I really enjoyed Coat of Many Colors last year!

NBC orders Dolly Parton Christmas Special Sequel

Signaling another possible duet by NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt and Dolly Parton at Monday’s Upfront presentation, NBC today announced Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, a sequel to last year’s Parton-inspired holiday special.

The original cast from last year’s Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors will return for the sequel: Jennifer Nettles as Avie Lee Parton, Ricky Schroder as Robert Lee Parton, Gerald McRaney as Rev. Jake Owens and Alyvia Alyn Lind as young Dolly. Stephen Herek, who directed the original film, which was seen by nearly 16M viewers, also is back to direct the sequel. Other members of the cast, as well as a premiere date, will be announced later, NBC said.

In the sequel, an unexpected blizzard threatens the Parton family, while at the same time Dolly’s father — and his kids — make sacrifices to raise enough money to finally buy his wife the wedding ring he could never afford to give her. Meanwhile, an important person in little Dolly’s life begins to see that her amazing voice and musical gift might just be made for something bigger than rural Tennessee.

“It’s no secret that everyone loves Dolly Parton, and the response to our first movie was overwhelming — both in terms of the size of the audience and outpouring of love for a film with family values and faith,” Greenblatt said in today’s announcement. “So it felt like a no-brainer to bring this talented cast back together and tell another compelling holiday story culled from Dolly’s own life growing up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Her spirit and belief in God — and her music — will infuse this movie with the true spirit of Dolly Parton.”

At NBC’s upfront presentation last year, the official unveiling of the deal to adapt some of Dolly Parton’s better-known songs was one of the highlights. Greenblatt took to the piano at Radio City Music Hall to accompany Parton singing “I Will Always Love You,“ which became one of Upfront Week’s most talked-about moments. Parton explained she sometimes has dinner at Greenblatt ‘s house in Beverly Hills, which she describes as “the prettiest house you’ve ever seen,” and that, after dinner, she sings and he accompanies her on his big piano. “Of course we’re usually drinking,” Parton noted. She also made sure the media buyers knew “I Will Always Love You” is her song, not Whitney Houston’s. “She can have the credit; I just want the cash,” Parton quipped. It earned her a standing ovation, to which she responded by shouting to the crowd, “Get that money out!”

In today’s announcement, however, Parton said, “I was so overwhelmed and touched by how many people watched Coat of Many Colors and their reaction to it,” saying the title song “has always been my favorite.” She added, “I hope viewers will fall in love all over again.”

In L+7 results from Nielsen Media Research, the December 10 telecast of Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors generated a 2.45 rating in adults 18-49, and 15.9 million viewers overall, making it the most-watched film on broadcast or cable in nearly seven years. The film’s increase from Live+Same Day viewing marked the largest time-shift bump for a primetime movie on a broadcast network.

Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love is written by Pamela K. Long, who also exec produces along with Sam Haskell and Parton. The film is a production of Magnolia Hill Entertainment and Dixie Pixie Productions in association with Warner Bros Television.

Yeah, not only are the movie makers running out of ideas with all the remakes, but TV is too?

I don't get it either. Is it going to be a mini-series? I don't see how they could stretch these into more than one season.

Since I see who is starring in it I'll give Powerless a try!

DC Comics’ ‘Powerless’ & ‘Trial & Error’ Comedies Picked Up To Series By NBC

NBC has kicked off the pickups of pilots to series with a nod to DC Comics-themed comedy Powerless and Trial & Error, both from Warner Bros. TV. Powerless had an early pickup deadline, with the network supposed to make a decision by end of day today.

Both single-camera comedies have been early favorites at NBC, which landed the pitches with big commitments last summer and has been high on both pilots since their early stages. Written by Ben Queen, the workplace comedy Powerless features (mostly fringe) DC Comics superheroes and stars Vanessa Hudgens. The pickup gives DC a half-hour comedy series to go with the company’s superhero drama series Gotham on Fox, Supergirl on CBS and Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on the CW.

