Honestly, Paul would be my 2nd choice. But his personality is so polarizing, he could never be elected.
And Romney, Santorum and Gingrich aren't polarizing? Check the numbers... Romney has about 2/3 of the GOP that can't bring themselves to embrace him. The numbers are about the same for the rest. There is no candidate in the GOP field or in the on deck circle outside of maybe Chris Christie (maybe) that wouldn't get over a 50% approval rating from the GOP base right now.
Most people will be voting against Obama and not for Romney in November. it's not like people are jumping out of their seats just itching to plant Romney yard signs.
Actually, Romney has about a 60% approval rating from the GOP. He is the most commonly listed second choice.
I'm not saying he's hugely popular but the whole 2/3rd don't like him just isn't accurate. When there are six choices if they were equally popular each candidate would have about 17% support - Romney is at double that.
Yes/no - say Gingrich is your first choice and Romney is your second, if Gingrich drops out then you would vote for Romney as you choice that's left. Basically this happens every election for both parties. I think plenty of Obama voters preferred Hillary but still considered Obama to be a good second choice.

Mitt Romney has no credible plan to cut government. Romney right now is running to the left of Barack Obama he's criticizing him for cutting medicare .he's criticizing Rick Perry for calling social security a "Ponzi scheme" and he's talking about drastically jacking up military spending. What are you gonna cut? - Matt Welch
