mid level school- that’s on par with any elite freshman in the nation not named Smith or Williams.. I still think he can be really good

Smith lacks their explosiveness. He's more of a physical possession receiver with some deep speed like Larry Fitzgerald. Ryan Williams reminds me of a shorter Randy Moss while Wingo reminds me of Sterling Sharpe. Both have an extra juice in their legs Jeremiah Smith simply doesn't have.

With that said there is no shame in being another Larry Fitzgerald. That's a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Dude yet again you have no clue. Smith is gonna enter next year as the best WR in the nation. Williams is good. But he isn’t in Smiths league. He is not a shorter Moss. Not even close.

I have asked this before. How do we realistically get into the top 5? Think about the teams just in the SEC that out recruit us nearly every year: Bama, UGA, LSU, AU, TX. It seems Napier is catching recruiting fire at UF. That’s 6. Now throw in OSU, Oregon, Michigan, Clemson, PSU and possibly Miami.

None of those teams are going anywhere. So how can we honestly expect to recruit on their level?

I have no objection if you think Smith will be the better college receiver next year. I'm projecting who will be better when it's all said and done. I like Ryan Williams long term because of the superior explosiveness. He reminds me of a shorter Randy Moss. If you disagree then cool. I'm not trying to convince you to adopt my view. I was simply sharing my opinion. I know people are prisoners of the moment. And right now it's Smith's moment cause he's still playing and Williams isn't. But don't act like after the Georgia/Alabama game Ryan Williams wasn't everyone's favorite college WR.

We've got a decade plus to argue over these two. I'm simply planting my flag clearly on the side of Ryan Williams. I think he'll be the better receiver when it's all said and done.

I think Michigan last year was the first team in the last ~15 that didn’t have a top 5 class on campus when they won a title. Need to step up a level.

If George had stayed where he was ranked originally and we kept Utu and Shaedy, we would’ve been close this year.

But needs to get better.