Trial & Error, written by Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller, is a comedic take on the hot genre of murder trail documentaries like Making a Murderer. Nick D’Agosto stars and John Lithgow star.

Powerless and Trial & Error join Mike Schur’s straight-to-series NBC comedy The Good Place starring Kristen and Ted Danson, from Universal TV. The network is yet to give series orders to comedy pilots from its sister studio, with the multi-camera Marlon and single-camera Tracy Wigfield high on the list of hopefuls. On the drama side, the network has straight-to-series orders to a Taken prequel and the Oz-themed Emerald City.

Here are descriptions of NBC’s newly picked up comedy series:

POWERLESS (single camera)
STUDIO: Warner Bros TV
TEAM: Ben Queen (w, ep), Michael Patrick Jann (d, ep)
LOGLINE: In the first comedy series set in the universe of DC Comics, Vanessa Hudgens plays Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. It’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult “hero” in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.
CAST: Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk, Christina Kirk

TRIAL & ERROR (aka The Trail; single camera)
STUDIO: Barge Productions & Good Session Productions in association with Warner Bros TV
TEAM: Jeff Astrof (w, ep), Matt Miller (w, ep), Jeffrey Blitz (d)
LOGLINE: In this outrageous fish-out-of-water comedy, bright-eyed New York lawyer Josh Segal Trial & Error - Season Pilotheads to a tiny Southern town for his first big case. His mission? To defend an eccentric, “rollercizing” poetry professor (John Lithgow) accused of the bizarre murder of his beloved wife. Settling into his makeshift office behind a taxidermy shop and meeting his quirky team of local misfits, Josh suspects that winning his first big case will not be easy, especially when his client is always making himself look guilty. “Making a Murderer” can be funny!
CAST: Nick D’Agosto, Steven Boyer, John Lithgow, Sherri Shepherd, Jayma Mays, Krysta Rodriguez

New CW Pickups!!

Supergirl Moves To The CW, Renewed For Season 2

The CW has picked up its first new series for next season, and it is not that new. After weeks of speculation, Supergirl will move from CBS to sister network the CW, which has renewed the superhero drama for a second season. The pickup, which comes hours after the most recent deadline for CBS to make a renewal decision on the freshman series, expands the CW DC superhero universe to four series, all from producer Greg Berlanti, as Supergirl is set to join The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. One of them, Flash, already crossed over to Supergirl on CBS, making for a seamless integration of the newbie into the CW superhero squad.

‘Riverdale’, ‘Frequency’ & ‘No Tomorrow’ Picked Up To Series By The CW

It is probably time to change the CW moniker to GB for Greg Berlanti who will have five series on the network next season. The CW has given a series order to the Berlanti-produced Riverdale, which will join his superhero quartet of The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, newly relocated to the CW from CBS for next season. Riverdale is one of three pilots picked up to series by the CW, along with Frequency and No Tomorrow.

Riverdale is one of three pilots picked up to series by the CW, along with Frequency and No Tomorrow.

I hear it came down to the wire for the third slot, with Frequency and Kevin Williamson’s paranormal drama in contention, both from WBTV. Frequency, based on the New Line movie, is more lucrative for the studio as the project, like Riverdale, is based on company-owned IP and will remain solely owned, not become a co-production with CBS TV Studios. This marks the second series pickup for Lin Pictures, which also has the Lethal Weapon remake at Fox.

Here are details about the CW’s newly picked up series:

They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the ‘butterfly effect’ wreak havoc in the present day.
Executive Producer / Writer: Jeremy Carver (“Supernatural”)

KJ returning to TV!

Kevin James Comedy ‘Kevin Can Wait’ Picked Up To Series By CBS

CBS has kicked off the pickups of new series by formalizing the series order to Kevin Can Wait (formerly Untitled Kevin James). The multi-camera sitcom, which already had a series commitment/straight-to-series order, brings back Kevin James to CBS where he became a star on the network’s sitcom The King Of Queens. The new series, which is said to share a lot of DNA with King Of Queens, hails from the same studios, Sony TV and CBS TV Studios.

