Each player on the team should do this.....I make my players do it...and it works.

List in order the 5 most impotant things in your life.
If you are an athlete, and your sport is in the top 4....you have problems. In some order...it should be family, health, education, faith(whatever that may be), or happiness.

Your sport should not be in that list. If the other things in your life are taken care of......how much easier is it to play your sport??!!

You also have the whole "he didn't actually succeed in hurting him" argument you made in that instance. Applies here, too. Looks like they have a pretty ironclad defense.

Ahh, but Spikes didn't get arrested for a felony. Therein lies the difference.

Could someone please post a link to this article? I'd like to read it.

From my experience as a fan and a wanna-be coach, the amount of professing Christians on the team really doesn't equal wins and titles as God doesn't work that way, but I will say that having respected professing Christian leaders on your team provides leadership in the locker room/clubhouse that is condusive to a atomphere that promotes winning (not a winning atmosphere itself).

Just my two cents.

Boy do I hope we have Chris Walker around for another season... after reading the article on the FCA meeting involving Mike Edwards and Janzen Jackson it made me a lot more comfortable with the future of the program even after the debacle of the previous two weeks.

I just found it so amusing when everyone and their brother was convinced that Bryce Brown was going to be trouble and lucky to last 2 seasons on the football team. This kid is one of the most religious people you would ever meet, and a great influence on his teammates.

I'm not trying to pull everyone back into a Fulmer vs. Kiffin debate, but it feels like we've got rid of most of the cancer that was eating our program from the inside over the last decade and have established real leadership and discipline. Believe me when I say this will eventually give us the extra credibility we need when we're trying to recruit future players mothers.

The future is strong with guys like Anthony Anderson, and Bryce Brown... and I'm more excited than ever for the future of the program.

:rolleyes

I always find the notion of attributing somebody's character to their profession of faith interesting.

In the past week, I have been flipped off by no less than 3 cars with fish symbols and religious bumper stickers. Last week I saw a preacher at a baptist church in my neighborhood pull up in the church parking lot in a Lexus and proceed to call the police to remove 2 homeless people who were sitting on the steps of the church.

Of course I am not going to generalize based on these observations, but rarely does profession of faith correlate in any way with strength of character. Anyone can argue all they want, but in my long life I have never ceased to be amazed at how uncaring and self-preserving many (not all) people that openly profess faith really are (and universally any faith not just christian).

To expand on what somebody posted earlier, A good person is a good person, no matter what they believe. Conversely, an A**hole is an A**hole no matter what they say.

I would argue that someone who practices a christian faith would try their best at everything they do knowing that it is to God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). That can lead to winning. That does not mean that God is going to directly influence the outcomes of the game but it does mean that God can help people do their best at whatever they put their hand to. Mark Richt may not be winning a lot of games this year but he may be doing the best he can with the gifts God gave him which is all you can ask for.

CLK preaches (and there's no better word for it) personal responsibility and players dedicating themselves to be excellent both on and off the field. There does not have to be christian faith for someone to do these things but they are christian principles.

I find it interesting that there has been so much religous talk with the team this year b/c the only coach that I've heard say anything about religion is Gran. The others may be christians but they don't really talk about it.

While I agree these young men are of good character and great to have on our team, being religion has nothing to do with that. They would be good kids if they believed in a flying spaghetti monster.

As 1world1love said, Christians can miserable ****s just as atheists can be good, caring morally strong people. The most religious person I ever knew stole my rent money and wasted it on drugs, but he still taught Sunday school.

Were the drugs good, wholesome drugs?

The point is simple......NO GOD or religion......................

If you...as an athlete...have your stuff in line.......you WILL play better. Faith is a small part of that. Faith may not be God...could be Allah(sp), Buddah, Zeus, Devil, ect.......I don't care...but some faith is important in anyones life. Your faith should be more important than the sport you play! So should education, family, health, ............

If they KNEW the same God I KNOW then you wouldn't be arguing.

With that said, there is nothing that change the mind of believers. So when I read opinions that say faith plays no role in how athletes perform, I can't help but feel sorry for their ignorance. Because to those said athletes faith is what allows them to play. Because without their faith they may not be alive, or may be in jail, or maybe just couldn't have ever been able to reach their full potential! God has allowed them the opportunity and gave them the strength to continue despite whatever set-backs they may have endured.
That is all, thanks.

For the record, I was raised Catholic... and am could be considered just a deistic leaning agnostic at this point... This wasn't a Praise Jesus! message, just that people need help sometimes and it's nice to see their teammates including some of the very good ones taking an interest in their them. Some will find comfort and some discipline in their lives, and that is a good thing no matter what you believe.

There are different roads to becoming a good individual, and not all of them require religion... but for some people it does. And a lot of these kids come from a semi religious background already, so they might relate to it despite previous cynicism if they see role models being... well, role models.

I used to be pretty cynical about religion, but I guess I got over that at some point.

Nuke was told by his aunts what to do to help him get through tough times, and I quote from Nuke....
"I always lean on my aunts. My aunts are my everything. They've helped me through a lot of situations and they've always been there for me. They know the best thing for me. I love my aunts to death," Richardson said.

"They basically told me to keep my faith, read your bible, things like that and to stay humble."
So basically, he didn't listen.

Seriously?

I've pursued many athletic endeavors and stayed out of trouble throughout my life, and I have zero faith in a higher power.

I thought there was a set plan of some sort.