It stars James as a newly retired police officer looking forward to spending carefree, quality time with his wife and three kids, only to discover he faces tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets. James executive produces with showrunner Bruce Helford, Rock Reuben, Jeff Sussman and Andy Fickman. James, Helford and Reuben wrote the script.

Co-starring alongside James are Erinn Hayes, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James Digiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Leonard Earl Howze, Lenny Venito and Gary Valentine.

Kevin Can Wait is one of two sitcom starring vehicles that have been a high priority for CBS this season, along with the Matt LaBlanc pilot from CBS TV Studios. CBS Corp. chairman Les Moonves personally monitored the table reads/tapings for the projects, which both have big stars and big commitments.

Another "Chicago" series at NBC!

Chicago Justice picked up to series at NBC!

Dick Wolf’s Chicago procedural franchise is expanding to four series. The legal offshoot Chicago Justice, whose characters were introduced on the Chicago PD episode last night, has been picked up to series by NBC, the first new drama series order at the network this season, besides the straight-to-series Taken and Emerald City.

Chicago Justice, toplined by Philip Winchester, revolves around Chicago State’s Attorney’s team of prosecutors and investigators as they navigate heated city politics and controversy head-on while fearlessly pursuing justice. It joins the mothership Chicago Fire and fellow spinoffs Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.

The planted spinoff episode of Chicago P.D. last night won the 10 PM hour with a 1.4 rating in 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers (Live+same day), up a tick in the demo from last week.

Chicago Justice stars Winchester, Carl Weathers, Nazneen Contractor, Joelle Carter and Ryan-James Hatanaka. Wolf, Peter Jankowski, Matt Olmstead, Derek Haas, Michael Brandt and Arthur ‎Forney executive produce for Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment.

Chicago Justice joins NBC comedy pilots Trial & Error and Powerless, which also have been picked up to series.

This looks interesting but I still have a bad taste from how ABC canceled Forever!

‘Time After Time’ Picked Up To Series By ABC

Jumping on the time-travel craze this season, ABC has picked up Kevin Williamson’s time travel drama Time After Time to series.

Based on the novel by Karl Alexander and movie, Time After Time delivers a fantastical cat and mouse adventure through time when famed science fiction writer H.G. Wells is transported to modern day Manhattan in pursuit of Jack the Ripper. Once H.G. arrives in New York City, he finds a world he never thought possible and a young woman who captivates him. Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) is exec producer and writer.

The series stars Freddie Stroma as H.G. Wells, Revenge alum Josh Bowman as John Stevenson/Jack the Ripper, Genesis Rodriguez as Jane and Regina Taylor as Vanessa Anders. Time After Time is from Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television Williamson and Marcos Siega are executive producers. Siega directed the pilot. Williamson wrote the teleplay.

CBS has picked up ‘Training Day’, ‘Bull’, ‘MacGyver’, ‘The Great Indoors’, Matt LeBlanc Comedy & Jason Katims Drama

CBS has given series orders to dramas Training Day, a sequel to the movie; the Dr. Phil-inspired Bull, starring NCIS‘ Michael Weatherly, Jason Katims’ Pure Genius (fka Bunker Hill) and MacGyver, a reboot of the classic series. On the comedy side, the network has picked up the Matt LeBlanc starrer, now titled Man with a Plan and workplace half-hour The Great Indoors starring Joel McHale. Both are multi-camera as is the newly picked up Kevin James comedy Kevin Can Wait, meaning that renewed Life In Pieces will be the only single-camera comedy series on CBS next season.

Rumor is that CBS may not be done with pickups, and there could be a possible nod to one of Joan Rater and Tony Phelan’s early favorites Doubt or Drew.

I hear MacGyver will undergo some retooling with all actors except star Lucas Till and co-star George Eads recast. The project faced numerous challenges, including writer and director changes. (the final pilot script was written by Paul Downs Colaizzo and Brett Mahoney, with David Von Ancken stepping in for James Wan to direct). Still, CBS brass continued to like the title, leading to the pickup, possibly for midseason.

Michael Weatherly will make a seamless transition, hanging up his NCIS badge in the finale next Tuesday night before attending the CBS upfront presentation as the star of Bull — playing a character inspired by Dr. Phil — a few hours later.

Training Day, from Warner Bros. TV, is the only new CBS series not owned or co-owned by the network. WBTV has been on a roll with its movie titles this season, landing series pickups for all — Training Day, Lethal Weapon at Fox and Frequency at the CW. Its current CBS series Rush Hour is not likely to come back.

Medical drama Pure Genius, from Universal TV and CBS TV Studios, emerged as a favorite after strong testing, with the network’s freshman medical drama Code Black also looking hopeful for renewal.

Like the Kevin James comedy, the Matt LeBlanc sitcom, written on spec by Jeff & Jackie Filgo, was fronted by a big star and backed by a big penalty, making it a favorite. Its table read was attended by CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves.

Outside of the James and LeBlanc projects, The Great Indoors was the multi-camera pilot garnering the strongest buzz the last few weeks.

My pick to be cancelled the quickest goes to.....

NBC has added another drama to its lineup for 2016-17: “Midnight, Texas,” a supernatural-tinged show based on novels by “True Blood” author Charlaine Harris.

The show is about a small town in Texas where the real world bumps up against a host of otherworldly phenomena. The cast includes Arielle Kebbel, Peter Mensah, Jason Lewis, Shannon Lorance and Francois Arnaud.

Monica Owuso-Breen (“Agents of SHIELD,” “Fringe”) adapted Harris’ book series and is executive producing.

“Midnight, Texas” joins a crop of seven other new shows — four dramas and three comedies — on NBC’s 2016-17 schedule.

This sounds interesting but again its NBC!

‘Timeless’ Time Travel Drama From Eric Kripke & Shawn Ryan Gets NBC Order

Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan’s time-travel extravaganza Timeless, which had emerged as one of the strongest drama pilots at NBC, has landed a series order at the network. It completes a sweep of the time-travel broadcast pilots this season, with all 3 going to series, including drama Time After Time at ABC and comedy Making History at Fox.

Timeless, directed by Neil Marshall, was entangled in tense negotiations between producing studio Sony TV and NBC, which, like ABC, insists on in-season stacking rights for all new series. The studio also has The Blacklist spinoff, whose pickup is pending, as well as Cruel Intentions, Timeless - Season Pilot which also had been in contention.

NBC is loading up on genre-themed dramas for next season, with two out of the four new hourlong series picked up so far, including Timeless and the supernatural Midnight, Texas. The other two are ensemble dramedy This Is Us and the Chicago Justice legal procedural, a spinoff from the Chicago franchise.

Timeless, starring Matt Lanter, Abigail Spencer and Malcolm Barrett, gives David Entertainment a third broadcast series for next season, along with the renewed The Blacklist at NBC and Dr. Ken at ABC. The company also has The Blacklist spinoff in contention. Here are details about the new NBC series:

I don't think I have seen more than first 4 or 5 episodes of the season.

NBC has picked up The Blacklist spinoff now titled The Blacklist: Redemption to series.

In The Blacklist: Redemption, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) joins forces with Susan “Scottie” Hargrave (Janssen), the brilliant and cunning chief of GThe Blacklist: Redemption - Season Pilotrey Matters, a covert mercenary organization that solves problems governments don’t dare touch. Their relationship resembles that between Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) and Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) on the mothership series.

In addition to Janssen and Eggold, the cast of the spinoff series includes Edi Gathegi and Tawny Cypress. The planted spinoff episode was written by The Blacklist creator/executive producer Jon Bokenkamp and exec producer/showrunner John Eisendrath and was directed by Michael Dinner.
